Anyone remember the medical drama ER

I watched part of it when it was on in the nineties but since then have rewatched it several times from the start.

If I'm ever sick in hospital I want Dr Greene to treat me. He's so kind, so easy going and so reliable and trustworthy. Plus a good doctor obviously and the actor who played him I thought was one of the best on the show.

I thought Luka Kovac was a really good replacement for Doug Ross. In fact I think I liked the Luka character more. I thought he was more attractive too. He was so tall and George Clooney seemed a bit short.

The show although dated in parts (payphones, pagers, home telephones) is still a really great show. The cost to make it must have been huge as each episode contains so many extras and often they are set out of the hospital in different locations. Each episode is like watching a good film.

I want to speak like Elizabeth Corday with her clipped english accent. I like the character too although she is quite abrupt at times. I was so sad that she didn't get her happy ending when Mark died.

Romano was a great character and gave the show an angle it hadn't had before. I loved the whole arm getting cut off thing but dying by a helicopter falling on him was just silly. One of the few times I thought ER had lost the plot and was about to go downhill. Who can forget when we saw his softer side operating on his dog and of course glimpses of him being kind to Elizabeth when Mark was dying.

Kerry Weaver - the actress who plays her is only in her thirties at the start Did anyone else think she was older?

I didn't really like Cleo or Chen. Cleo just seemed miserable all the time and Chen just seemed to be a bit of smart ass. Lucy really annoyed me when she first arrived and I was glad when they killed her off.

It was very strange to see Mariska Hargitay playing a needy people pleaser character after being used to her kick ass character in Special Victims Unit.

Where did Maria Bello go. One minute she was there, the next she had left.

Loved her line when she said to Carter about giving him the tour of Cockroach Manor. What a great name for a house

It's not surprising that George Clooney ended up a heart-throb. The show really pushed this angle on him with him rescuing drowning boys and standing up for abused children. Lots of shots of him in nice clothes/tux etc and of course potraying him as having lots of women begging to go out with him and of course his father rejecting him to pull on our heartstrings and want to mother him. I don't actually think George Clooney was a very good actor. A bit wooden. Other characters far surpassed his acting skills. He was obviously good for the show though with his good looks and his lovable rogue character.

I thought Anthony Edwards who played Mark was a great actor and he got alot of great story lines that he played so well (getting beaten up, the brain tumour and the dying of course). I cried buckets when he died. So well done ER.

Carter was good and so cute when he first appeared on the show (and so young looking). I liked his character and his relationship with Dr Benton.

If I need surgery I'll have Peter B please. He was a great character who spoke his mind. It was good they showed his softer side with his son story line.

I was jeleous of Abbey when she had Carter and Luka fighting over her (sigh).

I like the congo scenes and they must have been expensive to shoot.

I liked the aids story line with Jeanie who i thought was really pretty. She played it well and was a good character.

Who didn't swoon went Luka beat up the neighbour who hit Abbey.

Last but definately not least how amazing was it that Carol was only meant to be in it for one or two episodes as a temporary character but she ended up being such a central role. I felt really stressed out though when she bought that house right next to the rail line that was falling down. Glad her and George got their happy ending.

What's your thoughts on the show. Do you agree or disagree with my comments. The show went downhill from about series 12 onwards which was a shame.

Lets have a good ole natter and feel nostalgic for the nineties and ER.

p.s. If you're younger than about 50 you might have no clue what I am talking about.

I loved it as a teenager. Really influenced my decision to be a doctor.

Only character I couldn’t stand was carol Hathaway. The original virtue signaller! I’ve met ppl like her in health though!

This is so interesting. Someone earlier said they became a nurse because of ER and now we have a doctor.

Also I'm sure I read that Carol was meant to be a temporary character who sucessfully kills herself but audiences loved her so much they made her permanent. Obviously they didn't poll the mumsnet readers as you're the third person to say you didn't like her.

I have a vague memory that Carole and Doug Ross were living happily near some water, not sure if they were married or not and had a child or maybe two? Think that was in the last episode.

Someone might remember that or maybe I'm making it up. 😆

Carol had their twin daughters after Doug left. She finally decided her future was with Doug & flew out to wherever it was he moved to. She went to his house & he was at his boat which was moored at the bottom of his garden, when she arrived

They both appeared one of the last episodes when Neela went to collect organs for a transplant. It was nice to see reference to them still being together

Love ER - I watched it when it was originally aired and rewatched it 2 years ago.
The Jeanie storyline with aids brought back some memories of growing up during that time.

My favourite was Carter, always been.
Also, how brilliant was Sally Fields as Abby's mum? I hated her when I was young, but rewatching it, what a fantastic actress.

Another thing that I totally missed when I watched it young, was the state of the hospital and healthcare in the US, and how it affected the most vulnerable I was too young to understand that properly.

Amazing series.

