I watched part of it when it was on in the nineties but since then have rewatched it several times from the start.

If I'm ever sick in hospital I want Dr Greene to treat me. He's so kind, so easy going and so reliable and trustworthy. Plus a good doctor obviously and the actor who played him I thought was one of the best on the show.

I thought Luka Kovac was a really good replacement for Doug Ross. In fact I think I liked the Luka character more. I thought he was more attractive too. He was so tall and George Clooney seemed a bit short.

The show although dated in parts (payphones, pagers, home telephones) is still a really great show. The cost to make it must have been huge as each episode contains so many extras and often they are set out of the hospital in different locations. Each episode is like watching a good film.

I want to speak like Elizabeth Corday with her clipped english accent. I like the character too although she is quite abrupt at times. I was so sad that she didn't get her happy ending when Mark died.

Romano was a great character and gave the show an angle it hadn't had before. I loved the whole arm getting cut off thing but dying by a helicopter falling on him was just silly. One of the few times I thought ER had lost the plot and was about to go downhill. Who can forget when we saw his softer side operating on his dog and of course glimpses of him being kind to Elizabeth when Mark was dying.

Kerry Weaver - the actress who plays her is only in her thirties at the start Did anyone else think she was older?

I didn't really like Cleo or Chen. Cleo just seemed miserable all the time and Chen just seemed to be a bit of smart ass. Lucy really annoyed me when she first arrived and I was glad when they killed her off.

It was very strange to see Mariska Hargitay playing a needy people pleaser character after being used to her kick ass character in Special Victims Unit.

Where did Maria Bello go. One minute she was there, the next she had left.

Loved her line when she said to Carter about giving him the tour of Cockroach Manor. What a great name for a house

It's not surprising that George Clooney ended up a heart-throb. The show really pushed this angle on him with him rescuing drowning boys and standing up for abused children. Lots of shots of him in nice clothes/tux etc and of course potraying him as having lots of women begging to go out with him and of course his father rejecting him to pull on our heartstrings and want to mother him. I don't actually think George Clooney was a very good actor. A bit wooden. Other characters far surpassed his acting skills. He was obviously good for the show though with his good looks and his lovable rogue character.

I thought Anthony Edwards who played Mark was a great actor and he got alot of great story lines that he played so well (getting beaten up, the brain tumour and the dying of course). I cried buckets when he died. So well done ER.

Carter was good and so cute when he first appeared on the show (and so young looking). I liked his character and his relationship with Dr Benton.

If I need surgery I'll have Peter B please. He was a great character who spoke his mind. It was good they showed his softer side with his son story line.

I was jeleous of Abbey when she had Carter and Luka fighting over her (sigh).

I like the congo scenes and they must have been expensive to shoot.

I liked the aids story line with Jeanie who i thought was really pretty. She played it well and was a good character.

Who didn't swoon went Luka beat up the neighbour who hit Abbey.

Last but definately not least how amazing was it that Carol was only meant to be in it for one or two episodes as a temporary character but she ended up being such a central role. I felt really stressed out though when she bought that house right next to the rail line that was falling down. Glad her and George got their happy ending.

What's your thoughts on the show. Do you agree or disagree with my comments. The show went downhill from about series 12 onwards which was a shame.

Lets have a good ole natter and feel nostalgic for the nineties and ER.

p.s. If you're younger than about 50 you might have no clue what I am talking about.

It was called ‘no s*x Thursday’ in our house when it was on originally. Also couldn’t pause the TV either so doors and phone calls went unanswered. I have the first 7 series on dvd box set (in the beginning they came with a booklet detailing every episode) and was going to buy the whole thing but never got round to it. I’ve gone back to them various times over the years and did start re-watching them on channel 4 but I stopped again when it got to carter and kem at Christmas with her expecting the baby. I didn’t like her, she brought him down. It definitely wasn’t as good later on - I liked some of the later characters but it was then more about the characters than the procedures

Carter’s addiction story was good, especially at the end where Benton flew with him to the treatment place and looked after him. Benton was such a complicated character - career minded but now and again his human side world appear - with carter and at Halloween with Corday. I didn’t like Carla at all - it was like nails on a blackboard for me which I suppose proves she was a good actress

I loved Romano. He was such a d**k but also had that human side. Real soft spot for Corday and I did feel a little sorry for him. Once he lost his arm they just didn’t know what to do with him and it got stupid

Luca started off great but then they ruined him with demons and him going off the rails, which they seemed to do with a lot of characters just for the storylines

I can’t listen to ‘over the rainbow’ without thinking of Mark Green. Those episodes were so sad and make me cry every time, especially when darter reads out the letter about him dying and then the letter flying off the board later on, showing that life goes on. Rachel was a brat but at least came good in the end

which brings me to the little snippets they put in for you to look for. Mark outside telling carter to take his time and the whole speech about getting sick if they don’t let it out, then carter saying the same thing to gallant (I think?). Then Morganstern telling mark He sets the tone as he was leaving and mark then saying the same thing to Carter. Then the first and last lines of the whole 14 series being ‘coming dr green?’ First to mark then Rachel

oh and the whole wall of names that hale (can’t spell it) showed carter when he left, that was such a nice touch.

