Our Flag Means Death. It's utterly brilliant and I am obsessed!

I'm sure I found a thread on this series a while ago, but now season 2 is out I've looked back and I can't find anything apart from the renewal petition.

For anyone who hasn't come across it yet, I would thoroughly recommend. It starts off as a sort of workplace comedy set on a pirate ship, sort of in the style of Ghosts, and with a similar fanbase to Good Omens. When the 2nd lead character arrives at the end of episode 3, it starts to change and it only hit me two thirds of the way through season 1 that I was actually watching a very different sort of show to the one I thought I had started watching.

From that point it's phenomenal. The attention to detail is superb. Both leads are clearly neuro diverse, from abusive backgrounds and damaged because of these. They both want what they think the other one has. It's about them discovering themselves, accepting themselves for who they really are, and healing. There is comedy, but also heartbreak and despair. The show handles these so sensitively and accurately, down to minute details, and Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby deserve every award under the sun for their work here.

I don't think I've ever obsessed about a show as much as this one. I've tried to make this not too spoilery in case some of you want to watch it, but really I just want someone to talk to about it! I've already watched it countless times and the more I rewatch the more I appreciate it. I said I was obsessed and I really am!

The show has sadly been cancelled, despite its popularity, and the producers are currently trying to see if it will be picked up by another network. I have read that they are keeping an eye on the iPlayer numbers as part of this, so I also wanted to shamelessly plug it here 😁

If any of you haven't seen it and fancy giving it a try, it grows into itself in the first season and you really need to give it at least 4 episodes (episode 4 is where the main story really starts). Its not a show I would have thought to watch myself (DD wanted me to watch it with her) but I'm so glad I have.

I don't really know what I want from this thread really. I want more people to find it, but I also want to just talk about it and obviously can't do that without more spoilers than I've already given. Help me out people!

This is a good one .. long, but, they have edited some of the music out so you can hear more of the chat. They have also edited out the music in the mermaid scene .. you really hear Ed struggling underwater

@Phineyj I have the artistic talent of a goldfish so unless the adult books are based on a stickman then I'll stick to writing the stories and someone else can illustrate them 😁

Phineyj · 29/04/2024 21:07

I have had a happy thought. Rest of the family are off to Wembley on Sunday.

I can binge WWDITS!

Jealous! I've watched 3 times through, the rewatches very quickly after my first watch if series 2. The only thing that's stopping me watching all over again now is not wanting my husband to thinks I've completely lost the plot 😬
Instead I just watch alllll the YouTube edits!

MrsJellybee · 30/04/2024 06:17

Apologies if you’re all up to speed with this, but there are POST CREDIT SCENES for every episode of series 2! I only discovered by accident last night.

All brilliant. S2.4 is particularly hilarious and insightful. S2.5 is going to be my new hyperfixation.

I had this thought not 20 mins ago! A tiny and sympathetic insight into what a harmful obsession might be like. Or perhaps an affair…. All the excitement but without the deceit or hurt. (Well perhaps the occasional small fib about why I have suddenly joined Mumsnet and find it so fascinating)

Just been paid and had a fanciful thought about the pirate pass at Basingstoke Comic Con - but no tickets on sale!!! Must have sold out I guess ☹️

Oh no! What a shame 😢, particularly if you'd decided to go. I was still hoping for that lottery win, but I guess it's too late. I was still daydreaming about being able to meet Rhys, too. I just checked and you can still get individual photos with all 4 of them, if that's of interest.

You have time for a second obsession? Respect! (said in a Wee John voice). I'm struggling to hide my one obsession, here 🤣

I have watched Good Omens and love the book, so if you do post on that thread I will join you over there, but DD was most disappointed in me when I didn't really have a great deal to say about S2. I am intending to watch it again soon though. It's just hard to fit it in at the moment with OFMD, plus I'm still slowly working my way through Buffy/Angel. I suppose those shows are my secondary obsession, but tbh, they don't come close to OFMD in the living and breathing it stakes.

