Keep Dancing!

Will link the Spoiler and Video Thread in posts below, not as clever as Polka for embedding links!

Tess also looks odd in jumpsuits - I don’t think they suit her, or is it just me?

I agree with you. A lot of her clothing choices do her figure no favours at all.
I've never understood her liking for one-sleeved dresses.
Or very wide-legged trousers.

I take it you haven't seen Paddington 2? Paddington is in prison in the film and there is a big song and dance number (choreographed by CRH) starring a very camp Hugh Grant. Tis a thing of beauty - Nick & Luba's version, not so much.

Nope - haven't seen it. Didn't get the significance. Still think the costumes reminded me of GBH though. It's those colours too.

Why does Aljaz do that awful gurning thing with his mouth while dancing? His jaw is in constant motion, surely judges must have pulled him up on it in the past... It makes a very appealing man look very unappealing, imo

Didn’t enjoy last night overall 🥲 think the poor costumes and music choices over several weeks are starting to wear thin!

I really liked the outfit that Tess was wearing and thought it suited her.

I’ve watched the show back and I think Nick Knowles might be in danger. His costume reminded me of The Grand Budapest Hotel or a prison for some reason and not Paddington Bear. I know he’s injured but I was expecting a lot more energy so I think his days in the show are numbered.

He should be, he was awful.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 13/10/2024 17:57

I'm watching the Come Dancing on iPlayer from 1990, looks so much earlier than 1990, would watch on a regular basis!

@MouseMinge

What is the main issue for you?

OP posts:
MouseMinge · 13/10/2024 18:24

@EineReiseDurchDieZeit

I'm not sure, which is part of the problem. I do think that all the stuff that came out about appalling behaviour took a bit of the shine off. It shouldn't matter that there are so many more men than women but I think the imbalance has affected the show or me anyway. The energy seems different and maybe it's because of what's happened or maybe because there was some "what's all the fuss about!" from the judges, especially Shirley and nothing since the BBC apology. Either keep your nose completely out of it or acknowledge that Amanda did deserve better even if not all of her complaints were upheld.

On top of there's been a lot of lack luster dances, I love Ajaz but I don't think he should have come back. It doesn't feel right. Oh and the costumes have been pure shite a lot of the time.

I'm sure I'll get over it and I've gone through similar low patches before but they've not felt as "what's the point" as this. It could also be that I've been seriously ill this year, going through treatments, major surgery, lucky to be alive. In fact it probably is. I think I'm seeing it all through shit glasses, the opposite of rose tinted. I don't think it's as "bad" as it feels. These threads keep me going though so I won't be giving up just yet and I promise not to be all doom and gloom on the thread! Well, I have been here but no more after this.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 13/10/2024 18:35

@MouseMinge

I do appreciate what you're saying. My DM won't watch this year and says the same as you that the shine has gone off it.

I hate Hallowe'en week, props, most of the singing and any FAFFIN ABAART, all of which Strictly has had in abundance but I'm there week in week out because I've watched it from Day Dot. I can't imagine not watching.

Perhaps contributing to the problem is the lack of a truly WOW routine of the sort produced early on by Kelvin Fletcher. Chris has "a" wow factor but it's for the strength of his achievement rather than the routine itself IMO

The repeats of the 1970s' Come Dancing that were shown on BBCFour last year were the single most entertaining thing I have seen in years. The disco dancing competition, the commentary, the old dears in the audience smoking and drinking their way through the performances, Ada Unsworth, the professional demonstrations (including Clifton mère and père) dancing in municipal parks, tuxedo catsuits ..... it was televisual bliss. I would be happy for them to show it all year round.

I do wonder if retired bank managers (they all seemed to be bank clerks) and respectable chairmen of local Rotary Clubs who thought 'Thank god that footage of me gyrating around in jelly sandals and skintight bell-bottoms isn't on the internet' are now feeling a little unsafe.