Yes the whole aids thing was rife when I was a teenager debating sleeping with my first serious boyfriend. I refused to sleep with him till he got an aids test as he had 'dated' the school 'tart'

Yes i didn't like the Sally Fields storyline when I was younger but as an oldie now I can see Sally Fields did a great job.

I was always shocked at the amount of people that were homeless and just in for a bath and food. I don't know if they really do that with homeless people or not in America but it was a constant theme. They even had a regular homeless man Paulo.

I rewatched it recently for the first time and was amazed that my previously most-hated characters – Weaver and Romano – became my favourites. So well-drawn and nuanced. Still had a massive crush on Doug Ross, he's just so dreamy.

I can't believe it's taken to page 3 of the thread for someone to say they loved George Clooney. I was expecting droves of mumsnet readers to be saying they fantasised about playing with his stethoscope (oh er!)

Weaver and Romano were great characters although I always though Weavers job must have been really stressful.

Oh and Susan! I LOVED Susan! And she was so beautiful too.

If you see pictures on the internet of what Susan actress is meant to look like now she looks really good for her age. Not sure if she has had work done or just blessed with great genes.

I loved Susan and Carole, wasn’t fussed on Abby at all. Elizabeth, Neela and the nurses (Lydia, Haleh, Connie, Lily, Chuni, Yosh) and the front desk staff (big Jerry, miserable Frank, Randi) we’re all great.

Euro-Clooney didn’t appeal much (sorry Luka) but my heart belonged to Mark and Carter. Benton was complicated but mostly I wanted to whack him with a frying pan for being so goddamned arrogant.

Romano was hilarious, Carrie Weaver was complicated and not the bitch I thought her when I was young. (She also directed a lot).

When Susan lost custody of Little Susie my heart broke. When, despite knowing Mark loved her and loving him back, she still moved away to be near Susie, I cried for about a day.

You don’t have to be old to know er. My 20-something kids watched it.

thats great your kids in their twenties have seen it. I remember reading that Friends had become cool with the youngsters and they were enjoying it through a retro lense. Got to be the mark of a great show though when people are still watching it 30 years after it aired in 1994. Long live ER!

Yes you really wanted to have a harem of all the men - Mark to be the sensible, kind husband type, Luka for the moody brooding mysterious good looking one, Carter for the cute one to go to ball games and plays bowls with, George Clooney for a challenge to snare him. Between them they almost made a perfect man.

Loved ER

the three story lines I remember are the young surgeon Benton was so hard on he killed himself, he was in the ER and Benton was paging him and they realised he was the patient. Carter and Ken’s baby 😭 and Green’s daughter turning up at the end to interview for the program as a new graduate!

plus all the rest! Trailblazing show

this time round re watching it I have realised that Gant who was the one who killed himself was in the series House with Hugh Laurie. I didn't recognise him till this time round.

You're right though - it was a dramatic moment when they realised it was Gant on the table.

I forgot about Rachel trying to follow in her old man's footsteps. A justified tribute to Mark Greene character.

I'm 44 and this is one of my all-time favourite shows. It was our 9pm Thursday watch all through my teens. Hearing the opening credits still gives me the chills! My favourite part was always Benton's karate chop with the stethoscope.

Carol was prickly at times (I vastly prefer JM as Alicia Florrick) but I have re-watched Doug and Carol's happy ending so many times on YouTube. I was absolutely in love with Doug Ross- not George Clooney, but specifically him as Doug.

I loved the final scene of the final episode where they pan out to show the whole hospital for the first time.

I loved ER and the lovely Dr Greene. I remember the one where he was beaten up, it was awful to watch I've never forgotten it.

He was a great actor though Anthony Edwards. One of the best on the show. Very Believable.
I really wanted him to get a happy ending although of course the tumour/dying story line was great to watch.

I spent the winter rewatching all series on More4!

But regarding the racism, sexism etc- I thought it was ahead of its time in addressing these issues. The 90s was a time when some people still felt compelled to stay in the closet, and I thought Weaver's gradual coming out was handled really well.

Certainly the conversations around race were very different and more open in ER compared to anything you would see on British TV then, and arguably even today (I'm thinking of the black contestants on Race Across the World often saying "We're getting unfriendly reactions from people/ not getting lifts because they don't like people being different ", without ever seemingly being allowed to utter the "R" word 🙄)

All my favourite characters in ER were female I think- Carole, Abby and Neela. Especially the former two seemed to portray much more rounded human beings than any of the men, and Neela was an understated comic genius. (Although out of the minor characters I had a massive crush on Lucien Devenko, and I think Neela should have got together with him).

Neela was just so pretty. She was a good character too but I just thought she was a really pretty actress.

I re-watched it from beginning to end last year and was amazed how well it held up; it’s better than some current shows!

