Blondeshavemorefun · 22/03/2024 21:22

This will be a real tear jerker

i watched the two previous programmes she and Derek did

this is the final year of Derek life and told in his words

Kate Garraway (https://uk.news.yahoo.com/tagged/kate-garraway/) will front a new ITV programme documenting the last year of her late husband Derek Draper’s (https://uk.news.yahoo.com/tagged/derek%20draper/) life: Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story.
The Good Morning Britain (https://uk.news.yahoo.com/tagged/good-morning-britain/) star’s husband died in January (https://uk.news.yahoo.com/derek-draper-tributes-kate-garraway-husband-covid-123921217.html)
after his battle with COVID.

She previously made two programmes about his health struggles — Finding Derek and Caring For Derek — and will now share his final chapter which will air on ITV on 26 March.

The film starts in May 2023 and looks at the final year of Draper’s life, including both sweet family moments and an insight into his health battle.

But it also looks back and reflects on his life before he contracted COVID in 2020, including his career as a political adviser, his romance with TV star Garraway — who he has two children with — and how Draper’s illness changed their relationship while they maintained their close bond.

The film also highlights the challenges faced by those living with serious illness and disability and those who care for them and will feature contributions from Draper’s carer Jake.

The programme is set to air in just a few days, close to three months after Draper died at the age of 56.

It will be on ITV at 9pm on Tuesday 26 March.
Documentary was Derek Draper’s idea
Garraway has said that she hadn’t planned to make a third documentary but that the idea came from her husband.

Obviously when we started making this documentary early last year, we had no idea the events that would unfold that ultimately took Derek from us,” she said. “And in January 2024, after he had passed, I wondered if it was right that it should ever come to air.

"But I didn’t want to let those who have given us so much support over the last four years down, and the carers paid and unpaid who in their thousands of letters to me, feel Derek’s story has given them a voice. Also, I remember so vividly that the idea of making this third documentary at all came from Derek himself.”

She went on: “At the beginning of January 2023, he’d been released from a four month spell in hospital for sepsis and we were very positive about his recovery. Derek was determined to keep on getting better and improving.

One day, we were sitting together while I was caring for him and he suddenly, from nowhere, asked, ‘Are we making another documentary?’ I said, ‘Well I hadn’t really planned to. Were you thinking that you would like to?’ And he said firmly, 'Yes'."

The presenter said she told Draper it should be his story, in his voice, explaining: "Derek got very emotional at the idea, because his words and speech were so limited and there were so many things he wanted to say about the struggle we were all having as a family and he wanted to speak up about it."

When she asked Draper what his main message was, he replied: "Never give up fighting for what you believe in and for the people you love."
“We had to find a way of allowing Derek’s voice to be heard and while having to finish it without him has been so hard, I am delighted that the film is a tribute to Derek and his incredible spirit,” she added.

@Blondeshavemorefun Thank You Flowers The punchline is he got promoted to housing manager.

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/03/2024 22:05

Well I thought the programme was well done

It was sensitive but also showed the emotional side as well as the hard level of what happens

Def sad how Derek went downhill but also know that's normal
And hard for the family and carers

Absolutely no way I'd watch this. I lost friends to Covid and although her loss is sad for her and their children, it's not for entertainment.

I don’t think it is intended as entertainment. Kate is advocating for carers and people who need care. She is an intelligent woman and has fought as hard as she can to give Derek the best life she could. She must know there will be a backlash but has continued … I think she is very brave.

Surprised to read so much negativity about this, although I can understand why some are skeptical. The only thing I have to add is that Kate was left with massive bills to pay, as they suddenly lost one income and their costs increased dramatically. Maybe it's a case of 'needs must'.

I was surprised that such wealthy and apparently intelligent people didn’t seem to have critical illness cover or earnings/employment insurance in place, especially as they were both self employed.

I agree.

She now has to rebuild her life without her husband, be a mum and work whilst coping with grief. I’d feel for anyone in that situation, regardless of how much their house is apparently worth.🙄 I’m sure Kate would like to see improvements in the care system for everyone.

