Holy Moly!!!

I can't quite believe these horrific stories.

Anyone else watching? Has anyone had this happen?

They are so difficult to watch, they really manipulate their victims and they seem to know how to choose vulnerable people. It's easy to see the red flags when watching from home but these poor people can't see it because of their vulnerability, loneliness or naivety. I think it's brave of them to share their story, hopefully it will help others in similar situations.

clarkkentsglasses · 15/09/2024 19:53

@comedycentral I totally agree with you. I'm just so shocked. I struggle lending someone twenty quid, let alone £100k!

I first thought, they are so stupid. How can they not see it .... but you're right, the poor women are vulnerable and want to believe it's not true.

It's utterly shocking.

Very brave to share their stories.

I know, it's so sad, they wouldn't get far from me as I don't have the money 🙈 The amounts are absolutely shocking.

Laylay100 · 16/09/2024 20:28

I couldn't believe the one that thought she was talking to Gerald butler.... that was insane!

Topsysmum24 · 21/09/2024 11:28

I've been binge watching it and shouting at the TV.

"I met Simon when he was working in a pub as bar staff and the first time we met, he told me all about how wealthy he is and how he's waiting to sell multiple properties in America" RED FLAG!!! RED FLAG!!!

"He quickly moved into the shed at the bottom of my garden" I bet he bloody did! Can't say I've ever had a rich bloke living in my shed.

"After 6 months, I gave him a credit card. Why wouldn't I support my boyfriend with his business venture?" Because you've only known him for 6 MONTHS!!! And what happened to all of the multiple properties he was selling in America? 6 months down the line and he's still skint and hasn't sold at least one of the properties?

"I received his phone bill that I'd been paying" Why would you pay an adult's phone bill?

These people are so vulnerable and naive, I've noticed that a lot of them are very inexperienced in relationships. Most of them had either never had a relationship before or had been recently divorced from a very long marriage where they'd married at a young age and so never really dated before.

Titsalenabumflop · 21/09/2024 23:23

I've just watched 4 episodes of season 1 of Love Rats on Netflix. Gary has just got 10 years in prison, thank goodness, disgusting piece of shit, hope he gets beaten up in there. Why did they not mention anything about the £170,000 he stole from Carol? Where is all the money? Surely she should get it back, it can't have disappeared into thin air.

Shackalak · 22/09/2024 21:32

This happened to me in 2010/11. I’m not stupid. I was just vulnerable at the time. My heart goes out to these people.

forevernumb · 23/09/2024 00:04

There are some shocking stories on there!

Mental!

Matharoibreach · 24/09/2024 18:25

I was recently scammed out of €300, I never ever thought I’d fall for anything like this. These poor women!

forevernumb · 25/09/2024 10:17

The woman who got married to the 30 year old Sri Lankan. I think this series shows how these victims are just ordinary people who for a variety of reasons get hooked by these people. It's so sad as usually they are the people who can least afford to lose money.

MinnieCauldwell · 25/09/2024 17:24

I have watched out of order so just finished season 2, yet to watch season 1.
Why do none of these women google? I google the hell out of everyone. If a loved one was in an oil rig disaster in Mexico it would be on the fucking internet!
I get being vunerable but come on, if he did need an operation wouldnt you check out the hospital first?

lololulu · 25/09/2024 20:05

You can sort of understand how the ones who thought they were in a relationship get sucked in but some of them had never even met.

The Oil Rig one!!!

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 25/09/2024 20:27

The one (not sure which season) who managed to get three women to sell their houses within a few months of knowing one another shocked me. Managing to get out of the actual legal wedding twice is crazy. He was a piece of work!

The other one who was actually married but lived a double life also had my eyebrows raised as the 'rat' had actually been showing signs of not being committed.

Hopefully the shows spreads awareness.

DitzyDerbyBabe86 · 25/09/2024 21:57

So glad there are other people watching this who think it’s wild.
Ive just watched the episode with the woman who gave £20,000 to Kevin, the bloke she’d been talking to for 7 weeks, but never even met. Like wtf!!
They must be so vulnerable, but it’s so hard to sit and watch episodes like this without thinking they must also be insane to think it’s a normal thing to be doing, wiring a complete stranger £700 for his dog!?

MinnieCauldwell · 26/09/2024 18:29

I do wonder if there is a slight element of greed with some of the women too, they seem impressed straight away when the men start spinning tales of inheritences and big houses, allmsense goes out tge window.

Seaweed42 · 26/09/2024 19:09

Most of the victims were lonely or very emotionally hurt or feeling disconnected in some way.

All of them are 'rescuers' too.
They thrive on being needed. It defines their self worth.
Their guilt increases when someone else appears to be suffering and that creates an overriding compulsion to help.

SeriouslyStressed · 26/09/2024 21:58

The problem seems to be that these men/gangsters dangle a lot of wealth and then "can't access" it because waiting for house sale/probate/bank account to be unfrozen etc

So they ask for £20, then £80, then £200, then £1000, then £5000 etc etc

These people must be so generous and trusting, I wouldn't even lend £5 to someone I'd never met!

It must be a massive job for the gangs of scammers to keep track of the storylines and their lies

In the first episode of season 2, the gang would do a 'handover' so the next shift knew where they'd left off and could continue the chat.

CatLady22222 · 30/09/2024 13:52

I was shouting at the TV! The victims are obviously vulnerable, but also not very bright. That woman who gave 400,000 to two guys she'd just met on the internet! I struggle lending money to those I know, let alone someone I've never met!

At least the series raises awareness about romance fraud. People watching will know what to look out for. The stories these fraudsters make up are so similar! There's usually some sort of catastrophe, they're usually "rich", a family member is dead or suddenly dies and they usually ask for money very quickly. What's sad is that some never get caught and those that do serve a very short prison sentence and reoffend once released.

Very annoying watch!

forevernumb · 01/10/2024 10:20

Just watched another one and these two women say they knew something wasn't right but they still went ahead with sending money 🙄 Both were emotionally vulnerable but I still don't understand it.

FastFood · 01/10/2024 10:24

I feel bad for those guys who really work on oil rigs, no one will ever believe them again.

WinterAconite · 01/10/2024 10:28

I've watched the first one. I place the blame solely on the scammers. Not the victim.

petathedragon · 05/10/2024 16:17

Some of the scammers are so conniving and go go extreme lengths to con these women

I really struggle with the stories where they have transferred their life savings but never met the person or even video called

There's a woman in series two with a Phd!

petathedragon · 05/10/2024 16:21

I also cannot fathom why these women think that rich successful businessmen need to ask their new girlfriend (or someone they have only exchanged texts with) to bail them out

They don't have family or friends or business associates they can ask?
