The call the midwife christmas special is on bbc 1 in 2 parts. The first part will be shown on christmas day at 20:00. The second part will be shown at 19:30 on boxing day. Series 14 will start on 5th January. I am suprised that it has not been renamed as the doctor Turner show.

And the cantankerous old man was David Troughton, son of Patrick the first Doctor Who.

So grandfather of Dudley Dursley from Harry Potter?

spiderlight · 19/01/2025 22:46

Is it me or is Nurse Crane looking very thin suddenly? I hope the actress is OK.

That was a good episode. Poor little June. I kept expecting the parents to have a change of heart.

We said exactly the same thing... she looks quite thin / frail almost

I've just caught up with last week's episide, and can confidently say I'm never recovering from Dr Turner saying "Sometimes when you get lucky, you get unlucky." with a wry smile.

Nothing will be ok again ever.

You could be entitled to compensation…

FagsMagsandBags · 19/01/2025 23:38

Patrick Troughton was the second doctor who, the first was William Hartnell but I think it's easy to think it was Troughton because he made much more of a mark on the series.

I don't even know why I know this shit. I'm not some mad Doctor Who fan, I just know stupid shit.

You are absolutely right, I am ashamed of myself. I’ll head to the back shop and help myself to something from the wall of crisps as compensation.

BESTAUNTB · 19/01/2025 23:57

A pretty good episode! The best in a long while. I thought that the young couple were going to have a change of heart about June, but the writer went for the grittier option.

Far less twee than usual although old Alf suddenly deciding that he wasn’t racist after 70+ years on the planet was questionable.

Fred being out and about in the community works for me. The domestic stuff with Reggie bores me a little.

Sr Julienne having more than a couple of lines to say is always a good thing.

So Sr Veronica and Nancy have left?

We were just watching the 25th anniversary special of To The Manor Born, and Miss Higgins was in it!

Did anyone notice a couple of the guest actors tonight from previous dramas... the mother of the baby with spina bifida was Alexa Davies who was in 'Raised By Wolves' playing Caitlin Moran's character's sister (loved that show, so sorry it was axed) and was also in 'Detectorists' playing Toby Jones's daughter.

And the lady in the meeting about what to do with baby Jean was Lisa Coleman... sister of the late great Charlotte Coleman. I think she used to be a regular in Casualty as well many years ago. Anyway - recognised both instantly... both very good actors and good to see them on our screens again!

Lisa Coleman - remembered in our house as the actress who played Tracey Beakers foster mum.

Thanks for saying the spina bifida Mum was in The Detectorists.... I knew I recognised her from something else. 😊

The old chap (David Troughton) also plays Tony Archer in The Archers.

@icelolly99 - she was also Rosie in Mamma Mia 2

Yes, and his real life son Will plays his son Tom in The Archers. David was in a terrific series called A Very Peculiar Practice several decades ago.

CarefulN0w · 20/01/2025 07:38

I lived A Very Peculiar Practice!

Yes she is.
She is nearly 75 though.

If you remember all sorts of everything from your life it isn't 'stupid shit'. It adds to the wealth of knowledge. When I was a teenager I used to watch Strike's dad being Private(?) Mulvaney in India. Not many people know that, and it's not stupid shit.

So did i. I seem to remember something similar in series 2. The parents decided to keep the baby. I think they had some help from Jenny.

the poor abandoned baby so sad but realistic.

DefinitelyMaryBerry · 20/01/2025 10:33

That did feel like a more traditional episode. I thought opting for the ending they did with the baby was a good choice. They've done the "parents initially reject but then have a change of heart" route a few times now. I don't mind that we didn't see a lot of them trying to change the parents' minds. I think that would have mostly just been an avenue for patronising Dr Turner content. So I'll just assume more happened off screen.

Also think it's good they've had a bit of a focus on poverty so far too. You could assume because it's the 70s that they've really moved on from the poverty we saw back in the first series. I like the contrast with the exciting world of vending machines and coffee percolators and the still very real slums. Showing the divisions.

She did look very thin wearing her own clothes, especially her arms, but in her uniform she looked her usual self.? Filmed at different times?

RunAwayTurnAwayRunAwayTurnAway · 20/01/2025 13:58

How old is the character of Nurse Crane?