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/03/2024 22:14

Many people don't have critical illness

I hope they had life insurance so hopefully mortgage is paid off so a forever roof over their heads

Ans maybe some extra to help towards bills

People keep saying it's a £4million house

Yes in London prices are mad but Looks like a basic 3/4 bed semi

Not a mansion

Yes could sell but then stamp duty would be colossal for next property

Equally that's their home. Their memories

She may decide to move later

Never bothered me living in the same house where dh died - but know for many they can't deal with it and move

We know of someone who was very ill with and after covid and they didn’t pay out for it.

JenniferBooth · 26/03/2024 22:16

Ive decided to watch it on itv1+1

LadyBird1973 · 26/03/2024 22:18

I think some people are bad with money - they earn a lot and assume it will always be that way, so don't buy enough insurance. Or they spend more than they have, in the assumption they can earn it back. And tbf, no one could have predicted a situation like they found themselves in.
I think I did read that had some insurance cover but obviously his care costs were astronomical and burned through it.

boredybored · 26/03/2024 22:19

His care would have cost her about £10 k a month . I can't blame her for wanting to make some money .
She would have lost her house if it wasn't for that.

Caring for someone or even managing their situation is an absolute thankless job and unless you have done it then you will never understand

It's way worse if you have some money because no one wants to help .. I speak from bitter experience .

Notcms · 26/03/2024 22:20

Carers allowance is £76 per week.
Just under £4000 per year.
😔
I'm not sure it's 'way worse' if you have money

Yes, a home has emotional ties for people and also presumably it may be close to school for her youngest. I read something she said that made me think her kids didn’t go to private school. The house is mortgaged so who knows if there’s any equity in it. It’s not as simple as just move, and it was very difficult to move in covid times. She had the house altered to suit his needs and it would have been difficult to find a suitable house whilst he was still alive. Maybe she’ll move now. It’s her business.

Blondeshavemorefun · 24/03/2024 15:42

I hope she got his consent

His death was one of the worst (well published) tragic cases /outcome of covid

The worse?
what about the poor girl in London who committed suicide because her mental health was so bad and her parents were too afraid to break the social distancing rules!
There are many tragic deaths that have happened because of Covid! I’ve lost both parents- she just happens to be in the public eye and milked this for all it’s worth! It’s sick!

very sad for them all, but saying you can't put the heating on whilst there are close ups of diptyque candles on the mantelpiece. Hmmm.

Haha I noticed that but assumed it was a gift .
It takes a special kind of person to be able to be a carer like that and Jake seemed wonderful aswell .
I noticed the house looked very untidy , full of clutter , and I know there were other priorities but derek at times was seen mobile and all that stuff could have been hazardous .
Also where did the children figure in all this , we didn't really see what time Kate was able to give them .
In terms of highlighting carers role I have very mixed feelings , it didn't really show the hard graft of most carers done in impoverished circumstances, we saw Kate holding his hand a lot but not real physical graft so I think it missed a trick there , also she was navigating forms but what about the people who just can't navigate complicated forms. What support to they get or do they have to give up because it's too difficult and they can't articulate well what the true issues of their situation are . I felt it was an interesting family documentary but I'm not sure it really highlighted how hard it is for most people who are carers . It felt a very middle class experience.

But he had the heart attack in Mexico and was flown back to ITU in a London hospital. This was his second trip there, and the obvious cause of his death but it wasn't mentioned at all.

Funny, that.

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/03/2024 22:31

@Bugbabe1970 sorry to hear about your parents. That must have been very hard 💐

And yes I said one of the worst

Not the

There were many tragic sad deaths via covid

I have just watched this, it’s very sad. It’s a shame how the thread has turned out so negative. I can’t imagine judging someone going through something like that. I think it’s a case of just do what you think and do what you have to.

Funny, that.

Why ‘funny that’? What are you saying but not saying? It seems she thought the treatment in Mexico could help. He may have had a heart attack regardless. So what do you mean?

JenniferBooth · 26/03/2024 22:45

Jake is great.
