One Day - is Emma meant to be like this?

Have never read the book. Saw the film years ago but don't remember loads about it 😳.

Am on ep 3 of the Netflix show and Emma is just so bloody miserable and sour? She's vile to Dexter and I don't get why someone as charismatic as him would bother with her relentless negativity and moaning. I seem to remember Anne Hathaway's Emma having more about her? The connection between her Emma and Jim Sturgess's Dexter was much more believable?

Not sure I can be arsed persevering tbh.

Agree it definitely warms up and Emma really comes into her own. Loved loved loved it. So sad 😭

StarTwirl · 16/02/2024 11:09

Emma is complete misery with zero charisma and the actress is utterly wrong for the part

I read the book years ago and don't remember it being this disconnected and irritating

Dexter plays his part brilliantly and is very charismatic

The ending is sad yes although I'm not sure I have the patience to watch all the episodes to the end

No, she isn’t, and this is one reason of several why Ambika was horribly miscast. She brings no charm or a sense of fun to her role. The pairing isn’t at all believable and I couldn’t get invested in her character and the central relationship.

Yes to all of this

I really liked Emma in the book

It's a shame because she was really good in 'This is Going to Hurt'. I do think her performance was very similar in both dramas. She played a nerdy, serious person. She condescended quite a bit to Dexter rather than teased him.
Leo Woodall was great and I think he's definitely good looking enough!

I loved the book except for the ending thought the film was not bad but am really nervous of watching the series. I need to know it's worth it to put myself through the ending again!

I'm the same, so I think I'll give it a swerve, given the mixed reviews.

I also loved The Time Traveller's Wife book and film. Started watching the (Netflix?) series, and hated it. Gave up mid first episode. Another reason I decided not to bother with One Day.

TinaYouFatLard · 16/02/2024 11:57

The first few episodes are really hard to get through because there is zero chemistry between D and E. You just don’t believe for a minute that Dexter would spend his final big blast graduation night with a sour, miserable girl who somehow captivates him from across the room. If he’d noticed her having a massive laugh with her mates while not giving a shit about the toffs and maybe being less impressed with him it might have worked.

StarTwirl · 16/02/2024 12:12

He's so wonderful

She's so crap

Redlarge · 16/02/2024 12:19

She's certainly not everyones cup of tea. But she is unapologetically her and true to herself.
I actually think that's what the attraction was for dex. He was used to people fawning over him and being in false social circles. He trusted her opinion as he knew it was true and genuine even if dilivered dryly and blunt. I think she grounded him and he also found it amusing.

StarTwirl · 16/02/2024 12:24

In the book yes but on the screen it's just not coming across well

usernother · 16/02/2024 12:25

I thought this Emma was terribly cast. She seemed very boring and miserable, Dexter would not have kept returning to her every year. Anne Hathaway was much better and I don't even like Anne Hathaway.

I know right

PuppyMonkey · 16/02/2024 12:31

I’m on about episode 10 I think and I’ve yet to warm to Emma tbh. I also read and loved the book and I don’t think this adaptation has nailed it in the slightest. They have zero chemistry together and I have not been able to suspend my disbelief that these two would remain lifelong soulmates.

TotalAbsenceOfImperialRaiment · 16/02/2024 12:38

Dexter never looks older than 19 at any point, which makes the whole thing unfeasible.

LizzieSiddal · 16/02/2024 12:44

She acts pissed off with him because he’s an obnoxious, privileged twat. 😂 and she’s a northern, no nonsense woman. I love the Netflix series and the book.

There are many similarities between the book and Dh and I, met young in 1988, he’s southern and middle class, I’m northern and WC. He went into the media, I was a teacher etc etc. Im very speak as you find, not a game player, he finds that very, very refreshing. We’re still together 35 years later.

orangeblosssom · 16/02/2024 13:16

Loved the series; it follows the book closely.
Ambika plays Emma exactly how she is meant to be.
The film was quite disappointing and forgettable. Anne Hathaway's accent was all over the place.

hby9628 · 16/02/2024 13:20

I didn't love Emma at first but she does warm up

I really enjoyed the series. I loved the relationship between Sylvie and Emma after Emma got together with Dex and the way Sylvie stood by Dex at the end was beautiful. Lots of complex emotions throughout the series. It was a good watch.

LilacpointMummy · 16/02/2024 13:24

I just adored it - started it last night and watched it all the way through until 2am!

I thought both the leads were great and their relationship made sense to me. She was his touchstone and anchor so not surprising that he didn't cope without her.

I unapologetically sobbed my heart out, even though I knew what was going to happen 😭

I can’t remember much about the movie

Will see if I agree on the series, haven’t watched yet

ChristmasTreeMagic · 16/02/2024 13:49

It's no competition for normal people for me. On paper it had the makings of an emotionally wrenching experience but it missed the mark by a mile for me.

Despite the many traumas I wasn't even close tears. I just didn't believe them as characters. I found it a bit cheesy..

ChristmasTreeMagic · 16/02/2024 13:51

I can't remember if I've seen the film version or not. I must take a look to see if it's any better.

I didn't hate the series I just didn't connect with it on an emotional level

westisbest1982 · 16/02/2024 13:58

The film version is on Film Four.

Dexter looks like my 6 year old son! I think it's his little teeth- looks like he still has his milk teeth.
Sorry if I'm spoiling Dexter for you all 😂

Theonlylonely · 16/02/2024 15:40

Brilliant series

Loved the casting of Emma. Much better and more believable than Anne Hathaway. Ambika looks and sounds / acts like a real person rather than a Hollywood star.

It fits with the narrative of the book- plain Jane meets hot toff - opposites attract and all that (then Emma turns into a very beautiful lady herself!)

No, it doesn’t because I’m pretty sure she wasn’t described in the book as being plain.