MouseMinge · 13/10/2024 18:39

Agree re Chris and the lack of someone who has a certain something about them and can dance. It's also early in the series and the shows are overly long I always enjoy it more when the numbers are lower. There is too much faffing around this year. I get it if your dancer is awful and you're trying to waste as much time as possible so they don't have to do too much actual dancing but everyone is doing it, even people who are good have too much of it. Len must be spinning in his grave.

Thanks for getting it.

Len must be spinning in his grave
I doubt it - he was more than happy to accept faffing abaht across the pond in return for the American dollar.

BehindTheSequinsandStilettos · 13/10/2024 18:48

Oh and sorry reise I said Icons Week was next week but it's the 2nd November.
So next week - normal, 26th presumably Halloween, 2nd Icons.
Maybe next week they could scale back the polyester and put them in proper outfits.

Ellmau · 13/10/2024 18:51

oh. I thought it was this week and was baffled by how uniconic they all were.

BehindTheSequinsandStilettos · 13/10/2024 18:56

As for the Wynne/Katya thing, allegedly the no high fives is a running joke on their social media. Not sure about the handsiness - he's pissing himself while doing it, it could be deliberate to try and make her corpse.
People said similar about Chris tickling Dianne until she shut that down.
But many of us remember the likes of Dominic, Gary and Gregg coming across poorly.

EsmaCannonball · 13/10/2024 18:57

I did have to smile at last night's Come Dancing when Len (he of NO ILLEGAL LIFTS! and STOP FAFFIN' ABAHT!) was put in charge of judging the disco and offbeat sections. I had assumed he was there for the quickstep and foxtrot or even the saunter reve but, no, he was Head of Faff.

(Incidentally, I think the old-time dances on Come Dancing are just lovely. Why can't they have the option to do one of them instead of bloody Couple's Choice? And the formation dances, while incredibly camp, we're so much clearer and more fun to watch than the general mélange that the pro dances are now.)

I, too, am a bit jaded with Strictly these days. Part of it is an increasing lack of familiarity with the celebs cast, the songs used, the films referenced, and so on, but mainly it's because the producers think that to win over new audiences they need to ditch the ballroom and latin roots which made the show distinctive from other generic talent shows in the first place. Strictly has lost what made it unique. It also doesn't help that there are celebs who I quite like this year but no-one whom I'm mad about. Mainly I'm watching for the pros and, again, it's not great that they've benched a couple I really liked and given spaces to ones who aren't that engaging.

Down Under is iconic for Oz and Billie Eilish is an icon but aye, the rest would have caused me pause.

Will be interesting what they do go for. Jackson's a dodgy choice. Elvis, Elton, Billie and Abba have been used already. Toyah channelled Tina Turner already.

As long as it's not the Dirty Dancing Lift. By Christ, even if it was Chris doing it, it gets short shrift from me! Wink

EsmaCannonball · 13/10/2024 19:05

Oh, you just wait till actual Icons' Week and we'll get to see the Strictly producers' idea of what constitutes an icon. Some poor fucker on Couple's Choice is going to have to pretend that ever since they were a tiny nipper it was their heart's desire to do a Samantha Mumba-inspired street-commercial showstopper because their nan (dead!) once stayed in a caravan in Kilkenny.

GrouchyKiwi · 13/10/2024 19:12

I was wondering if they might be doing an Icons of Strictly specifically, so we'll get someone doing Jay/Jill/Ore's jive, someone attempting Danny's samba, Alesha's chacha, Abbey's waltz, etc. And then Colin's dolls will make an appearance (if Paul is still on the show this will be his dance).

I'm hoping for a repeat of Snowdance. Maybe Chris could take that on.

CrushingOnRubies · 13/10/2024 19:17

Evening all

Sorry missed it last night but all caught up now. Think Poonam is at risk

Oh no. Tess's jacket is missing a sleeve. Must have been a rogue elevator door incident.
