Well I got to the end and loved it, even a dark haired RCB. Not read the book but thought AH owned the character and was dashing in that posh English public school kind of way

Took me to the last episode to realise that the Bishop (the one who was in the consortium not the awful one from episode 5) was Gruber in Allo Allo. I knew there was something familiar but couldn’t place him at all and then it just clicked

Loved Danny Dyer as Freddie and thought Valerie reminded me of Marlene in Only Fools and Horses at times

As others have said I think I will watch it again in a few weeks as there are likely lots of details missed

I have a couple of episodes to go but I still maintain Rufus Sewell could have been RCB better than the Jaws chap. I hope I have posted the right link

@Itisjustmyopinion thank you! Gruber - of course!

Just finished watching. Intrigued by where they’ll take it, from memory of the many times I read this as teen I don’t think there’s much left for a full 2nd series, just Taggie getting to know RCBs kids, Declan filming in Ireland and Maud doing her play (plus the extra marital reveals at the end). The ending surprised me, I don’t remember that happening in the book?

Anyway. I did love it. Characters were spot on, though Cameron was softer than I was expecting and Monica a little older than I imagined in my head, she didn’t seem to match Tony’s age. 80s looks, references and styles were fantastic. Poor Daisy, that was a lot harder to stomach than the book version though.

I’ll definitely watch the next season. Good excuse to re-read the books in any case.

Where the last episode finished does happen in the book, but at a different location - Cameron's house. It's the reason she flees to Penscombe.

Figgygal · 22/10/2024 08:43

I haven't read any of the books but I'm loving this even my husband who never watches what I watch has been lured in by the suggestion of smut and enjoying it.
Freddie and Lizzie love!!!

But also with a different outcome (without giving anything away I hope)!

@BasiliskStare -omg at young Sewell. He was attractive in The Diplomat as well, although older.

Jilly herself messes around with the characters' ages - in Tackle (awful) set in the present day, Rupert is supposed to be a silver fox in his early sixties, but she still references his past as an MP and minister in the 80s. If he's in his late thirties in Rivals he'd have been born around 1949/1950 and be in his mid-70s today.

@Itisjustmyopinion He also randomly popped up as the harbour master in Pirates of the Caribbean, which delighted me! No little tank though.

I always visualised a young Douglas Henshall type for Declan, very disappointed in Aidan Turner, lovely as he might otherwise be but that moustache!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh I think AT is perfect for Declan, and I am so glad they chose an Irish actor as his accent and mannerisms are spot on.

petathedragon · 22/10/2024 12:15

Why does everyone say Ruperr ?

Its annoying me

PortiaWithNoBreaks · 22/10/2024 18:25

I haven’t read the book but oh my days am I enjoying this. I love the nostalgia, the wardrobes and the characters. The soundtrack is amazing. I really like that Rupert is not physical perfection. I realised that I’ve come across most of these types of characters irl, especially my previous career.

I had no expectations of the characters but I love them all. I’m finding it all quite delicious.

I’ve been off work with a monster virus and this has been the most perfect binge.

Notonthestairs · 22/10/2024 18:29

I finished the series last night. I think we might need a thread to discuss the ending. I don't know what to think about what a series 2 might consist of.

Enjoyed all 8 episodes immensely though and will revisit to pick up on things I missed.

Read an article today, apparently they're still rutting in the shires to this day 🤣

Saveitnotforme · 22/10/2024 19:19

RC-B as Robbie Rotten is rather distracting

Riders has aged a lot worse than Rivals. Especially the rape scene.

Or maybe they don’t have the rights to it (it was made into a TV series in the 90s).

All that aside, Rivals is clearly the far better book.

tennissquare · 23/10/2024 09:36

@WillowTit , plus using horses on screen is incredibly expensive.

Re your name, surely you're hoping to be the third Mrs C-B, as 1 and 2 spots have been taken!

Good point. Or maybe I like to think I'm Taggie Campbell-Black?

In the end scene were they hinting that valarie liked the ladies? As she smiled at 2 women kissing on tv? (I think)

It was a man and woman, he was one of the shirtless ones shown earlier on. He has very nice shiny wavy hair though!

Did anyone spot Jilly's cameo?