OP posts:
Chrysanthemum5 · 30/04/2024 21:58

Well I've not read the good omens books but I enjoyed the series. It was recommended on YouTube because of my OFMD watching 🤣

I just found these recently too and I love the one for S2.5! I watched it a few times yesterday so today was muttering to myself ‘Here I am concentrating. Stop singing. Be quiet. I'm concentrating! Look at me concentrating, yes I'm concentrating, woo hoo, work is happening right now!' (although obviously I wasn't really concentrating much as mostly all I'm thinking about these days is OMFD).

Ed’s mix of extreme distractibility/struggling to be still and impulsiveness/love of shiny new things/enthusiasms is one of the things I find most endearing about him. I’m so glad they put that post-credit scene in as I think it really adds context to the fisherman whim – he wants to find again that dopamine rush he got from catching the fish and feeling everything was new and exciting for a moment, plus Stede telling him the fish is beautiful.

@lizziesaurusx Ed has the same internal monologue I do when attempting yoga 🤣

I love ‘fishing is happening!’ and his little leg kick towards Fang.

I thought the end of S2.3 was gorgeous as well. There is definitely movement above in those sunlit waters…

The addiction is real. My husband now knows I have lost the plot. We went out for the day yesterday and I told him it was the first day I have not watched an episode of OFMD since I first started watching a couple of months or so ago. He was incredulous, he really doesn't understand this sort of obsession at all.

MrsBruin · 01/05/2024 09:04

We understand it though @CarlaH! Yesterday I was having a little glance around the Auxiliary Wardrobe and I noticed for the first time that when Ed is looking at the summer linen, the shelf above glows his open-and-accessible purple, just for a few moments. So clever. Anyone else found this ‘easy to miss’ series. The captions are inclined to fly past swiftly;

Honestly the amount of attention to detail in this series is off the chart. I heard an interview with David Jenkins a while ago (sorry can't remember where) when he said that sometimes they were just so tired and wondering whether all the thought they were putting into little details was really worth it. Then the series came out, the fans noticed all these things and they realised that it really had been.

Now I must do some ironing but afterwards will reward myself with a coffee and a look at your link.

Oh @lizziesaurusx that's such a beautiful way of putting it. Far more poetic than my "yes - that's Ed's ADHD showing again"!

I have wondered if those extra scenes were ones they wanted to include in the show, but had to be cut due to the time restrictions. But they still wanted to show us what they made. I'm so glad they did. And that one is my favourite too :)

Yes the addiction certainly is real. I don't watch an episode every day, but some days I may watch 2 or 3. And I'm still looking at this thread, fan fiction, Tumblr, YouTube edits, and generally just thinking or dreaming about them! DH is not at all bothered that I keep watching - it gives him free time to watch/play his own stuff, but he may be a little concerned if he knew just how much they have taken over my thoughts.

YES! Love it ♥️

lizziesaurusx · 01/05/2024 11:01

@TriceratopsRocks @MrsJellybee I love it because it shows what’s actually happening inside his head. So not just how Ed's might look to others when he’s struggling to sit still and be quiet (humming, hand on his chin, looking round at Fang because he’s bored) but how hard he has to try to make being quiet happen and that he’s really working at it, even when it looks like he isn’t. Hence ‘fishing is happening!’ and trying to get Fang’s attention – because he’s so pleased with himself that he’s able to do the thing that’s expected of him and that now someone will know he tried hard even though it was difficult.

I really wish we’d got an Ed/Stede post-credit scene for episode 8 though. Ed at the inn reception desk, Stede choosing beautiful colour schemes for the interiors (including the towels). And I wish they’d found space for ‘I just got back together with my boyfriend’ too.

Chrysanthemum5 · 01/05/2024 11:03

@lizziesaurusx yes I would have liked the boyfriend line to have been included. And having weaned myself off watching YouTube clips endlessly I'm now back on them!

Yes PLEASE! Treasure hunts led by Stede himself, I'd hope. He was at his most endearing in that episode - I love 'right, that's the spirit' and straightening up his explorer jacket ready for the final push.