You’ve opened a can of worms with this one 😂. Lucy left because in real life the actor had recently lost her sister (or friend?) in the ER and it was too traumatic for her. Shame because I think she would’ve evolved into a good doctor - she had the same relationship with carter that carter did with Benton. He was impatient with her because he knew she was good

I loved it in the 90s and early 2000s. A few friends and I had DVD boxettes of different seasons and used to swap.

Happy days. 😁

Oh that's really doing it in proper nineties nostalgic fashion - watching it on DVD. Well done.

greglet · 30/07/2024 07:26

I’m 39 and I loved ER in the 90s/early 00s. I was allowed to stay up late to watch the early seasons with my mum and carried on watching it till I went to university in 2003 (which must have been around season 9?). LOVED Carter and the episodes where he gets stabbed and Lucy dies are etched into my brain.

I started rewatching it on maternity leave and got up to about season 9 again (before Romano loses an arm though), so I still haven't seen the whole series. Probably ought to finish it at some point!

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 30/07/2024 07:27

I watched Vikings Valhalla recently and the actor who plays Luka Kovac plays Eric The Red there.

He's unrecognisable, I only realised when I saw the credits.

EasterlyDirections · 30/07/2024 07:27

I started watching it towards the end of the Clooney era (because my friend would never meet up with me on ER night as she was so hooked on it). I was hooked too and watched it to the end, then about 10 or 15 years ago I finally got round to watching the first seasons. There was a time when it was on permanent repeat on Sky. I think it's my all time favourite TV show, but I'm unlikely to watch again as I don't really watch TV much any more.

I nearly became a nurse because of that bloody show! Nothing wrong with being a nurse but anyone who knows me, knows that I am the least nurse-like person in the world for a whole host of reasons. Luckily my mum arranged for work experience at the local hospital and it knocked some sense into me.

Can't blame you - seeing nurse Abbey having the cute Carter and the luscious Luka fighting over her would make any woman want to be a nurse.

It's always such a disappointment when you go to your local A&E and none of the doctors look anything like these two. Sigh

ER is my favourite ever show. I'm 37 and I remember watching the later series when it was first on tv with my mum. Currently rewatching it, just started series 14! I agree with everything you said. I love it so much.

Lots of good comments. You're right the show had lots of clever little threads through it like the whole 'you set the tone' speech.

Lucy got better as a character once she calmed down (she was too hyperactive at the start for my tastes) but the killing of her and the injuring of Carter was a great storyline. Shame about her relative dying but at least she got a good dramatic memorable ending.

Oh yes when the letter from Mark flutters off the board - so poignant

I know the Doctor Greene dying story was done so well and he was so brave right up to the end. A great storyline but I hated when Mark left the show although I think he went on to do some directing.

Another vote against Carole. I'm surprised. What didn't you like about her

I just didn't, I'm not sure why I didn't like her character but like another poster above, I never really got into The Good Wife as I didn't like her in that either.

I liked most of the other female characters in ER though, especially Susan who had the unstable sister to look after Chloe I think her name was. I so wanted Susan to end up with Dr Green.

MynameisML · 30/07/2024 07:39

I still adore this show and agree with everything you say! Abby was my favourite character and due to my admiration of her, I became a nurse.

Gosh remember when you had to actually be in to watch the programme as there was no on demand or catch-up. Also some else mentioned having to wait for the adverts to go to the loo or get a cup of tea.

Goodness. Feeling very nostalgic for the nineties now.

I can tell you that about six years ago, in A&E with my dad, he was looked after by a very good looking doctor, an Army doctor, as our nearest hospital is tri services as well as civilian staff. 😀

Good for you. The nurses seem to have so much responsibility and demands on the show. They are like the wives juggling everything behind the scenes and the doctors are like the husbands getting all the credit.

Abbey had some great storylines. I liked when she helped her neighbour who was getting abused by her husband. Very dramatic when he broke in and beat her up. Then Luka getting revenge for her.

I adore ER. I rewatched it fairly recently on more 4 and felt old seeing how dated it is though. Lots of casual racism, sexism and homophobia.

I really liked Sam and the storyline with her ex, and I can't think about poor Dr Greene without wanting to cry 😭

sashh · 30/07/2024 07:56

I was working in a cardiology department. On a Thursday night it was not unknown to be called in just after ER finished by one particular cardiologist.

We used to joke about 'sexy medicine' and that he was influenced by ER.

One thing I will criticise it for is the lack of nurses' stories. It all revolved around the Drs and one nurse with the others just in the background.

me too, used to watch it with my parents, it became part of me, the assault, the helicopter, little Reese, the blowback, Chase 🥺, but I seem to remember some sex scenes that would make Greys blush 😳

I'm not remembering the show having lots of sex scenes. Are they in the later part of the show. I'm on season 8 just now. Mark has just found out his tumour is back and I'm shouting at Elizabeth. Get out of the hotel and go home. Mark needs you.

Luka always looked like he was just about to nibble something he'd fished out of his teeth. Weird mouth.

Carol was too saintly and too whiney.

I loved it though!

Agree with a pp about certain phrases and themes running through - always liked it when they did that.

I would rewatch it but it's quite long isn't it? Also the later seasons were not as good, until the final one.

Agree that Romano's helicopter tussles were a bit daft and I also remember him as being tall and gawky in Fame. Maybe part of his legs got severed by an early, pre-storyline helicopter.
