Anyone else sick of Victoria Coren Michell slagging off Roald Dahl on ONLY CONNECT?

Just that - anytime a question has anything to do with Roald Dahl Victoria is doing her best to put the boot in (it has happened at least 4 times now). I think if she dislikes him so much she should not have any questions which are to do with Dahl. I am surprised she is allowed to do this TBH.

(realised I misspelt Mitchell but can't edit it!)

She’s not a cancel-er, or arguing for his books to be changed (which I would have a problem with). She just quotes him now and again so far as I can see.

TheMarzipanDildo · 29/01/2024 11:53

Willmafrockfit · 29/01/2024 10:54

would you excuse alexander armstrong the same opinions?
or richard osman, michael mcintyre on the wheel?
clive myrie?

Those programs have different vibes to Only Connect.

Flamme · 29/01/2024 11:54

She often bullies the contestants into agreeing with her views.

No, she absolutely doesn't. She may express her views in passing, she doesn't open up a discussion about them and demand agreement. Apart from anything else, the format of the show doesn't allow for it.

obviously if they were also jewish, that goes without saying really. are you saying she should be forgiven because she is jewish

‘Forgiven’!?

I understand her point entirely. I don't think he's the only person she's highlighted, over the years.

But why is she so enraptured with Michael Portillo?
<attempt at lightening the mood>

Must be the pink trousers.

LadyBird1973 · 29/01/2024 11:59

The thing is RD is dead - nothing we say or do is going to affect him at this point. I'm more concerned with people celebrating and supporting the nasty fuckers who are in the here and now!
Anyone who applauds Roman Polanski for example, when he continues to evade justice, is a twat and for me their opinions on others tend to carry less weight as a result of their support for him. So if, as a pp said, VCM supports him, I'd think she was doing the very thing that RD did, which is to prioritise some people over others.

No, she doesn't have discussions. She is more of the "we all agree this, don't we. <hard stare>" vibe.
The "don't we" is not a question, it's an instruction.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 29/01/2024 12:12

Disclaimer: I don't know what she's said or the context.

I have to admit, I don't really understand the 'calling out' of people long-dead for their outdated prejudice. They're dead Confused

Are there no living anti-Semites that could actually be addressed?

(Have to say though, I'm appalled to hear she is a Polanski-apologist).

shreknjumps · 29/01/2024 12:16

"All a bit incestuous!"

How on earth is unrelated people getting married incestuous?

As for Alexander Armstrong being David or Victoria's BIL that's just a load of bollocks too @Willmafrockfit He would need to have married one of their siblings for that to be the case 🤷🏽‍♀️

asrarpolar · 29/01/2024 12:18

Victoria Coren Mitchell is a very intelligent woman. Very intelligent women are often criticised for what very intelligent men also say.

Willmafrockfit · 29/01/2024 12:18

@shreknjumps
there is marriage,

sensationalsally · 29/01/2024 12:25

He was racist and sexist. He didn't like children at all and that comes over very clearly in the books. The subtext in many of his books is psychologically disturbing. A nasty man all round, who invented the character of the Child-Catcher and inserted it into the previously harmless story of Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang. Fortunately/unfortunately, he wrote well and was prolific, so no real way of escaping his work, you just have to hope that a responsible adult will help child readers interrogate it.

Fink · 29/01/2024 12:31

I dislike a lot of what VCM says on Only Connect (although I've liked her on other things). The scripted 'joke' comment at the end of the episode always seem so false and unfunny, for example. But I don't have a problem with her calling out antisemitism.

What I find disturbing is that people still think that the majority of men who fought for the Allies in WW2 were doing it to protect Jews, which seems to be the implication of bringing up Dahl's service record in this context. Look at any decent history of the period: how Jewish people were perceived in British society; what messages the government were putting out to encourage the war effort; diaries of troops ... Britain, in general, wasn't in WW2 from a disinterested sense of fairness, to prevent genocide, to save the innocent, or any other high-minded ideological motives.

pointless information for you
What relation is Alexander Armstrong to Victoria Coren Mitchell?
Brother-in-law
Brother-in-law of David Mitchell, Victoria Coren Mitchell and Giles Coren. His wife, Hannah Bronwen Snow is the sister of Giles Coren's wife, Esther Walker.

phew

Edited

No, Alexander Armstrong and Giles Coren are in-laws, not AA and VCM

Yes, she really should SHUT UP and behave 😒😒

I think VCM is fine!
I'm not so sure about that. I get a Mean Girls vibe from her. It's "if you want to be in my gang - in with the kool kids - then this is what you will think." She often bullies the contestants into agreeing with her views.

I agree with her on Dahl but disagree on other subjects and I get a bit fed up with her using a quiz show to platform her proselytizing.

You think VCM is one of the cool kids?!! 😳

BlastedPimples · 29/01/2024 12:44

My granny knew RD. She said he was a deeply unpleasant character.

I recently read a collection of ghost stories picked by him and in the introduction, he expresses his amazement that during his research he found women writers of the genre to be quite good. Dick thing to say.

It seemed that way, a woman overstepping by making a very brief comment.
But it'd be easier to understand what you meant if you used punctuation, as I'm baffled as to what this reply actually means 🤷🏼‍♀️

All a bit incestuous!

You think it incestuous to have two people on different BBC television shows who are 'related' by one being the brother's wife's sister's husband of the other?! I talk to my SIL's sister's husband when we meet up at family parties. I wouldn't say we were related. We're not even related by marriage.
