The other thread was getting too slow (and we were running out of space faster than the thread on a bobbin)

I like Luke and Ailsa.
Suzy should have gone weeks ago.
Pascha to win.

Brefugee · 13/07/2024 09:20

i'm hoping for Luke, Ailsa and Pascha in the final, with Pascha to win.

Those three in the final. I don't really mind which one of them wins. They all have their strengths. Suzy's work is a mess.

SoupDragon · 13/07/2024 09:38

There was no way they could keep Alex in after that pitiful made to measure.

I don't think anyone has said she deserved to stay have they? Just that they are disappointed.

Until this week, she was ahead of Luke with 1 GOTW. Looking at this chart, she was pretty much 3rd taking into account the times Suzy has been marked as "least favourite"

Shame about Alex she was my favourite. Suzy's fringe dress was a pigs ear and her transformation not much better whereas Alex dress was good and her nightwear brilliant. I thought the premise of the show was to be a good sewer which Suzy isn't!! Luke was made for this week.

If I can persuade DH away from the remote, DD(17) and I need to catch up with the last 2 episodes.

This band (Klangphonics) cropped up on my timeline this afternoon. They should have them doing a session at Sewing Bee next year:

So annoying that they kept Suzy in .

PickAChew · 13/07/2024 18:17

I think it's fashion house inspiration, next week.

2Rebecca · 13/07/2024 23:08

That sounds a lot like diva week

2Rebecca · 13/07/2024 23:10

If I had a week I could make my Nina Ricci ball dress though

I love that Drag Queens can all sew and stuff. It's kind of cute. Not sure Liz Taylor or Beyonce ever did much of their own sewing..

Well , drag queens have to sew, or know someone who does.

Men’s bodies are basically such a different shape from women’s, the shoulders are broader in proportion to the head and neck, the hips are narrower, the legs usually longer in proportion to the torso. So even disregarding the need for extra room in the front of the pelvis 😉, most men would find it difficult to fit convincingly into garments made to female dimensions.

And also, the extravagant OTT outfits are a huge part of the act for many drag queens. Even if you did happen to fit perfectly into a lovely off the peg Ted Baker frock, it wouldn't fit the bill.

Here's a few outfits from an exhibition I happened to see while visiting the Back to Backs in Birmingham: you couldn't buy them in John Lewis...or even Bond Street. Extreme examples I grant you, but you get the point.

@Madcats I LOVE that. How fabulous - agree that the Klangphonics need to open the next series!

Just caught up and also sorry to see Alex go. Perhaps she’s just not wacky enough but she’s a good sewer. I did think she missed the brief though. Suzy’s MTM was eye-catching and diva-esque but when will she show that she can actually fit something to her model, rather than dressing her in a tent?

Happy to see Pascha go well enough on this one, as I don’t think the diva theme was a strong one for her.

I agree. Alex has been in top 3 throughout all episodes while Suzy has been in bottom 3. In the last episode she was the last a and second last on 1st two challenges, while Alex did well, in the last round they both had made mistakes, so for me Suzy did bad on 2 rounds and did slightly better than Amex on 3rd whereas Alex did well on first 2 and bad on the 3rd challenge. She is the better sewer between tjosr two. I would have liked to see her go all the way to final not another tent made by Suzy.

Oh Ethel, I looked! I didn't read much but the first picture is very funny. That's a nice dollop of cheerfulness breaking in for this afternoon.

JulySheWillFlyAndGiveNoWarningToHerFlight · 15/07/2024 13:33

Yes, I do like that picture. It made me smile when I first saw it and then again now.

The facial expressions are great.

Jaxhog · 15/07/2024 13:40

Is it just me, or is there almost no fitting being done on the made to measure? It's hard to tell whether they just aren't showing us, or that too many of the finished garments are not fitted.

AnnaMagnani · 15/07/2024 17:09

There is practically no fitting going on as far as I can see.

A big play is made of filming them measuring the models but in previous seasons you had them all doing FBA, swayback and all sorts of adjustments. Now the biggest deal is if they make a jumpsuit long enough in the body.

Partly I think this reflects current ready to wear, which has gone v boxy and oversized.

But I think it also goes back to them focussing on design and drama over skill.

PickAChew · 15/07/2024 17:22

Even boxy stuff needs to fit, though, or else it falls off the shoulders awkwardly or lifts at the front or gapes where it's meant to hang parallel to the body. So many of them seem to use it as an excuse to do no fitting at all.

TheTripThatWasnt · 15/07/2024 18:45

Just seen that one of this week's challenges is inspired by Chanel. That HAS to involve some fitting, surely?!

Completely agree that the MTMs have had precious little fitting this year.

I'd hope so, but it's normally "a modern take" on it, so they'll use that as a reason for it to be boxy and unfitted. Admittedly, that would match up to the current fashion of nothing being fitted, which I also hate.

I loved the Dior new look episode a couple of years ago. The winner of that series (the newly qualified/ trainee doctor - Serena?) did a really lovely outfit.

That was a stonking episode. A great series, in fact, with both Serena and Ralph. This is a fab recound if that 40s week, though, with lots of pictures

It's Wednesday again, this week, for some reason. Probably a ploy to keep Suzy in a day longer. She can't make it to the final, surely? All this lot were better than the current final 4.

Sewing Bee 2021, Episode 9: The Pin Making Economy of Redditch

Can we just appreciate the mammoth size of these trousers? It’s 1940s week so don’t eat too many potatoes, your mother has to use them for soap, or something.
