The call the midwife christmas special is on bbc 1 in 2 parts. The first part will be shown on christmas day at 20:00. The second part will be shown at 19:30 on boxing day. Series 14 will start on 5th January. I am suprised that it has not been renamed as the doctor Turner show.

It's ok the music is perking up, all will be well.

Snowmenschilliballs · 05/01/2025 20:47

Has Dr Turner misdiagnosed appendicitis for pregnancy?

I was 5 in 1970 and I loved Yellow River by Christie
Was nice hearing a snippet of it early on in the show tonight.

Good call

FagsMagsandBags · 05/01/2025 20:51

Ah, it's Lenny the paperboy.

PrimalScreaming · 05/01/2025 20:52

Ah yes, one conversation and Roger's Mum has her Damascene moment!

Totally thought it was the dad - why did he say something about having had a vasectomy when he was talking to Cyril about his daughter?

Snowmenschilliballs · 05/01/2025 20:54

I want one of the Turner kids to go rogue and destroy Poplar. I think it will be May. She's the only one who can act.

The way he said it suggested he abused his daughter but it was ok he's had the snip.

MaloryJingleJones · 05/01/2025 20:56

GOD Dr Turner is so SMUG
Ugh
😡
I really want them girls to rebel as they grow, and hang out with punk rockers

Bananajam · 05/01/2025 20:56

Apparently the birth study (The 1970 British Cohort Study) i was enrolled in is discussed in tonight's episode. I've never watched it so didn't realise it was historically accurate? I'd be grateful if anyone could confirm it. Thanks!

Yes. They opened some folders just now with a sticker on mentioning the study.

Bananajam · 05/01/2025 20:58

Oh wow, I'll have to watch it now!

MaloryJingleJones · 05/01/2025 20:58

The preview loll

Dr Turner mansplaining again

Snowmenschilliballs · 05/01/2025 20:58

Same again next week ladies? 😁

Toddlerteaplease · 05/01/2025 21:00

@Snowmenschilliballs that's exactly what I thought.

PrimalScreaming · 05/01/2025 21:00

I had classmates enrolled in the survey - they were taken out of class or school, (can't remember which) for survey purposes every so often!

Oh I see. Grim.

PrimalScreaming · 05/01/2025 21:05

I'm still really befuddled by the fact my mum had a c-section in 1966 (after 3 miscarriages and also needed bed rest in hospital for months before the birth of my sister) then had me by vaginal birth with no mention of c-sections!?! No recommendations, no choice, no concern! Is CtM struggling for storylines and so embellishing the truth??

LIZS · 05/01/2025 21:05

Strong performance from the young actor as Paula, way better than the Woodentop Turners

KohlaParasaurus · 05/01/2025 21:08

Well, I have to admit that I quite enjoyed that, although I was hoping that little Paula would turn out to have an HCG-secreting tumour rather than being pregnant and Dr Turner would have egg on his face and the wrath of the church on his head. The whole "it was Lenny and I don't know what we did" thing was a lot less plausible than abuse by someone in the creepy church would have been.

My mother had a classical caesarean section with me (breech, failure to progress), and a late decision was made to let her have a trial of labour in hospital rather than a planned caesarean section with her next baby, around the time this episode of CtM was set. She still hasn't forgiven the obstetrician concerned.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/01/2025 21:08

I cannot imagine any consultant I. The 1970's admitting they were wrong to a GP. I can't really see it happening now!

FagsMagsandBags · 05/01/2025 21:17

I know that lots of people think this is pure shite and it is very melodramatic, over the top and more than a little silly at times but I still love watching it. It warms up my winter Sundays nicely.

FagsMagsandBags · 05/01/2025 21:19

The whole "it was Lenny and I don't know what we did" thing was a lot less plausible than abuse by someone in the creepy church would have been.

An elder would have been more dramatic, but a young lad, when she clearly hasn't the first idea about sex, what it is, what you do, etc, made sense to me. Less dramatic but perfectly believable that a little innocent wouldn't know what they'd done.

My mum had placenta praevia and a caesarean with my sister in 1970. She was cleaved vertically - a really drastic wound. I was then born naturally almost 3 years later.
