Horrid Henry is officially banned in our house for DS aged 4.6. Does anyone else stop DC's watching certain children's programmes?

Because he is just so rude and whenever DS watches it he ends up being quite rude, ie calling people "stupid" or "loser".

DS doesn't really like CBeebies - tends to like CITV or CBBC, which we feel is aimed at slightly older children.

Thankfully we only have Freeview not cable so don't have to suffer Nickledeon, Disney Channel etc.

Oh and ds2 won't be watching Barney.Hideous or Hi5!

TheSweetLittleBunny · 15/04/2008 11:06

I agree with you morethanmum. And there's another one that's called the Revenge Files of Alistair Fury, (which is not by Jacqueline WIlson). He's so rude and the (middle class) parents oscillate between indifference, laziness or hysteria.
The thing about those programmes is that you need to keep telling the DC's that this behaviour is not the norm - that that way of relating is not really how we relate in real life (not in our family anyway), but at 4.6 - he just doesn't care. And when a lot of the popular programmes are about dysfunctional, rude, naughty children (and adults) - or are full of paranoia about instant anihilation and the death of the universe as we know it - what can you do.
So there are things I ban and things I filter - so all progs about rude children are banned until he is older, and he is only allowed one or two paranoid action save the world type programmes a day.

They watch cbeebies on and off, and other than that, mostly dvds or videos. I can't see them graduating onto CBBC, tbh, although they have watched Blue Peter in that past. Too many nasty 'comedy' programmes about people being unpleasant to each other.

SueBaroo · 15/04/2008 11:39

In fact, I find it bizarre that one of the most prominent 'messages' you get from Cbeebies is how you should treat people kindly and so on, and the main messages of CBBC is often how parents are moronic twats and you can call them and other people 'losers' and worse if you feel like it.

roisin · 15/04/2008 12:10

I don't remember exactly 'banning' a programme, but at that age I would put the TV on for a particular programme for them to watch for 30 mins; and if I didn't think it suitable I wouldn't put it on.

I agree with PrettyCandles that 4 is too young for HH books or programmes. And I too hid all the HH books in our house for a while for the same reason.

OrmIrian · 15/04/2008 12:18

morethanmum - don't know about middle class but you do sound like my mum. She caught some of TB the other day and she just said 'what horrid children'!

I don't think there is anything that is actually banned here. But with an 11 yr old I'm sure my 5 yr old sees and hears things that aren't exactly age-appropriate from time to time. I'm the worst offended. I got a copy of the Blues Brothers the other days and I was all for letting the DCs watch it (one of my favourite film and the music is wonderful) until DH pointed out that the language was a bit ripe.

OrmIrian · 15/04/2008 12:19

Might just add that I hate HH. Evil child. Woosy parents. Peter is unbearable.

iloatheironing · 15/04/2008 12:31

Basil Brush cause I can't stand it....didn't like it first time round even worse second

bozza · 15/04/2008 12:32

Mine only watch specific programmes like roisin's. They are 7 and nearly 4. DS watches Match of the Day every week, and occasionally MOTD2 (but try to avoid recording this) or a live game. And very little else. He watched an episode of Ben 10 on Saturday because he was tired and asked to watch it while chilling out.

DD only really watches Peppa Pig, Roary the Racing Car, Noddy and Charlie and Lola. C and L are her favourite.

Occasionally we will put a film on.

i wish my dd1 was into kids tv more than she is, she is far to grown up. she is 4 and she is banned from watching haloween, although she is determined to, i have had to get a dvd cabinet that locks to stop her getting at my dvd's. childsplay and the omen are now becoming of interest to her too.

her fave tv prog is dr who and torchwood and she watches some supernatural's but i watch them first and make sure that they are not too scary, i.e. she wont be watching this sundays episode.

she likes hanna montana and h20 and wants to be a mermaid when she grows up! bless!! or go travelling with the dr.

iloatheironing · 15/04/2008 12:37

My dss who were about 7 and 9 at the time told my mil who was babysitting, that they were allowed to watch south park. She had no idea what it was so let them. Cue one horrified mil who couldn't believe I let her grandchildren watch such things. I don't btw....their friends told them they watched it and they saw this as an opportunity to see what they were missing

Blessed2 · 15/04/2008 12:44

I banned HH since last saturday - terrible language. I don't mind reading my ds aged 5 1/2 the books because I can adapt them as I read. Also banned Scooby Doo for many reasons. I've never let him watch Power Rangers either. I'm encouraging his interest in footy.

GetOrfMoiLand · 15/04/2008 13:02

I have banned Tracy Beaker, dd is 12 and would still watch it if I let her (odd girL)

I banned it because it was so CRAP and I wanted to slap that horrible girl.

I think the episode on HH about 'running away' was the straw that broke this camels back I don't want to give my ds ideas about running away - he's trapped in this house until he's 18 fgs

3andnomore · 16/04/2008 19:50

Power Rangers and such things are banned...because my 5 year old son is boystrous enough wihtout encouragement....

Must say, Horrid Henry doesn't botehr me to much, not that they watch it often....my Kids are Nick Jnr fan, which seems to be aimed at their agegroup, unlike Cbeebies...

oiFoiF · 16/04/2008 19:51

no I dont but I dont particually like horrid henry but ds likes it so...

barbamama · 16/04/2008 19:53

that moronic Lazy Town is so banned in my house. As is that awful thing with the judges from some shite talent show doing dreadful singing. Luckily mine prefer watching DVDs so I have ultimate control hah ahahah they don't actually realise that CBeebies is live I don't think as I only ever let hem watch one thing at a time.

barbamama · 16/04/2008 19:54

and also that hideous thing with an Irish Pig.

barbamama · 16/04/2008 19:54

you've got me started now ....

Twominutes · 16/04/2008 19:54

Tracey Beaker as dd gets very shouty and thinks that going to live in care would be great

Bramshott · 17/04/2008 22:28

Aww - I like Horrid Henry!! But DD (5) is such a goody-goody that she spends the whole time going "Henry is so naughty isn't he, he is so horrid to poor, poor Peter". Whereas I think it's fairly well set up in that the parents expect him to be horrid, constantly tell him he's horrid, and then how can he be anything else? [Bramshott wanders off into psychoanalysis of CITV]

cheesesarnie · 17/04/2008 22:31

i love horrid henry!id watch it even if dc didnt!ds saw power rangers and asked to watch it at home-after one programme he was kung fo king so it never went on again.

CeilingCat · 17/04/2008 22:37

The DCs only watch CBeebies at the moment, but I cannot abide Clifford the Big Red Amerkin Dog, so I usually switch over to deeply unsuitable music videos when that comes on.
