Such a lovely slice of nostalgia. I now have major crush on Midge Ure - such a lovely creative and extremely calm man in the face of potential chaos.

Lovely to see the process and the genius of a young George Michael and Boy George bringing in the smut and humour.

Exactly.

And I'll have nowt said against Paul Young ❤

Funkyslippers · 05/12/2024 14:25

Was lovely to see Simon Le Bon & Boy George's close friendship. I was always surprised that BG wasn't friends with GM. He said in a recent interview that their paths only crossed a couple of times over the years & their egos were too big

ApolloandDaphne · 05/12/2024 14:44

I watched it last night. It was great. I've seen Paul Young live and he was fab!

much fewer big female artists around at that time

Apart from

Kate Bush
Bonnie Tyler
Annie Lennox
Alison Moyet
Debbie Harry
Stevie Nicks
Cynic Lauper

And soul singers like
Tina Turner
Donna Summer
Dionne Warwick
Chaka Khan
Witney Houston

Class acts, all with amazing and diverse vocals who'd have given the men a run for their money.

Three quarters of that list is American. Hard to summon them to West London at a moment's notice. They had to get who was around and who Geldof/Ure could get hold of. No mobiles/texts/emails then remember.

Ahhh. Brilliant thanks, I wasn't really a massive fan of theirs but he seemed really good as well

A bit OT but i've seen Heaven 17 live a couple of times recently and they're fantastic. GG has a fantastic voice and he's funny. Temptation is a proper show-stopper.

George Michael really disliked Boy George as BG kept trying to out him as gay. Lots of snide comments about closets as I recall. Interesting that Boy George seems to have forgotten that!

I just came across the spparent open secret that Sade turned it down. She did do Live Aid, however. Human League also reputed to have refused.

It could have been so much worse. The Band Aid participants were quite cool compared to other big acts at the time... Cliff, Bucks Fizz, Dollar, Shaky.

Dollar were a goner by 84
Bucks Fizz were on the wane
Sade turned it down
Annie Lennox had vocal cord issues
Alison Moyet wasn't considered famous enough, apparently

Edited

Or Boy George has grown up after nearly 40 years and regrets his actions at the time, plus doesn't want to rake over the coals now that GM is dead and not there to give his side of the story.

His response seems quite tactful.

To be clear, I wasn't suggesting those acts should have participated (apart from Lennox and Moyet). I was saying be careful what you wish for!

Bucks Fizz wouldn't have been asked anyway but they had also not long before been in an awful coach accident.

It would have been a very different sound with Dollar and Bucks Fizz. They probably weren't considered cool enough to be on Band Aid anyway (alongside Cliff Richard and Shaky) although I can't say Status Quo were in any way 'cool'.

I thought the Bucks Fizz coach crash was before Band AId but it actually happened a couple of weeks afterwards.

Piggywaspushed · 05/12/2024 16:39

Yeah, I sort of wonder where Quo came from. Perhaps Bob was a bit conscious that he needed some OAPs Wink

I really love BG since seeing him in I'm a Celeb. He just comes across as a lovely guy imo. Never had much interest in him before but I think he's a true icon & has probably grown up a lot, I agree. GM's feelings about him were probably valid though

Yeah, but he looked 50!

Eyesopenwideawake · 05/12/2024 17:28

Does anyone know who the young farmer with the flat cap on the mixing desk was? Such a cool look!

I8toys · 05/12/2024 17:42

Francis Rossi and the Quo have always looked 50. Maybe it was the denim suits.

I think George Michael's side of the story would still be the same to be honest! Hopefully George has grown up but I suspect it's embarrassment on his part rather than maturity that has made him change his story.

Yeah like those teachers in primary school who looked 60 but were probably 30! 🤣

The attack he went to jail for happened 17 years ago, so he certainly hadn't grown up nicely by then!

I don't know. I grew up in that era and remember the whole BandAid/LiveAid thing, but watching it now made me think how dated it all seemed?
As in totally white male dominated? I saw Kool and the Gang, but not many other black singers, and I know Bananarama and other female singers turned up but why weren't any of them considered for any of the opening solo lines?
Maybe just a sign of the times...

I did like seeing George Michael though, and he was so humble and unassuming compared to some of the others, despite being top contender for Christmas number one that year!

George Michael was absolutely lovely and not at all affected by stardom. I met him several times, away from the spotlight, and he was always like he appeared on that programme.
Not only a great singer but a very lovely guy.
