I finished it now. I think it could have used an extra episode as I feel various storylines got wrapped up a bit too quickly. However I still enjoyed it. As a pp said it's a gripping series. I also think it has a great cast.

@IwantToRetire

Series 1 was Catholic gangsters

Series 2 Loyalist

That's part of why they were all scandalised in the pub that he was working with Tina McIntyre

Thanks so much. I am generally useless at remembering plots. The only upside is that I can rewatch a series and find it really engrossing because I remember so little.

For me, not being from Northern Ireland the added element of the continuing / historical divisions add an element to what would otherwise have been an urban police drama.

And as said up thread the police having to face people throwing petrol bombs with just shields is truely disturbing.

But why in the end I found it a bit "cheesy" is that the happy ending all round just not realistic, which is what I thought the first series did so well.

And the idea that the sister of the man (Lee?) who wanted to return the area to the old ways, should within less than 24 hours organised a rebellion against him seems just fanciful.

Can anyone explain to me why Lee's right hand man, was so willling to sacrifice himself for Lee. Was it something to do when they were in the army together.

I am glad that Happy got some sort of closure, but sort of wished we could have had more of his story. Of all the characters from series 1 I remember him as much as I do Gerry.

And unlike PP I didn't think Jen's storyline was that bad. But had forgotten how terrible her relationship was with her mother.

But did like at the end when somehow all the women acted in tandem to payback Canning(?) for his behaviour.

Although Jen's mother had been more than happy to use him when convenient.

She would be a difficult boss to have as she didn't stick to the rules as it were, but just took decisions that were pragmatic / convenient at the time. (I've just realised I dont know her name Blush )

Hard agree. Fanciful is a good word for it. Cheesy.

Because Lee saved his life in Afghanistan.

Thought it was obvious but I grew up through the troubles so it's not just a police drama to me, it was very real.

Did anyone else come out with a crush on Stevie or was it just me 🙈

JSMill · 18/04/2024 22:39

@TruthThatsHardAsSteel don't worry, you are not the only one with a crush on Stevie! However I was a bit shocked that the actor is ten years younger than me!

Oh is he not!! I never even thought about his age. He just melted my heart. I think I might watch season 1 and 2 again

Bruisername · 18/04/2024 22:52

I didn’t really need the Jen side story tbh. Felt a bit shoe horned in

the DS being a raging mysogynistic ontop of being unprofessional was a bit too neat

and agree the end was cheesy with everyone getting their happy endings

my ds comment ‘the ds is right, they busy a drugs ring and a new one gets set up - so that’s season 3 and 4’

Xtraincome · 19/04/2024 14:48

Happy and Uncle Rab got me sobbing!

Didn't mind the happy ending for this series tbh compared to S1 with losing Gerry.

I liked the completely different angle from the first. Not black and white about drugs and gangs. The social and community conflict, a man declaring himself an anti-hero, starting to brainwash his nephew, seeing it all as just another war or battle to fight.

Fancied Jonty in this series, good looking guy. Didn't notice it so much in S1 when he was a sleaze. Was hoping Cal would show up to be with Grace and make her happy 😊

Fab watch

Right... when does S3 start?.... 😆 🤣 😂

Bruisername · 19/04/2024 14:50

So are we to assume uncle rab died? Ds says yes and I think not

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 19/04/2024 16:26

I didn't think Rab died, no.

IwantToRetire · 19/04/2024 16:55

I wasn't sure myself but read this - but have no idea how they came to this conclusion:

his sister Mags ousts him from the community and seemingly blames him for the death of their uncle Rab, who went into cardiac arrest during the police stand-off.

I sort of assumed that if not dead he would be in hospital with severe burns, and it might be ongoing in series 3.

Blue Lights s2 ending explained: What happened to Lee Thompson?

The Belfast police drama will be back for season 3.

Oh so he was the guy Stevie tried to resuscitate?

I may have to watch that episode again

I wouldn't reply on me. Look how easily I get lost in plots let alone recognise faces.

Maybe who ever got caught be a petrol bomb had gone to help uncle Rab. But have to say I do not remember a scence that showed Rab having a heart attack. Yes distressed and struggling to get people to listen to him.

Bruisername · 19/04/2024 17:14

Rab was the guy on fire who stevie is doing chest compressions on

it didn’t look good but at the end in the pub the teacher policeman said ‘good job’ which I didn’t think he would without adding something about the outcome of it was a negative

Arconialiving · 21/04/2024 10:59

Watched it all & loved it. Amazing series & having grown up in Belfast with a dad who was a policeman, it all seemed very real & had me in floods of tears.

Happy is a phenomenal actor & every time he said 'daddy' it just broke me!

Gcsunnyside23 · 21/04/2024 22:15

Loved it, so glad to see a real, true and non cheesy show set here. I live in Belfast and think it's really good, love pointing out places every time I recognise somewhere

Octocat · 22/04/2024 15:18

Do you live in Sunnyside, @Gcsunnyside23 ? Grin

We enjoy the location-spotting aspect too.

lul1 · 28/04/2024 09:44

Was the older guy in the pub an uncle or a family friend?

Lee caused those riots by lying about his nephew but I thought he was trying to do good. Apart from the drugs.

I wish Jen wasn't in it. Why did she want to know what happened to Happy's family? I don't think there was some massive coverup. It's awful but that's what happened back then. They didn't deliberately choose to kill his dad and brother did they?

ClaudiaWinklepanda · 28/04/2024 14:26

There was quite literally a cover up. The RUC knew about the planned bomb attack but didn’t do anything about it to protect a source, and people died. The fact that the police knew was buried.

Gcsunnyside23 · 28/04/2024 17:11

The whole point of the story line is that it was an actual cover up. It's a very real storyline based on similar real situations where information was ignored to protect an informant. Many times the informant was the person committing the crime.

Gcsunnyside23 · 28/04/2024 17:18

The old guy was a beloved local in the community who rang the local lodge band I think. I wouldn't think Lee is the 'good' character but more it shows how he thought he was going to be the good bad guy like some sort of robin hood but in the end was just like the rest of the scumbags he was wanting to protect people from, killing people and expanding his drug business and would end up the same way so that's why everyone turned on him

Bruisername · 28/04/2024 18:03

I felt like I could have also had an answer to who actually committed the bombing instead

Something for S3 I predict.

IwantToRetire · 28/04/2024 21:20

I wish Jen wasn't in it. Why did she want to know what happened to Happy's family?

Did you watch series 1? If so you will remember how she got to know Happy and as it turned out Gerry who was a long time friend. She had initially seen Happy as a good example of if you are the police and have to take someone to hospital it could mean your whole shift is just waiting in A&E.

Being with Happy and Gerry taught her so much as (because of her family background?) she hadn't realised the long term impact on people.

This wasn't about politics. This was about giving Happy some sort of resolution and in a way to carry on what Gerry used to do which is keep an eye on him.

No doubt there are many families still living with the trauma of lost relatives etc..

His family would not have been killed if the informer had been listened to, but the politics of the time was to save the informer even if others suffered as a consequence.
