The call the midwife christmas special is on bbc 1 in 2 parts. The first part will be shown on christmas day at 20:00. The second part will be shown at 19:30 on boxing day. Series 14 will start on 5th January. I am suprised that it has not been renamed as the doctor Turner show.

I'm hoping Lucile has found someone new in Jamaica and Cyril comes back accepting it. I liked her and them as a couple but think he's a stronger character with more potential for development. The way blonde midwife is depicted as clearly moping about him (and hugging the cat) makes me think he will.

I definitely think it is being set up for Cyril and new nurse to get it together but I won't buy it, it would be totally out of character for both Lucille and Cyril to divorce. Realistically when Lucille decided to stay away he should have returned Jamaica too. The best way to resolve the story if they didn't want to write Cyril out would be to recast Lucille.

APushbikeNamedReluctance · 22/01/2025 20:53

I think Lucile will die. Divorce just so unlikely, and Cyril willing having an affair too out of character. So Lucie dying and Cyril speedily getting over it the more likely option.

I'm not too fussed on the 70s but really hope they keep it going and show the (true story) of the nuns relocating in the 80s to nurse AIDS victims

Trixie's brother will ... OMG I should be a Call the Midwife scriptwriter....

He'll head off on an extended trip to NYC or San Francisco.
Only to return to the East End in 1981 ish. Within a few months, he starts to feel increasingly under the weather with strange black lesions appearing on his skin.

No one knows what's affliction him. The nuns take him in and nurse him at Nonnatus.

Then one day, Dr Turner spots a news snippet about cases of pneumonia in New York and San Francisco that only affect gay men.

BESTAUNTB · 22/01/2025 21:24

….and mansplains retroviruses to the midwives.

I was quite convinced the Turners would take on little June but glad in some ways it was shown more realistically.

They'd have had May and June then!!

InMySpareTime · 23/01/2025 14:41

They could add an April and an August, but that's it for month names.

Aintnobodygottime · 23/01/2025 14:42

January Jones?

InMySpareTime · 23/01/2025 14:51

Of all the months, January is the bleakest to make a name from.

I knew someone who had a DD called Autumn.

I've just watched the Spina Bifida episode from series 2. It was similar in many ways, but the mother eventually came round at the thought of losing him.

Which reminds me... have they mentioned St Gideons un the last few series?

nonumbersinthisname · 23/01/2025 17:22

Sorry just jumping in to join the Linda Bassett fan club. I saw her over 20 years ago on stage and thought then she was a brilliant actress and then she was in Calendar girls and it seems to me has been very successful as a character actor since then. I also love Phyllis and Millicent although I really wasn’t sure that someone without medical training would have been sent out to track sexual contacts for cases of VD.

I can remember Jake making another appearance in series 3. He was staying at the hone where Ruby considered placing her baby in series 2. I have forgotten the name of the home in question. I don't think that it has been mentioned in more recent episodes. I could be wrong as some of the recent episodes have sent me to sleep.

I suppose it could be appropriate for the time, but it seemed as if the parents of the baby with the meningocele were given almost no information.
"It looks as if your baby has something called spina bifida."
"I've heard of that, it's bad, we're not going to keep her."
And that was that, with no sign of any attempt to discuss the little girl's actual outlook before and after surgery or give details about the support that would have been offered to the parents. I'm quite cross about that. Everyone could have done better.

(I thought the Turners and the Buckles might end up fighting to adopt her.)

I agree, I think they tried to include too many storylines in this episode and left out the conversation that should have happened. Very poor.

LouisvilleSlugger · 19/01/2025 21:19

All rather predictable. Makes you so glad though for a. Folic acid and b. Ultrasound scans.

The pedant in me was irritated by the sign outside the Register office saying ‘Registry’ office. Very poor as would never happen.

I spotted that sign too. I’m also a pedant.

Exactly. I did think that it was better than other more recent episodes but there were too many stories. They have covered too many stories in other recent episodes too.

I know of quite a few Summer's. Many years ago, there was someone who worked at a customer called Summer Loving. I never spoke to her to know if that was the name her parents gave her, or a nickname.

I think that they should have recast her. I found it hard to believe that she would give up on her marriage. I thought that she had strong religious values. Sometimes i think she will die or Cyril won't come back. I do like Cyril.

Kohlsparasaurus- don’t think the Buckles would have adopted June at their time of life!

veraswaistcoat · 24/01/2025 17:32

Trying not to read too much of this. I have just gone back this windy day to watch current series after years of not watching . I saw the Immaculate Conception one. I always feel like crying the whole way through - combo of sad situations and women's lives in that time period. These years are well remembered by myself although albeit from the point of a young teenager . Sex and life were very scary then. There was no reassurance, no knowledge and no safe feelings in those times for me.

I dont think they would have been allowed to. My great aunt and uncle wanted to adopt a little girl they fostered and were not allowed to because of their age. Sadly she was returned to her mother who killed her. That was late 60s

TwinklyFawn · 24/01/2025 17:49

I have just looked on the bbc website. Apparently Cyril will be back in episode 5.

As someone said upthread, I don’t understand the hate for the Turners here. I love them, especially Dr Turner. I think he’s a lovely, compassionate character.

InMySpareTime · 24/01/2025 17:58

I don't hate the Turners, but they get shoehorned into too many storylines that should be centred on midwives and pre/post-natal women.
It's Call the Midwife, not Call the GP.
