Gemma Whelan is back as dogged Detective Sergeant Sarah Collins for a third series of ITV hit The Tower - but this time she’s the one breaking the rules.

S2

The series sees Sarah faced with the case of a stabbing of a young teenager and in the midst of it, she crosses paths once again with Lizzie (Tahirah Sharif) who is juggling being a new detective and a mother.

According to the official synopsis, Sarah is also brought "into conflict with DI Kieran Shaw who is running Operation Perseus, an undercover police task force set up to bring down South London drug kingpin Shakiel Oliver".

Gemma Whelan is back as dogged Detective Sergeant Sarah Collins for a third series of ITV (www.mirror.co.uk/all-about/itv) hit The Tower (www.mirror.co.uk/tv/tv-news/itv-delights-fans-return-hugely-33143709). After previously putting her police work above her personal happiness, Sarah is now romancing new girlfriend Julie (Camilla Beeput), who viewers will remember from series two.

However, this time it’s not just Sarah’s duties getting in the way of her love life, it’s also the immutable fact that Julie is a police witness.

Gemma explains, “It’s very complicated, because her girlfriend Julie was a witness in the Tower case, and that is directly against her by-the-book policing.

It’s highly frowned upon, sleeping with a witness. But she is trying to have a bit of a life as well, and we see whether or not that is possible.

It adds an interesting flavour to Sarah’s journey this season and I do think we see a different side of her. When she’s with Julie, she feels like she is lighter in some way.

This time around Gemma is investigating the fatal stabbing of a teenage boy in the street and only has one witness to the crime, another teen named Ryan (Lamar Waves).

While familiar characters from the show return, much has changed for all of them, leaving Sarah more alone than before.

Lizzie Adama (Tahirah Sharif) now has a baby from her relationship with DI Kieran Shaw (Emmett J Scanlan), and he is still living with his wife and trying to save his marriage, while also running an undercover operation.

DC Steve Bradshaw (Jimmy Akingbola), meanwhile, is deep undercover working for Kieran, and it becomes apparent early on that Sarah’s murder investigation is destined to become entangled with theirs.

Based on Gallowstree Lane, the third of Kate London’s Metropolitan books, the series also features fan favourite character Lizzie balancing being a single mother with her job as a detective on the same force as her baby’s father.

“Lizzie finds herself stuck trying to deal with the guilt that comes with working long hours and not spending time with her child, and not wanting to show any vulnerability at work to her peers, and wanting to appear in control,” Tahirah says. “We find her in quite a difficult spot.

The father of her child is not in the family home, he’s still married, and I don’t think at the beginning Lizzie has accepted where she is, she’s just trying to forge ahead like she always does.”

Her juggling act is on display when Sarah visits Lizzie to quiz her about what she knows about the knife murder while Lizzie is cooking her son’s fish fingers for dinner, and he starts to cry for his food.

“That scene was minimal acting required, because I had an actual baby who was screaming, and I was trying to make the fish fingers and deal with talking to Gemma’s character at the same time,” laughs Tahirah. “We had a lot to deal with on set, working with a very young child and trying to get these words out but I really enjoyed it for so many different reasons, and because it was so authentic.”

Jesus, gripping but uncomfortable viewing. Is tomorrow night the last one?

I like that Sarah is seeing a blurred line with Kieran as that is how it has been written for the viewer to see. Yes, he's a dodgy cop but is his dodgy cop persona actually for the greater good? Kieran was hugely unlikeable in series 1. This series is showing his softer side, his feelings for Lizzie, his friendship with Steve, wanting to protect kids caught up in gangs, helping Sarah who he has always hated for her 'to the book' policing. I'm thinking he's going to get himself killed, be a hero and never be held accountable for his part in Farrah's death and that Sarah will have to be at peace with that.

Very plausible! I don't really remember anything about the previous series, and I'm not sure I even saw all of it, but the rooftop scene (helpfully reprised in tonight's episode) was vaguely familiar.

daffodilandtulip · 05/09/2024 07:06

Makes you wonder what's going on in the real police around you, with all this secret ops stuff.

duc748 · 05/09/2024 11:42

It does make me think, right, there's real-life undercover cops out there doing what Steve's doing? Literally taking their life in their hands every day, if they get found out. Who the hell reckons that constitutes a good career path? Where do they find people crazy enough to do this ridiculously risky work?

PrincessScarlett · 05/09/2024 14:15

@duc748 I'm guessing the pay must be amazing.

Steve has spent 2 years away from his kids whilst undercover so there must be some almighty benefit to warrant that sacrifice.

