Anyone fancy a watch thread? Loved the book by David Nicholls, loved the film, but it’s never really gained a strong following for some reason? The series stars Ambika Mod (This is going to hurt) as Emma and Leo Woodall (The white Lotus) as Dexter.

No Dex and Slyvia definitely don’t get back together in the book- she makes a joke about it in the TV series. They know they’re not good together

Agree re: Tim’s performance as Dex’s dad. Marvellous acting and he made me cry.

I loved it so much I want to watch it again. It’s just so believable and relatable. I hardly ever watch anything twice. It really touched me.

By far the worst couple was Emma's best friend and her husband.
Total cringe every scene. Unless in the book he was supposed to be deadly dull, quiet, no personality and not good looking?

I haven't read the book, but for those who have, is it ever implied that Dexter and Sylvia get back together?

Not sure if I felt they were implying that in the series! I really didn't like them as a couple!

I'm pretty sure Emma dies in the book before they ever get together

EverlastingStar · 26/02/2024 14:58

Oh you're talking about our Sylvie sorry

But as far as I remember all Emma and Dec never got together as a couple in the book

It's so long since I read it I could be completely wrong

Emma's Tilly is actually a smallish character in the book and they're far less close in print, on screen they amalgamated various scenes with various different friends into one character which made it easier to follow. Tilly's husband didn't feature at all iirc

Emma and Dex definitely got together near the end of the book!

Haha, wait what 😂 They never got together in the book? Emma and Dex? The two main characters? I'm confused 🙈

Floofydawg · 26/02/2024 20:15

@blacksocks33 of course they did. I re-read it last week but knew they got together before the re-read.

pqoei · 26/02/2024 20:16

I just loved this. Made me feel so much.

Absolutely loved the casting.

Theoldwoman · 26/02/2024 23:19

Watched, loved and will watch again!

Absolutely great viewing.

Dulra · 27/02/2024 15:03

Binged this over the weekend and it's still with me. I absolutely loved it so beautiful from start to finish agree there were a couple of episodes that were a bit slow but it was all important to build the story. I also loved it for the nostalgia I'm slightly younger went to uni from 94 to 98. Grew up in Ireland as well but music, fashion nightlife all similar.

I had read the book years ago but had completely forgotten how it ended and as I watched I started to remember. I got myself pretty worked up about it by the time it happened due to something similar happening to someone very close a couple of years ago so the trauma of the experience came back. Will have to watch the last couple of episodes again when I'm less fragile. I loved both Emma and Dex thought they were perfect and believable

sharingzoe · 28/02/2024 13:43

Leo is beautiful. He's not perfect looking which makes him so hot!

BlueBox81 · 28/02/2024 14:40

Loved the book, liked the film and LOVED this series. I thought they had incredible chemistry and Emma became more and more beautiful as the series went on. Dex just off the scale gorgeous all the way through. I want to watch it again but not sure I can put myself through it. That scene when he is sitting on the floor of his new flat imaginging talking to her but he's really on his own just killed me. Then at the end when she says I'm not a footnote I'm going to be the story of your life and the kissing montage. So much water came out of my eyes 😭

Canyoucheckonme · 29/02/2024 02:42

@BlueBox81 are you me? Completely agree with everything you wrote!

BlueBox81 · 29/02/2024 16:59

@Canyoucheckonme glad to have been able to summarise your feelings for you 😃

BritneyBookClubPresident · 29/02/2024 22:28

Haven't read the book or watched the film but I'm loving the series!

I think Emma & Dexter are both fantastic in it (I'm episode 12) . Both have very likeable qualities and each show huge vulnerability in the role

blacksocks33 · 29/02/2024 23:01

I've just watched it for the second time. I could easily watch again, mainly because I'm INLOVE with Dexter 😍🥰
Isn't Leo such a wonderful actor? The emotional scenes in the last episodes are absolutely outstanding!

Resisting the urge to re watch - I'll give it a couple weeks and in the meantime pretend that Emma never got on that bike 😂

I watched all the episodes apart from the last one last night. It seems pretty similar to the film. The characters do grow on you over the series.

DD 15 didn't like it though which is a shame as I thought she would enjoy it. She said it was boring and that she didn't want to watch any more of it after about 3 episodes.

"That scene" wasn't as shocking as the film, IMO.

If I’m honest I don’t think a 15 year old is going to ‘get it’. You need a bit of life experience, be a bit fucked up from previous relationships, had loss to really understand it.

monkey42 · 01/03/2024 13:41

Yes I agree the overwhelm is the mix of nostalgia for that time period, plus resonating for the dodgy relationships etc. my 20 yo son loved it but said he’d see it thru different eyes aged 30. Things like going to a wedding alone, being friend zoned etc etc. so week done. Dex being the physical embodiment of all former crushes rolled into one merely helps it along, though let’s face it would not have been a good choose as your life partner…!

2024Melanie · 01/03/2024 19:21

Just finished watching this (not seen the film/read the book) cried my bloody eyes out! Loved it x

EachandEveryone · 10/02/2024 20:30

I’m loving the music although the timing is way off for some of the tracks. RIP it up by Orange Juice and This is the Day was exactly when I was 17 and having my best times. I’m living the nostalgia

Yes, the Suede track "The Wild Ones" a great track was much later in real life

dapsnotplimsolls · 01/03/2024 23:47

Bloody hell. I was going to have an early night but decided to watch the last 4 episodes. I hadn't read the book or seen the film so wasn't expecting what happened. I wish I'd gone to bed now!

MrsLargeEmbodied · 02/03/2024 08:09

i didnt cry
at the point i suddenly remembered the film
however i had also seen her on Graham Norton so was interested in her eyelids! which took away a lot of emotion for me, she sleeps with her eyes open.

Elodie9 · 02/03/2024 14:20

I loved this. It moved me way more than reading the book did , although the book was very good.
This doesn't happen very often as I nearly always have preferred books to the film or tv adaptation.
Quite blown away by the performances and the sound track was fabulous.
(The posh twins did grate ever so slightly. )
I think there was such a depth to it and was really surprised at how many of my much older friends loved it too. Poignant.

2Rebecca · 02/03/2024 21:20

On Ep 1 and she is awful.
