Ghosts US - is it as good?

DD(12) and I have just binged the UK series of Ghosts and we absolutely loved it. I mean really, really loved it.

We have just tried the first episode of the US version and did not find it that good. Is it worth persevering?

Or perhaps someone has any other recommendations for a series that I could watch with a 12 year old?

Thank you in advance.

It's nowhere near as good.
I wouldn't bother. We gave up after a couple of episodes.
The US version of the Office might be worth a try? It's not as acidic as the UK one.

OhBling · 07/01/2025 12:22

I have never heard of either of these... off to check them out! Grin

Brumchum · 07/01/2025 12:25

I enjoyed both.

twobluehorses · 07/01/2025 12:25

Its good. Its different too so you can happily watch both.

The original cast have had involvement with the US version. Matthew Baynton (Thomas) is in a couple of episodes

LIZS · 07/01/2025 12:26

Sadly not as good. It is also a bit more explicit. The first few episodes mirror uk series 1 but are a pale imitation then it gains its own momentum and improves.

FadedRed · 07/01/2025 12:29

Loved the UK Ghosts. Have you seen the YouTube compilation ‘tribute’ video, with ‘The Parting Glass’ background music?
The US Ghosts was watchable, but not nearly as good as the UK series, lacks the subtlety and the pathos of the original series.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/01/2025 12:30

It's worth persevering. They're not terrible.. The first 3-4 episodes follow the stories of the BBC Ghosts, but from then on they follow their own stories and improve a lot.

X post with @LIZS !

Consider it to be totally different programme along the same theme.
Its for American humour and the characters align to American stereotypes

eg in the UK we have a trouserless politician with a sex scandal backstory, and in the US they have a trouserless Wall Street stockbroker …. and without spoilers has a more of a frat boy aimed backstory

I watched them all and liked the US version, but it’s not as good as the original

Note that Germany and Australia also have versions coming in the future

And France

Lightswitchup · 07/01/2025 12:40

Enjoyed both. They are different whilst sharing the odd character/plot line. UK one is better but US one is good too

Pippapotamus · 07/01/2025 12:42

The premise is the same but other than that it's a very different type of humour. Its clearly written for an American audience so I think it depends on how you feel about that style of comedy. I didn't mind it, I like how the US Mike tries to interact with the Ghosts compared to our Mike and they have 2 really good character IMO- the native American ghost and the prohibition jazz singer who believes she was murdered and wants to prove it!

Waterlooville · 07/01/2025 12:42

I liked both. I would say worth persevering.

Iloveagoodnap · 07/01/2025 12:42

Ooo I'm excited about other countries bringing out their versions. It will be interesting to see some of their history in the types of ghosts they have.

I enjoyed the US version. It gets better as it goes I think.

TickingAlongNicely · 07/01/2025 12:43

The first episode was unwatchable. However when they had time to grow into their parts and it got its own life, its been good. The only problem is they explain everything. (It can feel a little school play like at times)

wholettheturnipsburn · 07/01/2025 12:49

I love our version but did quite like the American one, when I stopped comparing

The ghost that died of dysentery is the kind of childish humour that appeals to me

1984Winston · 07/01/2025 12:53

I agree you have to think of it as a different programme, I loved UK Ghosts so much and wasn't keen on the USA version at first but I'm glad I stuck with it now

Chanonrypoint · 07/01/2025 12:56

Yonderland by the same team behind UK Ghosts is very good. It was a bit overlooked at the time. It would be great to watch with your 12 year old.

OurFlagMeansAfternoonTea · 07/01/2025 13:22

I liked it, but not until I'd watched a few episodes. The series has a lot more episodes so it has to come up with more stories. I liked one where the Alison character (forgot her name) meets her dead mother.

I enjoyed the different characters. The US ghosts are able to have sex with each other!

icecreamscoops · 07/01/2025 13:25

We just couldn't get on with it!

Cheesymonster · 07/01/2025 14:42

Thank you everyone!

It's absoloutley awful. I stuck with it for basically the whole run as I felt I owed it. And hated every scene.

JimHalpertsWife · 07/01/2025 14:45

And I truly adore the UK version.

HoppingPavlova · 07/01/2025 14:59

Loved UK series. Suffered through 2 episodes of USA series and decided not to waste another minute of my life on it, just woeful. But then, I also detested USA The Office but loved UK one so maybe it’s a theme?

Cooroo · 26/01/2025 16:16

I loved the US series. They got really good humour out of it and the differences in the characters worked well.