This

Would need amazing pay or have a huge bonus /pension /death payout

Would assume be no Family men but he's a dad

Oh shit, Steve is in danger 😱

PrincessScarlett · 05/09/2024 22:01

Well even though I kind of predicted Kieran would die saving Steve, I've been absolutely blubbing 😭

Blondeshavemorefun · 05/09/2024 22:04

Oh wow. That was intense

Well done who called keiren would die but sad

Glad Steve was ok but oh how silly to literally round the corner do a hand slap.

Anyone could have seen

And they did !!!

So steves actions basically caused keiren to die

Would have been better to take him to station and let his boss see him being jailed like him and then released once bloke was in his cell

Glad Steve got ice cream with his boys

Assume won’t be uc in s4 if been in that role for 2yrs

That’s a long time to be away from kids

Not sure why or how keiren got shot. All was going well
And then Ryan Shot. What we didn’t see why he did

There will be a s4 due to the little slip of paper ryan had on him

Glad wife /phone was destroyed finally

Sister Tia was ok and sarah saves the day /her

Recap e4

So was Ryan handed the note by a police officer or did he have it on him? If by police officer then Shakiel has at least one corrupt cop working for him?

The note said "my guy, you did it". Had Ryan been set up by Shakiel to kill the police officer responsible for bringing him down? There was a look between Ryan and Shakiel as Shakiel was being driven away. I did think it was because Shakiel thought Ryan had betrayed him (after the whole being betrayed by someone you love chat) but now I'm not so sure.

Blondeshavemorefun · 05/09/2024 22:28

That's a good point about the note

Inside cop. Like sherwood 😂

I thought maybe it meant that he did it and well done. My guy as his mate

But yes hadnt thought how he got the note all rolled up

Must be spycop. But who?

I enjoyed the finale, very slightly predictable but I think it was a fitting ending. I didn't want them to open the original top of the tower case from S1 as I can't remember it v clearly!

Thought Steve might be killed so I'm glad it wasn't him after the sacrifice of being undercover so long.

I think Ryan got the note from a cop - he must have done. Definitely setting things up for S4!

I have enjoyed it but I find Sarah very earnest and tedious - I suppose you do need to be pretty serious in that kind of work!

TransformerZ · 05/09/2024 23:16

Has Lizzie's dad or boyfriend put money into the show or something?
Every few minutes reference to how cute, beautiful, pretty she is - shoehorned in.
She can't act anyway.

Brendan from Hollyoaks - same in everything!

GW is the only decent one there - this actress needs to be given more work - she can actually act!

PrincessScarlett · 06/09/2024 07:12

Yes possibly series 4 all about who is a dodgy cop. Kind of goes full circle from series 1.

Enjoyed Steve telling Sarah that Kieran was a good guy. You could tell that she has really struggled with that realisation.

Ryan was totally screwed over by everyone. Pretty depressing. Interesting that you picked up on us not seeing Ryan shoot Kieran @Blondeshavemorefun as could have gone done the route of us not seeing what happened on top of The Tower in series 1. But think it was more for suspense for us viewers not knowing if Steve or Kieran had been shot. As soon as Steve walked out we knew.

What happened to Ryan was utterly depressing.

Just finished this. Started off a bit iffy then became good. Very depressing what happened to Ryan. But I came straight onto this thread to try and understand the note. I see no one is quite sure who passed it to him and what it meant

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/09/2024 18:09

Radio times said was it Steve

But recap said it was bad drugs man

I assumed Shakiel had people 'on the inside' who could get to Ryan and basically remind him to be a good little boy.

XelaM · 08/09/2024 09:42

JSMill · 07/09/2024 15:45

What happened to Ryan was utterly depressing.

He was utterly brainless. He had the chance to walk away but as soon as he saw Lizzie (who is very annoying btw!) walk towards the house he shot. A total moron, but quite realistic portrayal of a young gang member.

Really liked season 3 - very gripping! Glad that Tower incident is finally put to rest. I really didn't have that much sympathy with Farrah and her anti-social family that first made their neighbour's life miserable and then kidnapped and nearly killed her kid!

Kieran's wife was an absolute saint btw.

xxSideshowAuntSallyxx · 08/09/2024 09:53

I thought it was the prison guard who gave him the note as he got in the van to go to YOs.

Sad that Kieran was killed, I have a massive soft spot for Emmett aka Brendan from Hollyoaks though.

I think it was good they showed how Sarah and Kieran aren't that much different when you look deeper they both want the same thing. Her girlfriend being Farrah's teacher must surely be a conflict of interest.
