Just read that this is a new series!

The Talented Mr Ripley is one of my favourite films.

Where can I watch it?
Is it any good?
Who plays Ripley?
Is Jude Law in it? 😂

Andrew Scott. He’s excellent.

MonkeyTennis34 · 13/04/2024 10:20

Love Andrew Scott!

Will definitely try and watch this over the weekend.

Sadly no Jude Law. I think Sting's non binary child plays Freddie and is apparently v wooden but hey, nepotism. I've seen the first episode, it's in black and white and is beautifully shot and v moody.

Andrew Scott
No, sorry

ArtfullyCrumpled · 13/04/2024 10:23

It's on Netflix. I didn't realise the Freddie character was Sting's offspring! Yes wooden.

blackcherryconserve · 13/04/2024 10:26

We're half way through it and I'm sorry to say that Andrew Scott looks too old to be Ripley and that both Jude Law and Matt Damon were far better in the 1999 film imo. Also the entire series is filmed in black and white, very Hitchcockian and when viewing the Caraveggios, at least, and the sublime light of the Italian coast, it should have been in colour. I got very puzzled by Freddie as the person playing him looked like a woman. Having discovered that it is Sting's non binary progeny I now understand my confusion. This is an entertaining series but has its limitations.

mondaytosunday · 13/04/2024 11:03

There was a long thread on this. Consensus was actors all too old, Dicky didn't have much charisma and no one liked the black and white.
I enjoyed it (Netflix by the way). But having just rewatched the movie I see how attractive the Jude Law Dicky was - and their relationship made more sense.
Freddie hardly features at all, and almost feels like they cut that part back.
Details are different, the ending is different. But I'd recommend it.

WhereAreWeNow · 13/04/2024 11:04

It's beautiful and Scott is brilliant but he does look too old. The Freddie character is ruined by really atrocious casting/acting.

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 13/04/2024 12:56

I gave up after two episodes and watched the film instead.

atotalshambles · 13/04/2024 12:59

Am watching at the moment. Really enjoying it - it is quite dark and the have had to fast forward the violent scenes! Absolutely love Andrew Scott - an amazing actor. He is so creepy in this though that I don't understand why Dickie and Marge would have spent any time with him. Different to the film, but good.

MonkeyTennis34 · 13/04/2024 13:10

One of the (many) hi-lights of the film was Philip Seymour's portrayal of Freddie.

Matt Damon
Jude Law
Philip Seymour
Gwyneth Paltrow
Cate Blqnchett
The Italian coast in the sunshine

Very hard to beat but will definitely give it a try!

While admiring the stark but beautiful visuals, didn't really get into the Netflix version until episode 3 when the suspense ramps up. Now got two episodes to go and flagging a bit but I've got so far best to finish. Then I'll rewatch the Matt Damon/Jude Law one. Totally agree about casting of Freddie, totally distracts from the drama.

SabreIsMyFave · 13/04/2024 13:25

Oooooh, I saw this on Gogglebox last night! Meant to putting it on 'my list!' Putting this on it now.

Janetime · 13/04/2024 13:26

I also could take or leave till episode 3 and then started getting into it, got two left we will watch tonight.

i liked the Freddie character and ripley . It’s a different take rather than an exact match.

I also didn't like it until episode 3 as I was constantly comparing it to the film. I thought Dicky was bland and lacking in Jude Law's beauty and charisma, and I couldn't understand how he'd invite someone as obviously shifty as Tom into his life.

It improved at that point, but I still think the actors are way too old and the black and white is pretentious and distances you from the action. I disagree with you about Freddie. I can understand a different interpretation of the character, but it would help to have an actor who can actually act. And are we meant not to notice that Freddie is in fact a woman?

blackcherryconserve · 13/04/2024 19:01

MonkeyTennis34 personally the film beats this version hands down, for the acting alone. Andrew Scott can't carry the whole series imo.

blackcherryconserve · 13/04/2024 19:05

IcedPurple I thought Freddie was a woman then discovered 'he' is played by a non binary person. Too confusing.

WhatWouldYouDo33 · 13/04/2024 19:07

Where can I watch the original?

WhatWouldYouDo33 · 13/04/2024 19:07

Where can I watch the original?

If you mean the Minghella film starring Matt Damon and Jude Law, it's not really the 'original'. It was an interpretation of the 1955 novel by Patricia Highsmith, just as this series is. Nor was it the first cinema version, as there had been at least one previous film based on the novels.

As for where you can see the Minghella film, it is or was available on Netflix.

Edited

Yes, Tom is much more central to this version than he was in the film. There's barely a scene which isn't all about him. That, along with the black and white, means there's little 'escape' from the more sinister elements of the story. Whereas in the film, you had the beauty of the actors, the gorgeous blue of the sea, and the minor characters such as the ditzy society girl played by Cate Blanchett. And the occasional musical interlude!

Patricia Highsmith was a brilliant writer. Her novels are so tense.
And if you have never read Carol, or seen the movie please make a point of doing so. Is an amazing story which pushed the boundaries when it was published.

AnneShirleysNewDress · 13/04/2024 21:08

The Minghella film is glorious and utterly gorgeous. The casting was perfect. This not so much, they all lack charm. Eliot Sumner is really poor as Freddie. I was looking forward to it but was disappointed.

Mumofyellows · 13/04/2024 21:16

I have heard lots of negative reviews but gave it a go and LOVE it! It's nice to see a familiar story done slightly differently. The filming takes a bit to get used to being black and white, but it's very beautiful. I think Andrew Scott makes a great Tom, quite controversially!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 14/04/2024 22:53

Eliot Sumner is a biological woman? I was very confused by that.

Otherwise I thought it was beautifully shot but the storyline is beyond frustrating, so many red flags about Tom's bad character that Dickie was too weak to challenge.

I was also disappointed that Marge didn't work out what was going on.

I've not seen the film but will put it on my to watch list!

I also didn’t realise Elliot was non binary, I thought the actor was male, but somewhat effeminate and playing the part like that . I don’t think it matters I personally thought they played the part well. I watched quite closely as I realised there was something I couldn’t put my finger on though, so found my mind searching for it.

now knowing of course it makes sense. Fair play I think they can play both make and female roles , but are maybe not the best actor.
