This will be a real tear jerker

i watched the two previous programmes she and Derek did

this is the final year of Derek life and told in his words

Kate Garraway (https://uk.news.yahoo.com/tagged/kate-garraway/) will front a new ITV programme documenting the last year of her late husband Derek Draper’s (https://uk.news.yahoo.com/tagged/derek%20draper/) life: Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story.
The Good Morning Britain (https://uk.news.yahoo.com/tagged/good-morning-britain/) star’s husband died in January (https://uk.news.yahoo.com/derek-draper-tributes-kate-garraway-husband-covid-123921217.html)
after his battle with COVID.

She previously made two programmes about his health struggles — Finding Derek and Caring For Derek — and will now share his final chapter which will air on ITV on 26 March.

The film starts in May 2023 and looks at the final year of Draper’s life, including both sweet family moments and an insight into his health battle.

But it also looks back and reflects on his life before he contracted COVID in 2020, including his career as a political adviser, his romance with TV star Garraway — who he has two children with — and how Draper’s illness changed their relationship while they maintained their close bond.

The film also highlights the challenges faced by those living with serious illness and disability and those who care for them and will feature contributions from Draper’s carer Jake.

The programme is set to air in just a few days, close to three months after Draper died at the age of 56.

It will be on ITV at 9pm on Tuesday 26 March.
Documentary was Derek Draper’s idea
Garraway has said that she hadn’t planned to make a third documentary but that the idea came from her husband.

Obviously when we started making this documentary early last year, we had no idea the events that would unfold that ultimately took Derek from us,” she said. “And in January 2024, after he had passed, I wondered if it was right that it should ever come to air.

"But I didn’t want to let those who have given us so much support over the last four years down, and the carers paid and unpaid who in their thousands of letters to me, feel Derek’s story has given them a voice. Also, I remember so vividly that the idea of making this third documentary at all came from Derek himself.”

She went on: “At the beginning of January 2023, he’d been released from a four month spell in hospital for sepsis and we were very positive about his recovery. Derek was determined to keep on getting better and improving.

One day, we were sitting together while I was caring for him and he suddenly, from nowhere, asked, ‘Are we making another documentary?’ I said, ‘Well I hadn’t really planned to. Were you thinking that you would like to?’ And he said firmly, 'Yes'."

The presenter said she told Draper it should be his story, in his voice, explaining: "Derek got very emotional at the idea, because his words and speech were so limited and there were so many things he wanted to say about the struggle we were all having as a family and he wanted to speak up about it."

When she asked Draper what his main message was, he replied: "Never give up fighting for what you believe in and for the people you love."
“We had to find a way of allowing Derek’s voice to be heard and while having to finish it without him has been so hard, I am delighted that the film is a tribute to Derek and his incredible spirit,” she added.

No thank you. It doesn’t sit right with me. I hope she gets what she wants from it though.

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/03/2024 20:55

I will prob be 15m behind.

No. True facts and the opinions of how she is conducting herself to make money.

The facts are that she has a ton of bills to pay and she’s doing certain things to be paid. Everything else are opinions.

Presumably the people who have posted such scathing opinions won't even be watching anyway

We can only hope they leave us to it. 🤞

LadyBird1973 · 26/03/2024 21:04

I think people forget that KG and DD are people used to living in the public eye and dealing with the press in a daily basis.. It probably doesn't feel odd to them, to have cameras filming their lives - it's the business they're in.

So what might feel exploitative to more private people, doesn't feel that way to them - they are just sharing their reality, I think we have to trust that KG knew her own husband's mind better than anyone else.

And I'd think that if you have massive care bills and a tax bill, you might do whatever it takes to generate income, particularly if you need to fund expensive foreign treatment. That woman did everything humanly possible to keep her husband alive.

This probably feels like a tribute from her pov. I think it's shitty to say she's exploited her h for personal gain - if that mattered to her she wouldn't have incurred so much debt trying to find treatments for him and to give him the best possible care she could find.

Ohh will you can it! Miss Holier than thou! You were pretty scathing yourself! I didn’t even report you but your post was deleted.

I think - actually watching it - that it is very clear that they love each other a lot. He also asked to make another documentary and wanted his words and story to he heard. Where is the exploitation?

RIPMullet · 26/03/2024 21:14

Interesting that how someone earlier in the thread described Kate saying she didn’t feel loved because he couldn’t bring her tea, didn’t come across like that at all when you actually listen to what she said and how she said it, rather than the made up version to make her sound bad. I can completely get where she’s coming from in what she said.

Because people make assumptions before the programme even started
So weird

I understand it yes.
I think she was very brave saying it as well

Icantbedoingwithit · 26/03/2024 21:16

Nobody said she didn’t love him. 2 books and 3 documentaries also shows she loves money.

BigBlo · 26/03/2024 21:18

His care cost MORE than her salary, to it is quite clear how they ended up in debt. Plus bringing up the DC and managing his care and her own emotions, it’s hugely impressive that she managed to carry on working throughout this, she must have felt absolutely exhausted at every point.

Do it for charity then at this stage….. she’s already made enough. Raise awareness for charity not to line your own pockets

I’m going to ignore you now. 😊

I am also surprised at so much negativity

I always liked them as a couple

And yes she prob did the tv stuff to pay the bills of 24/7 care and huge medical bills

If we were in her place would you not do the same ?

I think I would tbh

I was really sceptical during Covid and was the first one to think she was doing to make money/sell books but I looked after them at work on their trip to Mexico and it completely changed my mind!

The sheer love she had for him it really affected me I actually shed a tear when I left them on the plane!!

Wonder how others manage it then… you know… not famous rich people.

There's nothing wrong with trying to make the money to pay her debts.

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/03/2024 21:20

Def clear they loves each other and this is what Derek wanted maybe knowing that it will help toward costs

Are you watching this? His care alone cost more than her salary, and she needed to pay for that before paying their mortgage or anything else. Where do you get the idea that she is “lining” her pockets, rather than just trying to survive and pay off their debts?!

I agree. Some people seem to want her to lose her house and have nothing before they would be happy.

Hasn't she been left with hundreds of thousands of pounds of debt for his care costs? Not sure it's a love of money or trying to keep a roof over her and her kids heads.