I loved Carter at the beginning but he annoyed me towards the end but loved the idea of him being fantastically wealthy and still working as a doctor and the interplay of that with Benton who had had to fight his way up the ranks was so skilfully done.

I felt Susan was representative of a lot of women who handle things well and get put upon because they put everyone else first.

Carol was beautifully played I think. The reasons for her reticence gradually revealed.
She has moved on to some high profile roles but do we see the actors who played Mark and Abby in anything nowadays? They were so good. I’ve seen the Mark actor in a few films I think?

I also liked the way that they rarely referred to Kerry’s disability but in one episode she was shown going home and she just paused in front of her front door and held her leg in pain and fatigue , and it was never referred to again. In other words, the pain she was living and working with was constant.

Edited

I liked the Carter being rich storyline too although I did have to wonder if anyone is his position would really want to give rectals, clean up sick and all the other horrible jobs he had to do as a med student.

I guess we were meant to think he was very noble and wanted to help people despite being rich but hard to believe it would ever really happen.

Stupid question - but what was the reason for Carols reticence? Did I miss something.

Mark was in top gun wasn't he? He was Tom Cruises pal who gets killed. Think that was before ER though from memory. Took me a while to realise this as he has hair and a moustache in Top Gun and looks quite different. I think he went on to directing after ER although I saw he did a cameo appearance in Special Victims Unit.

I’m 36 and was obsessed with ER, definitely need a rewatch!

I loved Abby and Sam. I must have started watching a couple of seasons in because I didn’t see the George clooney episodes. Carter and Benton were there, I loved Kerry weaver and I’ll always be team Luca! There were so many fantastic episodes though, do you remember the one with quite a well known actor taking Luca hostage and putting his hand in a vice? Pratt’s death is another of my most memorable moments, when he said he was scared. I loved Abby’s wedding. The congo episodes were incredible as well, I must have been 16ish watching those and I felt so uneducated, I’d never seen anything like it.

I remember thinking Luka was so exotic when he joined the show. This tall dark handsome actor from a far away country (because I'm pretty sure I didn't know where Crotia was back then) with his sexy accent.

The internet has changed things and of course we watch lots of foreign actors/films now but back then most of the programes we watched were just british people in them like Casualty or Blind Date or Eastenders. Luka was like a new exotic man that we were not used to.

Hard to believe we only used to have 3 channels to watch (then 4, then 5) before the days of SKY dishes. Completely different to now with our thousands of streaming options.

Loved it. Weird to see Romano as a balding grown man after seeing him in the Fame (1980) with wild curly hair.

I really can’t remember how it finished, like the last episode of the last series.

It finished perfectly.

The last few episodes actually built up to the perfect ending.

Willmafrockfit · 31/07/2024 06:12

i was rewatching it on 4od
always liked Dr Greene best and Luka later
i never got to catch up with Luka this time though.
i watched quite a few but some of the stories were pretty ott

I love ER! My mum used to let me to stay up to watch it when it was on and I've rewatched a few times as an adult as well.
My favourites were Dr Weaver and Dr Greene

My vote for the worst and most miserable character in the whole show was Mark's first wife. She was miserable, whiny, cheated on Mark and I really just didn't like her. Anyone else think she was horrible?

When younger i wouldve agreed with this but watching again Mark moved from job to job and expected her to follow without discussion, he was barely at home when Rachel was young. Yet when Jen's career started to take off, he did not like it, wouldn't compromise despite many discussions. That was one part of his character that I really disliked and I'm glad Jen stood up to him eventually, but I don't think she had an affair did she? There was the guy Greg from work who she was friends with but I don't think anything happened there, Mark didn't like it though but he couldn't talk what with his relationship with Susan

CleftChin · 31/07/2024 06:55

Lucy really annoyed me when she first arrived and I was glad when they killed her off.

Jesus.. no.. that episode was horrific. Amazing but terrible. I did think that how they treated the character development of Carter from then on was very good though.

Coastalcreeksider · 31/07/2024 06:56

Something else I seem to remember from the series, I'm sure that Dr Romano asked Kerry to marry him at one point. She turned him down. Anyone else remember that?

I really can’t remember how it finished, like the last episode of the last series.

The final scene was an emergency coming in. They are outside waiting on the ambulances. Mark Greene’s daughter is there having started her medical career. She stands watching, not sure what to do or how to proceed. John Carter shouts to her (as he wheels a patient inside), are you coming Dr Greene. She smiles. The end.

It ended like it started but it started with Mark Greene doing the same to Carter.

EnjoyingTheSilence · 31/07/2024 07:56

Between top gun and er, I e seen Anthony Edwards die so many times and each time it still gets me!

And I know I’m in the minority but I loved the later seasons too. Archie was such a shit to begin with but was then amazing (think he was the kid from Critters, really showing my age now!) loved Ray and omg, Pratt.

might have to go back and watch it all again!
