Haven't had a chance to watch this yet, loved it when I was a kid it was so magical and mysterious!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 09/12/2024 16:34

I have it on dvd. We watch it every year in the run-up to Christmas. I love it so much. We can all pretty much recite the whole thing Grin The special effects are adorably lame!

murasaki · 09/12/2024 16:40

I binge watched it yesterday. I was worried I'd think it looked shonky compared to my memories but it was charming and I loved it all over again.

murasaki · 09/12/2024 16:44

Also Abner Brown is still creepy. My sister was terrifed of him for ages (6 when she first watched it, I used to use him as a threat against her when we were small) , and now as a forty something mum of two with a good job, she apparently still is! So, I'll be bringing him up at Xmas lunch like the nice big sister I am.

suburburban · 09/12/2024 19:37

I started watching it, remember it was quite scary when I first watched it it

Really enjoying it

SpikyHatePotato · 09/12/2024 20:10

I watch it every Christmas, am debating whether to buy the 40th anniversary DVD which has a new 'Making Of' documentary as well.

The SFX are clunky to our eyes now, but 40 years ago they were absolutely cutting edge!

littleburn · 09/12/2024 21:01

As part of the 40th anniversary celebrations episodes 1-2 were on BBC4 last Saturday, along with a short 'making of' piece. Episodes 3-6 are on this Saturday. For those who want to maintain the 1984 vibe and not stream it 😁

menopausalmare · 09/12/2024 21:05

I watched the first two episodes yesterday. The incidental synth music is so wonderfully 1984☺️

Nourishinghandcream · 09/12/2024 21:11

I watch it every year on DVD.😁🎄

Remember when it was first shown and it made a segment on Blue Peter, pleased to find that the DVD box set includes that BP episode.
Also includes interviews and "the making of", tells the story of how they found the filming location to guarantee snow would be present.

Bought the audio CD a couple of years ago and was very disappointed, does not come across very well at all.☹️

Nourishinghandcream · 09/12/2024 21:18

The wonderful theme music is Hely Hutchinson Carol Symphony.
We listened to the album every Christmas when I was growing up (70's) so was doubly pleased when it was used as the theme music to BOD.

Me too! I have indoctrinated DH and the kids effectively too, we managed to quote from it most days (that's the time likings are made, time and tide and buttered eggs wait for no man, a co-inCIdence etc etc) and everyone agrees it wouldn't be Christmas without it!

We don't start it this early though, we tend to watch it over the final four or five days before Christmas.

Possets for all!

murasaki · 09/12/2024 21:40

DP never watched it as a kid, and just didn't get it. So I sent him off upstairs yesterday to watch whatever bollocks he was watching on Netflix and indulged myself with hot chocolate and cake. It was lovely.

We usually watch it over two days, the first being the day the tree goes up (around the 15th December). Last year I had trouble getting a decent tree that 'late' - isn't that the purple pim?!

murasaki · 09/12/2024 21:53

Apparently they did a stage show at Stratford that sis took her girls to, I really can't imagine how it could work so will ask at Xmas.

1975wasthebest · 09/12/2024 22:44

It’s lovely, enchanting viewing -I feel pretty old knowing I first saw it 40 years ago, when life was a lot more easier (as it usually is when you’re eight!).

It’s such a good yarn, I’ve always wondered why it was never remade.

I have the previous DVD version, but like a PO I am thinking of buying the blu ray that came out a couple of weeks ago. I see on Amazon a reviewer has said one of the new documentaries has interviews with the cast which were done this year.

Thank you! 😄

I genuinely hadn't seen it in 40 years. But had always remembered it. It was my dad who alerted me to it on the family WhatsApp, bless him.

Toddlerteaplease · 10/12/2024 08:26

My mum can't believe that I can't remember this being on TV. She recently brought the DVD. I pointed out that I was three when it came out. I saw it at the RSC last year and it was a good production, but I didn't think much of the story.

🤣🤣🤣 my sister had nightmares about Morgrim from the chronicles of Narnia. He was scary though

allmybooksarefromthelibrary · 10/12/2024 08:33

They did a lovely version at Wiltons Music Hall a few years ago.

I'm another annual watcher - I absolutely love it. The theme music (Hely-Hutchinson) sends shivers down my spine, although I think my favourite bit of the whole series is when they are rushing round getting the cathedral ready for Midnight Service.

I too may have bought the 40th Anniversary edition after having a very shonky video to DVD for years.

cuttinganotheronion · 10/12/2024 18:24

So happy I found this thread. Thought I was the only one who understood 'a purple pim' or Hurn the Hunter or was petrified of Abner Brown (who I later discovered was married to Maggie Smith)

Nordione1 · 10/12/2024 18:27

The human rat man eating cheese was the scariest thing ever.

SpeculatingRooks · 10/12/2024 18:47

I couldn't believe it when I saw that Nick Berry was one of the pirate rats!

SpeculatingRooks · 10/12/2024 18:49

On iPlayer it always says 'skip intro ' but no! The intro is one of the best bits, genuinely creepy!

RomanMum · 10/12/2024 18:57

@CaptainCarrotsBigSword "isn't that just the purple pim", a "hobsession" and "a warm posset" in a broad accent are regularly quoted in our house...
