Just watched the documentary about him.
I never liked the man.
I always thought he was full of s* and a dodgy character but omg what a complete bastard.
Rapist and sex pest.
I always felt he was not a genuine person. Other predators have seemed more convincing such as Stuart Hall ( admittedly I was a fan of It’s a Knockout.) and dare I say it Rolf Harris. Albeit I was a child and watched men like this on TV.
Shame this didn’t become public knowledge whilst he was still alive.

EVERYBODY KNEW - one of my friends worked at Horrids during his time there and everybody knew he was a disgusting old letch who lusted after young women.

Anybody who was there at the time and denies knowing what he was like and what he was doing is a liar.

Skipsurvey · 22/09/2024 11:41

we cant even blame it on the 70s
it started in 1985 and ended when he left harrods in 2010
is as much as we know!

even apart from this he was a totally despicable man!

GrouachMacbeth · 22/09/2024 12:54

Did he ever get the British passport he was pleading for, and claiming it was the nasty British establishment being racist?

I don't think he did. Not AFAIK anyway!

I worked on a make-up counter at Harrod's and he would do his rounds, eyeing the candy. I was warned by my colleagues that he was predatory and his attention was something very few women wanted. At the time, it was the bagpipe band and the harpist that probably got to me more than Al-Fayed's walkabout. I never observed anything other than his walk-throughs. And I never knew anyone who'd had anything to do with him. So, at the time, I just thought he was a bit of a creep who enjoyed looking at his 'hired help'.
I couldn't stand working there though. Soul destroying place.

I worked in the offices at Harrods in the late 70s so before Al Fayed was involved. I was only 17 and the bullying culture was brutal. It was a loathsome place to work. The worst employer I ever had

Holidayhell22 · 22/09/2024 14:15

I always felt he was a bit insane blaming Prince Charles for the car accident which killed Diana & Dodi.
In reality Al Fayed help kill them, insisting they get into a car driven by a drunk.
I wonder if his son(s) were the same as him. Seems hard to believe they would be pleasant which such a lech as a role model.
I sincerely hope the victims of his assaults get compensation from Al Fayed’s estate.

Generally anyone described as a Playboy, as Dodi was, wouldn't have been big on any sense of humanity to the women in his life

Wasn't Dodi actually engaged to an American woman at the time he was seen frolicking with Princess Di on MAF's yacht?

His fiancee was apparently staying on Dodi's yacht nearby 😯

What was the program called about Rotherham, the girls abused there?
It was ignored and pushed away, look at these women.
Unfortunately it's any girls and women pushed away. I wonder if we need a special female police force or arm?
I don't think we can trust the current systems to ve honest.

Oh yes I’d forgotten that Dodi was engaged at the time. I remember his father saying that he had called off his engagement as soon as it was made public he was holidaying with Diana.

Yes, awful man.

My colleague was interviewed by him, for a nanny job ( late 90’s). She turned down the job in interview he gave off such a bad vibe.

( I've known the details since early 2000’s - I have more details but don't want to share them here).

The doctor, Wendy Snell has passed away. However, in the late 1990’s there were two female doctors at Harrods, not just Wendy. I had a medical with the other one and she was keen to know if I indulged in gay sex? I laughed, as the answer was no, but I knew that whatever my answer was it would go straight to Al Fayed. She was unethical, a bit too cosy with Security for my liking and I simply didn’t trust her. I worked at senior level at the store, and I’m familiar with many of the characters involved.

Undercoverstory · 23/09/2024 15:35

I'm not at all surprised about Al-Fayed. Thoroughly unpleasant man with far too much power/money/influence. I didn't "know" he was a sex pest, but am not at all surprised that he was. It would be more surprising if he wasn't.

joolsella · 23/09/2024 17:17

A friend worked there and always used to say what a horrible person he was and he would pluck a girl from a beauty counter and promote them to his PA

joolsella · 23/09/2024 17:22

Even his Head of HR was attacked and petrified of him

the80sweregreat · 23/09/2024 17:27

A very old school friend started there before he took it over. She didn't have a good word to say about him. I wonder if he ever tried anything with her, but she was quite street wise and not his personal staff , so might have been fine. I hope so. She did stay there for many years.

Because the police were in on it. One young woman went to the police and gave them her phone, loaded with incriminating messages from him. And recordings. The phone was returned to her wiped , not even working, and no other action was taken.

Another, aged 15, mixed up a Friday and Saturday night in her statement. They immediately used it as a resin to drop the case.

SUCH a naive question, have you read the news about the Met over the last decade? And bordering on victim blaming.

Absolutely, his head of security was an ex met superintendent.

Everytime an abuser like this is exposed I live in hope that their network will be pursued to lead to other abusers and enablers, and with Al-Fayed that must equate to many people in positions of power. But I fear that the victims will be paid a settlement and that will be that. The Harrods statement annoyed me, with the stress on the acts of an individual and that they are working on speedy settlements. I wanted to see them declare that, despite taking over the company and this being different times, that they would leave no stone unturned in working with police to identity past and current crimes.

timetodecide2345 · 25/09/2024 19:41

There's a certain similarity between jimmy saville and this monster; bribing, getting police on side; getting pally with royals, meanwhile abuse, rape etc.

Funnywonder · 29/09/2024 09:09

Just watched this documentary. Sickening. My heart breaks for every one of those poor women, carrying that trauma around for so many years. Every time another one of these covert rapists is finally exposed, there's a string of enablers. The scary thing is it is almost certainly happening right this minute to another group of women and girls too terrified to speak out because the perpetrator is so 'loved', so altruistic, powerful and well connected. A wolf in sheep's clothing. Horrifying🙁
