I loved it the first time.

I loved it even more the second time.

Lesley Manville is fantastic.
Lisa McGrillis is so brilliant as Kelly - she's got the character to a tee, I love her!

Anyone else want to join in my love fest?!?

I think in series 3 you learn more about one Dave. I think he was a larger than life presence so no one really knew how to "just be"
Once he was gone.

Jason says something about becoming a father his child can talk to instead of being really funny all the time

HeartshapedFox · 04/03/2024 23:11

I discovered Mum last year and binge watched it, it’s so, so good! I liked the friendship between Kelly and Derek that you started to see in series 2. Lovely stuff

Conniethecatapillar · 05/03/2024 02:42

Derek reminds me of my own brother and I'm not sure what to make of that 😅

The bit where Reg and Pauline are discussing the baby has me in stitches, it just doesn't miss a beat does it in any episode. Truly magnificent.

Schoolrefusa · 05/03/2024 02:54

Help, I think I'm going to have to watch it a third time after realising it's on iPlayer again . It's glorious .
I adore Pauline and all of them really. The acting really is excellent and Michael so expressive yet in such a gentle way .
I find Jason a bit annoying

Schoolrefusa · 05/03/2024 02:57

I hadn't picked up on David's character much and what he was like so going to listen out for that more next time. It's just brilliant .

I really liked Mum but I love Here We Go more.

Oh, I’d disagree!

Watched all of Here We Go a couple of weeks ago. It does attempt depth - but only at a superficial level. And it doesn’t come close to Mum in terms of dialogue or .. artistry. When I first saw Mum I felt I’d never seen anything quite like it before, and I haven’t since. I’d say I watched HWG purely because I wanted something easy and undemanding; without prompting I would probably never think of it again. Whereas, as so many people have attested - Mum bears repeated viewing because it’s just replete with shocking and unexpected wit and insight and tragedy.

And snacks. I’ve never seen people eat So Many snack foods.

I too may have to watch it again over the next few days - instead of catching up on Oscar nominated films.

BlossomBlossomBlossom · 05/03/2024 05:37

What did you feel made Here We Go the better of the two, @rooftopbird?

MrsJamin · 05/03/2024 08:05

Here we go was very watchable but it was a bit more of a chaotic farce at times, eg kidnapping a random dog. I did really like it but Mum is on another level.
I think so many women can relate to Cathy in that you end up soaking up a lot of other people's poor behaviour and drama by just getting on with things and being calm in the storm. Also we are all socialised to be peacemakers, hospitable to everyone, especially family, despite how awfully they treat us. For some it takes us a lifetime of putting up with other people's shit to say "actually, no more, you can fuck off!"

I loved this , hilarious I think I need to re watch it ,that & Motherland

In all honesty it's been a while since I watched Mum, I saw it when it first aired, I guess HWG humour is very me, plus I literally adore Jim Howick (dream husband!) and Alison Steadman and Katherine Parkinson are sublime, I only know Tom Badsen who writes it from AfterLife but the whole gang of brit writers, Simon Farnaby very comforting as telly to keep me company, I find it tough watching telly on my own as the depression kicks in when DS is with his dad but it's one of the few shows I've fallen in love with and watch repeatedly.

Almahart · 07/03/2024 17:45

I couldn't love Mum any more than I do. Reg and Maureen are such brilliant characters, it took a while for it to dawn on me that they were grieving the death of their only child, but when it did - oof.

I still laugh to myself when I remember everyone commenting on Michael's new shirt with the lines from the packaging. Dunno why it tickles me so much, it's just so well observed.

Jim Howick is my dream husband too, I absolutely love him so thanks for the tip!

@Almahart

Brilliant, the Jim Howick appreciation society!

Brilliant, the Jim Howick appreciation society!

I've been searching for my people! Even my friends who are massive Ghosts fans don't seem to love him like I do

The scene where reg dances to "girls just wanna have fun" and then glances at Maureen. It actually broke my heart, you can see so
Many emotions pass his face.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 08/03/2024 07:39

I’m sure I’ve seen it three times (good lockdown tv viewing).

It’s very well written and acted. The actors have their acting down to a T. We all know a Mum, a Kelly and a Jason.

CantFindTheBeat · 08/03/2024 08:15

I do love Here We Go too - it's brilliant to watch.

I think HWG is deliberately more comedic though. It's designed to be lighter, in my opinion.

Love the cast in that - and Jim Howick just wouldn't be Jim Howick without an arrow connection in there somewhere!!!

@Almahart
I’d never truly seen that before re Maureen and Reg but now I can - it’s powerful.
Reg talking about his son with such tenderness.
the scene in the garden where Cathy tries to talk to Maureen, it’s beautifully done - Maureen sits absolutely motionless for well over a minute.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 08/03/2024 08:56

I loved that programme too. So beautifully observed.

stickybear · 08/03/2024 23:49

I've started a rewatch this evening thanks to this thread. It's so touching, and yet so funny. Pauline is hilarious, up there with Amanda from Motherland as one of the great comic creations of recent years. 'Jacobs Creek, on Valentine's Day? Are you completely out of your mind?' Grin
