Such a lovely slice of nostalgia. I now have major crush on Midge Ure - such a lovely creative and extremely calm man in the face of potential chaos.

Lovely to see the process and the genius of a young George Michael and Boy George bringing in the smut and humour.

Quo were absolutely still cool in 84. Maybe not among the hipper than thou crowd but, though it may be hard to remember they were still a very credible rock band before the many line-up changed and dodgy covers. They were picked to open Live Aid remember.

levantine · 05/12/2024 19:17

@Riapia, I'm really glad to hear that. I absolutely loved his Desert Island Discs, well worth a listen.

DH liked them and has never been cool...

Ona point of order they were picked to open because their song was Rockin All Over The World!

Yes and iirc he came across as a petulant prat on iacgmooh.

I actually disagree. I loved him after seeing that. I thought he was very restrained when faced with Matt Hancock. I'm not sure I would have been

Still cool? They were never cool! 😂

In The Army Now is a great tune to be fair.

If you were a rock fan they absolutely were. In the 70s they could pretty much do no wrong.

Yeah with the fag on his lips the whole time.

That's the one! Do you know who he is?

MargoLivebetter · 06/12/2024 11:20

@levantine agree about Tony Hadley. I was a similar age to you and it took me back to why we fancied them all so much. They were so glamourous and almost 'other worldly' back then. By today's standards they look a bit shabby, but back then they were like gods/ goddesses!

I still listen to modern pop music today. Have Radio 1 on in the car and enjoy going to see new artists and hear their music. BUT, nothing will ever come close to the excitement I used to feel watching TOTP and listening to the charts on a Sunday evening. My children don't understand it, as they can access any music they like whenever they like but there was something really special about it when it was a bit more rationed, for want of a better word.

Going weekly to the record shop to see what had come in. Buying an album and listening from start to finish. Such small joys.

Making compilation tapes for your friends/boyfriend that you listened to over and over again

Hmm, we'll have to agree to differ on who is classed as cool. What I saw was two Dad-rockers sniggering away like a superannuated Beavis and Butthead (and I don't care that they were only 30 odd or whatever). The coolest one there was probably Paul Weller. In my opinion of course 😆.

woffley · 06/12/2024 13:15

I adored watching this. Such a nostalgic trip and they all look so young.
At the time I was 25 and wasn't really into any of them, was more into rock. What stood out to me was how genuinely talented some of them were when at the time I thought them shallow one hit wonders.
I wasn't a fan of Boy George but wow, he really had a lovely voice. I never got the love for Spandau Ballet at the time and thought Tony Hadley a bit old but looking back he was gorgeous!
Quo were just always there. I saw them in 1973 on a school trip.
I was a big fan of Bob Geldof beecause Rat Trap was one of my all time favourite tracks. And Paula used to write a column in a magazine. There was a lot of dislike of Paula Yates on a MN thread once but I loved her.
I wasn't keen on Paul Weller but never did like that genre.

beguilingeyes · 06/12/2024 15:09

Paula Yates column in record Mirror was lovely.

I'm friends with Boy George and he says it was a fantastic experience....Francis Rossi was known as 'the pharmacist' with good reason

shortyshort · 06/12/2024 22:50

Loved it.

Why did Boy George say about Bob Geldof "give him a toadstool"??

Ahhh I absolutely love BG! Is he lovely in real life?

shortyshort · 07/12/2024 13:07

I'm sorry I can't look at boy George without thinking of when he kidnapped that bloke and tied him to a radiator.

He’s said on numerous occasions and within his book he deeply regrets it. Everyone makes mistakes in life.

LunaNorth · 07/12/2024 20:35

Everyone makes mistakes in life, true, but they don’t usually involve tying someone to a radiator and whipping them with a bike chain.

LilyRo · 08/12/2024 15:48

I loved this documentary as I'm really into 80s music, especially Duran Duran so it was great seeing the clips of John Taylor being interviewed with Gary Kemp.

I've seen a few interviews with some of the singers over the years and I don't think any of them realised that the recording was going to be filmed which is why they turned up looking so casual and scruffy!

There are also a couple of documentaries which were made for the 20th anniversary on YouTube which are worth a look.

Sinkintotheswamp · 13/12/2024 17:57

I think the babies are Sting &Trudi's and the Geldof babies.

unclemtty · 14/12/2024 07:57

@TheRebelHedgehog so if someone did that to you, or someone you cared about you'd be cool with that, cos we all make mistakes? Super chill.
