I just turned it on halfway through and realised I practically know it word for word and I haven’t seen it for a few years. I must’ve watched it from being a child and seen It numerous times. Goodness they were all so handsome. I only saw Janes Caan in Elf the other day😀 I will stay up and watch the end. He’s just got married 😞

Al Pacino was gorgeous . As was Diane Keaton . Loved the way this looks . The violence coexisting with the normality of life is what makes it so fascinating.

EachandEveryone · 29/12/2024 07:10

I always wanted them to be together in real life. I think they were for abit (until Woody came along 😀)

DH most favourite film ever, I can’t imagine the number of times he has watched it.

AuntieMarys · 29/12/2024 07:48

At least 10 times. In fact we are watching it NYE.
Robert Duvall is one of my favourite actors

AuntieMarys · 29/12/2024 07:49

Didn't realise part 2 on NYE....although part 3 is dreadful

ripple73 · 29/12/2024 08:21

DS1 was very much put out when I said Godfather was my favourite movie. Obviously now that I'm middle aged and decrepit he was expecting it would be something like the Railway Children

purplespink · 29/12/2024 09:10

I prefer 1 to 2, I think that Marlon Brando is THE Godfather, followed by Pachino. I have seen the first one 5 times, watched all 3 4 times. 3 is nowhere near as good but at least they finished the story rather than left it open. It's hard when you compare a sequel to a masterpiece, it'll never be as good.

StoorieHoose · 29/12/2024 09:14

Love 1 and 2 and have watched lots of times. 3 went to the cinema to see it and have never watched it since

awaynboilyurheid · 29/12/2024 09:47

It’s a masterpiece of a film, the storyline and acting are first class.
I watched it again recently on a long flight and thoroughly enjoyed it. Just love how Al Pacino’s character develops from the beginning to the end and the betrayal scene in the hospital is still gripping after all this time. Great film .

snakeface · 29/12/2024 10:12

Have it recorded (in case not on catch up) for a cold windy afternoon, maybe today....
Have always wanted to watch it. Have caught glimpses throughout my life but was never available when I seriously sought it out before. So very excited to watch and will deffo record Part 2

allmybooksarefromthelibrary · 29/12/2024 10:20

Many, many times. I saw it at the cinema for the 50th Anniversary as well.

It is up there for one of my favourite films - so gripping and beautifully shot.

Tooty78 · 29/12/2024 10:24

This was my Dad's favourite film, and I sat and watched it with him many times. Recently re watched it and I'd forgotten a brilliant a film it is.
On aside as an 18 year old I spent a summer working in Italy as an an pair. The family I worked for had a villa on the island of Elba, and I remember reading the Godfather book, and the heat, the sounds of the crickets and smell of the olive trees was so evocative I felt I was in Sicily!

EachandEveryone · 29/12/2024 10:26

I’ve just read that Jack Nicholson turned down the part of Michael as he felt it should go to an Italian actor. It would’ve been so different.

Many, many times. The Godfather and The Godfather Part II are my favourite films. I think of them as one work of art, like a 2-volume book. I have them on DVD and watch that every so often.

A couple of years ago I saw Coppola's reworked version of Part III. It was better than when I first saw it, but still not a patch on the first two. Really suffered from not having Robert Duvall.

Yes, it's violent. It's a film about organised crime, of course it's going to be violent. It's also a film about what that does to the perpetrators. Not all films have to be harmless fluff.

No idea but we are watching it again and discussing whether Michael really loved Apollonia (he did)

That bit was so sad....

Find it mesmerising ever single time. Read the book before I saw the film and have re-read it several times since. Love watching Pacino's evolution into the Don from the scene outside the hospital onwards. Cringe at Fredo's subservient behaviour, he's so out of his depth with the lethal people he's trying to suck up to. And Pacino all the way, stunning man to watch.

Agree
Great film/s.

He is so good.

RabbitsRock · 29/12/2024 11:46

I don’t think I’ve seen it all the way through.

Eyesopenwideawake · 29/12/2024 11:47

Fabulous film, seen both parts countless times (the only part I tend to skip is De Nero's young Vito). It's very close to the book, didn't Puzo write the script?

DaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisy · 29/12/2024 12:26

Sunday Monday Thursday Tuesday Wednesday Saturday...... poor Apollonia

YourWinter · 29/12/2024 12:27

Never. I’ve see Goodfellas twice though.

Edited

Goodfellas is brilliant! Waaaaaaaaaay better than the tedious and dreary Godfather.

Yes, with Coppola, who was already a very accomplished screenwriter (had just won the Screenwriting Oscar for Patton). I didn't think much of the book, but I read it after I'd seen the film several times, which probably didn't help. The music is so wonderful.

She would have been the perfect Mafia wife.

She'd have happily produced lots of fine sons for Michael, dished up the spaghetti and never have dreamed of interfering in 'family business'. She was brought up a good Sicilian girl after all.

I know it's a bit daft to speculate about the hypothetical fate of fictional characters, but had she lived and gone to America as Michael's wife, he would never have given Kay another thought again.
