There is NO WAY that Precious Ramotswe would snog the husband of a client!

I'm disappointed.

Really, is no one else watching this?

It was really nice. I think Mengelle did a really great job, he is a sad loss.

I thought it was very unrealistic or, at least, not at all as I imagined from the books. The essential innocence seemed to have been lost. i am surprised AMS was happy with the adaptation. And surely M Ramotswe was older?

janeite · 23/03/2008 22:49

I really liked it overall; but yes, the snogging was a bit far-fetched!

Beautifully shot, lovely music and superb landscapes. I thought it was really well done.

JackieNo · 23/03/2008 22:49

It was nice, but in the same way that the books are nice - it's kind of feelgood tv - Last of the Summer Wine in Botswana (OK - not elderly people, but you know what I mean). I enjoyed it, but could take or leave watching any more of it.

zog · 23/03/2008 22:50

Really? I thought it was FAB! And v authentic IMO.

FriedGreenTomatoes · 23/03/2008 22:50

yes, DH and I were just discussing how M Ramotswe is portrayed younger than we imagined. We quite enjoyed it. But then my friend worked on the film so I am biased

barbamama · 23/03/2008 22:52

And was there a camp hairdresser in the books?

RTKangaEGGMummy · 23/03/2008 22:56

I haven't read the book but I loved it

Lucycat · 23/03/2008 22:59

I loved it - then again i loved the book too and i don't usually like TV adaptations.

Can't wait for more of them. Precious was exactly how I'd pictured her and she does kiss Kremiln in the book.....part of her learning curve.

Grace was spot on too.

Fab

I AM surprised! I really didn't like it, but then I am in a bad mood today ..

Eve · 23/03/2008 23:02

I liked it, very gentle, but in my mind she was older and the secretary wasn't as pretty as she is on the TV.

In the book she snogged him.

zog · 23/03/2008 23:06

abibatousmum · 23/03/2008 23:09

I thought the dress was very unrealistic- speaking as someone who spends a lot of time in Africa (although West Africa and I hate people who speak about Africa as if it is one country too..). Still, no one I know in Gambia would wear a headscarf tied like that, or one that clashed so badly with their dress and I don't believe anyone in Botswana would either!

janeite · 23/03/2008 23:14

Happy to be proved wrong about the kiss - it's a VERY long time since I read it. I thought the casting was pretty good actually - yes, Precious is probably a bit too young but I loved Mr Makatoni (sp?) and I loved the "stiffness" of the secretary.

TheDuchyEggOfNorksBride · 23/03/2008 23:27

I haven't read them and I enjoyed watching. DH has read quite a few of them and also commented on the 'interesting new hairdresser character'. He liked the adaptation too and didn't mind the differences.

He said say that Grace was supposed to have terrible skin and only one dress.

Jill Scott is an amazing singer. I've seen her in concert! Absolutely amazing woman. I could listen to her albums for hours

dingdong05 · 23/03/2008 23:52

I liked it!
Like the book it has a golden feel to it.
Out of interest, how old did everyone see Precious as?

colacubes · 23/03/2008 23:52

Thought it was great, I agree expected her to be older! but was a pretty idealistic life, I may move. Such a shame about A.M, but a credit to him.

I thought it was great! I've spent a little time in two African countries (east and west) and it took me back to my time in Uganda - especially the schoolchildren singing near the end.

I expected Precious to be only about 5 years older - bearing in mind that Precious was a young divorcee and that Africans typically marry younger than Europeans. Thought Jill Scott was absolutely gorgeous (and hate her for it) and was wonderful as Precious.

Loved David Ayelowo as Kremlin, too - I was writhing off the sofa when he tried to kiss her!

There was an irritating woman reviewing the film on Radio 4's Saturday Review, who said she thought it was 'patronising' that the people were portrayed as so happy and innocent. What does she want from Africa, for goodness' sake? All doom, bloodshed and witchcraft? I must admit I switched off after hearing her whingeing so perhaps she redeemed herself later on. But she sounded like she'd never set foot on African soil - otherwise she might well have encountered many people like those portrayed in the film - I know I have.

suedonim · 24/03/2008 00:50

My impression of No1 etc is that if that's a true representation of Botswana it's a zillion times nicer there than Nigeria! I was looking out for the wall-to-wall garbage, the cars/vans all bashed to b*ggery and the bodies lying in the streets. But I suspect it's the African equivalent of 'Larkrise'. And I enjoyed it, it has to be said.

DaisySteiner · 24/03/2008 01:14

Am I the only one who thought Charlie Kgotso was a bit of all right?

Vinegar · 24/03/2008 08:55

I loved it, thought it was really enjoyable. I haven't read the book, so can't really compare.

JackieNo · 24/03/2008 09:30

Daisysteiner - me too.
