Gemma Whelan is back as dogged Detective Sergeant Sarah Collins for a third series of ITV hit The Tower - but this time she’s the one breaking the rules.

S2

www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4877580-the-tower-s2-mon-itv-1-9pm-tv-pace-no-spoilers

The series sees Sarah faced with the case of a stabbing of a young teenager and in the midst of it, she crosses paths once again with Lizzie (Tahirah Sharif) who is juggling being a new detective and a mother.

According to the official synopsis, Sarah is also brought "into conflict with DI Kieran Shaw who is running Operation Perseus, an undercover police task force set up to bring down South London drug kingpin Shakiel Oliver".

Gemma Whelan is back as dogged Detective Sergeant Sarah Collins for a third series of ITV (www.mirror.co.uk/all-about/itv) hit The Tower (www.mirror.co.uk/tv/tv-news/itv-delights-fans-return-hugely-33143709). After previously putting her police work above her personal happiness, Sarah is now romancing new girlfriend Julie (Camilla Beeput), who viewers will remember from series two.

However, this time it’s not just Sarah’s duties getting in the way of her love life, it’s also the immutable fact that Julie is a police witness.

Gemma explains, “It’s very complicated, because her girlfriend Julie was a witness in the Tower case, and that is directly against her by-the-book policing.

It’s highly frowned upon, sleeping with a witness. But she is trying to have a bit of a life as well, and we see whether or not that is possible.

It adds an interesting flavour to Sarah’s journey this season and I do think we see a different side of her. When she’s with Julie, she feels like she is lighter in some way.

This time around Gemma is investigating the fatal stabbing of a teenage boy in the street and only has one witness to the crime, another teen named Ryan (Lamar Waves).

While familiar characters from the show return, much has changed for all of them, leaving Sarah more alone than before.

Lizzie Adama (Tahirah Sharif) now has a baby from her relationship with DI Kieran Shaw (Emmett J Scanlan), and he is still living with his wife and trying to save his marriage, while also running an undercover operation.

DC Steve Bradshaw (Jimmy Akingbola), meanwhile, is deep undercover working for Kieran, and it becomes apparent early on that Sarah’s murder investigation is destined to become entangled with theirs.

Based on Gallowstree Lane, the third of Kate London’s Metropolitan books, the series also features fan favourite character Lizzie balancing being a single mother with her job as a detective on the same force as her baby’s father.

“Lizzie finds herself stuck trying to deal with the guilt that comes with working long hours and not spending time with her child, and not wanting to show any vulnerability at work to her peers, and wanting to appear in control,” Tahirah says. “We find her in quite a difficult spot.

The father of her child is not in the family home, he’s still married, and I don’t think at the beginning Lizzie has accepted where she is, she’s just trying to forge ahead like she always does.”

Her juggling act is on display when Sarah visits Lizzie to quiz her about what she knows about the knife murder while Lizzie is cooking her son’s fish fingers for dinner, and he starts to cry for his food.

“That scene was minimal acting required, because I had an actual baby who was screaming, and I was trying to make the fish fingers and deal with talking to Gemma’s character at the same time,” laughs Tahirah. “We had a lot to deal with on set, working with a very young child and trying to get these words out but I really enjoyed it for so many different reasons, and because it was so authentic.”

Thought it was pretty damned good.

Right, off to check out Sherwood now, but I'm not expecting much more than comedy value! This has been much the better written series.

Italiangreyhound · 08/09/2024 22:46

I love this series but the fact they are all in each other's pockets is quite annoying!

ElderPrice · 09/09/2024 08:57

Just finished s3. I thought the first series was more "interesting" story wise but I enjoyed s2 and this latest one too. I found the Lizzie character a little underwritten (if that's the right term) and maybe the actress wasn't able to do much more with the part. But she ended up being the least convincing character for me.

If there is a s4, I'm assuming the plot will probably focus on Shakiel organising/getting revenge on Steve. Not sure if they can keep the s1 tower crime connection in it anymore though.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 10/09/2024 18:37

Found that quite depressing. Poor Ryan. Preyed on by others. Kieran 😢 Ryan shouting he didn’t do it- are we meant to think Steve did it?

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/09/2024 10:54

I missed Ryan shouting he didn't do it ?

Why wouid Steve shoot his friend

I assumed it just meant that the gun went off in a struggle.

Samcro · 11/09/2024 11:18

i really felt for Ryan. what a good actor.

what was on the phone?

PrincessScarlett · 11/09/2024 11:29

Yeah I thought Ryan shouted "I didn't mean to do it" rather than "I didn't do it".

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 11/09/2024 12:49

Thank you
will have a rewatch. Felt so sorry for Ryan

diddl · 14/09/2024 19:35

Finally got around to watching it.

Didn't care at all about Kieran-revolting old letch!

So if there's a S4 wonder what it will be about.

Hope to God Lizzie isn't in it!

NoMoreCheddar · 19/09/2024 20:05

I just finished season 3, it was great.

All 3 seasons are really good so I'm surprised it doesn't seem to get talked about as much as shows like Sherwood.

Good writing, excellent acting and well directed. Wish there more shows as well written around.

Italiangreyhound · 21/09/2024 16:14

It was all good but I felt the phone thing was overplayed. What did it prove?

Nothing in the end as it was destroyed!

Did it have the other PO being racist?

ETA The PO who fell from the tower with Farah. Think it proved that he had used racist language about her/her family.

Italiangreyhound · 22/09/2024 12:25

diddl

Yes, I think you are right. But Farah did still kidnap a small boy and take him to the top of a tower!

Indeed!

Was it her phone & she wanted it back?

Italiangreyhound · 22/09/2024 13:43

Maybe.

Has Lizzie's dad or boyfriend put money into the show or something?
Every few minutes reference to how cute, beautiful, pretty she is - shoehorned in.
She can't act anyway.

Brendan from Hollyoaks - same in everything!

GW is the only decent one there - this actress needs to be given more work - she can actually act!

I think that's harsh tbh.

I just finished the series and thought it was very good.
Yet it doesn't get the same amount of praise as other shows do.
Why, I wonder ?

Was it a prison officer or a police man who slipped Ryan the note ?

It really goes to show what the police, parents and society are up against with the likes of Shakiel and the hold they have over impressionable children like Ryan.

Edited

Yes but as PP said I really didn't get the Farah thing - she kidnapped and nearly killed a small child. How is she the victim in all this?!

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/09/2024 18:56

@deeahgwitch I think it would be a dodgy prison officer as recap says note was from shakiel

Ryan remembers everything that has happened before being taken away in cuffs.
He has a note saying, “You did it, my guy” from Shakiel.

Maybe she was just desperate to be heard/believed?

Can't remember it all tbh but did the police essentially close ranks?

Not really an excuse to kidnap a young child and nearly throw them off a building. Kind of in a different league to being called names by a police officer.

I suppose it was that attitude that pushed her over the edge!

I'm an immigrant myself and whereas racist jokes by a police officer would be offensive and deserve to be reported, it in no way excuses (or even explains!) kidnap and attempted murder of a child. That's just not in the same league and does not carry the same punishment in law.
