Anyone else watched this, it's left me with so many questions.. What do others think?

I wish I'd never watched this tbh. I assumed because Anna featured it was going to transpire that Derrick DID have some capacity, but there can be no doubt whatsoever of just how severely intellectually disabled he is. The knowledge of what she did to him is horrific. Anna is up there with the worst, it's terrifying that she's not locked up. How do we know she hasn't did this to other non verbal men, or wouldn't again???
Her Mother was awful too.

I think that although she did groom him,his mother and his brother disliked even the possibility he had some ability to communicate.i felt they enjoyed him being dependent on them.the brother used some quite racist terms during the documentary.we are aware quite physically disabled people can have intimate relationships ect.as a midwife i once was present at a delivery were the girl was significantly disabled.i cannot condone a relationship based on grooming but i feel people just based the verdict on normal against disabled
My sister once worked at a facility for disabled kids and young adults who mastabated or attempted sex regularly.why should Derrick have not felt sexual desire???

The mother and brother were actually eager for him to communicate that's how they were groomed, wasn't it the brother who first contacted Anna. The mother knew he wasn't able to live independently, so I doubt it was a case of enjoying that he was dependant on her, she was being realistic in his abilities. Even if Derrick felt sexual desire he simply couldn't consent to what happened, she raped him. And the only racist person was Anna with her White savior complex. She wanted to tick the black and the dissability box for her career, the lady is a narcissist who will never admit to doing wrong, she put the blame on him by accusing him of seducing her. If she was a black woman she wouldn't be getting out after 2 years.

I agree.

I just watched this and wow, so many questions!

As PPs mentioned, why didn't nobody think to test the FC by simply asking Derrick to "say" something that he'd been told in Anna's absence? I get that his family wanted to believe in his abilities but they could see that this was beyond the bounds of credibility.

I found it so shocking when Anna was saying how Derrick was "the most important person in her life", lady, you have kids! What about them?!

Can't believe she only served two years for such an appalling abuse of power.

I just watched this. I agree - wouldn't the study support/essay support lady have been called as a witness?!
But then, if it were true, why would Derrick not show his intelligence to the psychologist with the pictures etc
Both sides are very compelling but no one seems to have tried another person to facilitate the communication - someone unbiased.
I need to Google and find out more.

When his brother and mother tried, they got nothing. Anna said they needed to practise more.

It's so clearly a load of rubbish, at least in Derrick's case.

His family did try with him, but assumed they weren't supporting him correctly.

I can't believe she's out! On presumably some weird loophole/plea bargain too.

I wonder if she almost fetishised disability? When she spoke about playing at being blind etc as a child I thought that was not out of the realms of normality, especially given her mothers job - but in light of what happened with Derrick I wonder if there was more to it all.

She absolutely did fetishise disability.

My first thought was that perhaps she didn't get enough attention from her mother, who gave all her attention to disabled people.

As a parent to an adult DD with CP but also as a person who's supported vulnerable disabled/elderly folk it's quite common for clients to develop a 'crush' on their carers... Of course we keep things professional and wouldn't dream of leading the client to think we were anything else.
It was VERY wrong if Anne to act on Dereks crush ( if indeed that was true)
The idea of disabled people having consensual sex with someone else still seems to be a topic that many folks still find it hard to accept and although such as my DD have very physical limitations their hopes and wants and desires are the same as the next persons ( as should be) but I think Dereks family found that hard to deal with that he'd have desires in any shape or form. It's so hard to know with non-verbal people just how much capacity they have for understanding esp if they can't sign/communicate. One thing that would have left an impression on folks from this documentary is that abusers really do come in all guises.

He had a mental capacity of a 6-12 month old. Of course he didn't have a crush on her

SpikeGilesSandwich · 29/06/2024 09:11

@DallasCC , I wasn't criticising the family at all, I know they tried and my own DC is disabled (though not to that extent) so I know how you hang on to any hope. I just thought, before it got to college classes, they'd have been so excited to finally hear "his thoughts" that they might have asked him questions and Anna to help him answer.
Eg. John - Derrick, what did you like best about the zoo yesterday?
Derrick Anna - I liked the penguins.
John - Erm, we didn't actually go to the zoo yesterday Anna... Confused

Yeah I agree with you.

I wish the documentary was longer, there's a lot of missing information.

Strange, because documentaries these days are normally too long!

It's absolutely mind boggling that this woman was having a relationship with herself. All that typing back and forth was her talking to herself.

The fact that she took him to a room and was typing things out as if he was asking them "take your clothes off" and "I want to touch your breasts" and all this nonsense. And then she sits on camera seemingly believing this was all from him. She took him through an entire college course with this charade. I couldn't help laughing when they questioned the poor course lecturer. She sounded absolutely baffled. "She said... he said... she... he, I mean she..."

It sealed the deal for me that she didn't get upset at any point like Derrick's mother and brother did. If the love of my life, my one soul mate, was taken from me and locked in a silent world on his own with no way to communicate, I'd be utterly distraught. She didn't even well up or catch her breath.

She's insane.

BugBugTheTornado · 30/06/2024 15:04

If the supposed need for the facilitator in FC is just to support the elbow, surely much of the grey area could be cleared up with a moveable elbow support (not a human one)!

This whole case is fucking madness.

I watched it last night. I found it really disturbing. For obvious reasons and the way this woman presents herself. She is so plausible and you can almost come round to what she's saying as she appears so convincing. Towards the end of the programme you see snippets of the predator she really is in her smirks and air of arrogance. But sat down being interviewed= Oscar worthy. It blows my mind though that unlike most creeps, she didn't try to keep her darkness under wraps. She wanted the family to know, and wanted a full blown, out in the open relationship with Derek. Wtf. It's played on my mind since I watched it.

Just watched this and I agree her facial expressions by the time of sentencing were interesting. I just googled and the lesser charge she accepted in a plea deal was "third degree aggravated criminal sexual contact" 🤷‍♀️

Sorry for bumping i have just watched this my thoughts as the parent of a severly disabled non verbal 15 year old
I find it hard to beleive that Derrick went from very basic communication ie slapping the fridge when he was hungry to being able ro read and use a key pad in a relativley short period of time unbeleivable
Derrick was still in Diapers/ nappies i get this but we managed to get my severley disabled child out of nappies by 9/10 im not judging im just thinking he was even more impaired than my own child who is very impaired and could no way consent to a sexual relationship
