We watched this three part series and it was unbelievable. Has anyone else seen it? I’d love to know the answers to a couple of questions that haven’t been answered. It’s well worth watching; we just binged it.

I watched it and loved it. What an incredible couple. I cannot believe the police faced no action and the main guy got a commendation the following year! Well, I can believe it but I'm outraged!

Umanresources · 21/01/2024 02:14

I found it strange that the FBI agent seemed to be involved and how did the kidnapper know the name of the ex girlfriend? Something seems to be off still.

I hated it. Awful, sensational production of an horrific crime. Sometimes I just don’t get the Americans.

Rollergirl11 · 21/01/2024 12:28

Watching now. Just about to watch the third episode! They seem to have decided that it’s a real life “Gone Girl” and that’s it! So many things that don’t make sense though. Why would they rape her so she wouldn’t go to the police? And why have they contacted her press! And initially they said it was meant to be the exe girlfriend. Is that ever brought up again? Maybe those questions will be answered in the last episode!

WhisperGold · 21/01/2024 12:36

I thought the rape was the whole point. All the rest was just smoke and mirrors. He knew names of victims as he was also a peeping tom (also not investigated by Vallejo police).

That was my take too. He is just a rapist, but uses his military training, presumably to get more of a kick from the control. He’s a pathetic fantasist.

Amdone123 · 21/01/2024 15:38

Exactly what @WhisperGold said - it was all smoke and mirrors.
I loved it. Thought it started slowly but overall, loved it.

doubleshotcappuccino · 21/01/2024 15:40

Thought it was brilliant and a story well told .. brave brave couple
Xx

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 21/01/2024 15:55

There were two points. One was the rape and other was police incompetence.

HairyQueenofSnots · 21/01/2024 16:20

Watching this now.

It's clear to me that the rapes were what he wanted to do and the shit about it being collateral was either part of the power kick for him, or was a way for him to excuse it in his own head. Like he 'had' to do it.

WhisperGold · 21/01/2024 17:27

By the whole point I meant from perpetrator's pov, not the whole pont of the doc.
I've also got a theory that he didn't have accomplices, they were just part of him making out he was a good guy. My accomplices say I have to film us having sex.
Aye, right.

Wintom · 21/01/2024 18:11

There did not seem to be any detective work, just jumping to conclusions. If she had not been found (eg Muller murdered her and disposed of her near the lake), Aaron would have surely gone down for murder. Not the policing (or lack of policing) you expect in a 1st world country.

Newtoniannechanics · 21/01/2024 19:07

The fact they had his phone on airplane mode is shocking.

Inkanta · 21/01/2024 19:51

Really unbelievable documentary and the twists and turns that I wasn't expecting.

Terrribletwos · 21/01/2024 19:56

I couldn't understand why when the kidnapped girl was released she was carrying so many bags? Seen on the video footage at her father's address.

Rollergirl11 · 21/01/2024 20:12

There was no explanation for why Muller sent photos of the “gun” or emailed the reporter to prove she wasn’t lying! He was obviously completely insane wasn’t he?

Yep the fact that they could have traced the phone calls to her location if they hadn’t put his phone on airplane mode was unbelievable.

I just don’t understand why Muller went to the risk of home invasion and kidnap if it was all about the rape. Especially given that there were other people in the house. Like how does he know that Aaron might have been able to overpower him?

Umanresources · 21/01/2024 20:21

I find it strange that the police are actually allowed to lie to the 'suspects', telling Aaron that he had failed the lie detector test, when he hadn't. It was just incredible how much the police got away with things. Thank goodness for Misty! I don't think the compensation was enough for what that poor couple went through. The abuse they received on Social media and in the press was appalling.

I think he was annoyed that the police didn't believe it actually happened. A lot of rapists and murderers are proud of their 'work' and it's the reason why they do things like contact the press or the police afterwards. They want to prove how smart they are, how they've fooled the police etc. Usually turns out to be their undoing as well.

I've seen this on other shows. Have you watched the innocence files (also on Netflix)? It's a really common, unethical tactic to secure a confession. Along with a lot of other sketchy tactics. It's an eye opening series!

Ignore my previous statement (although the innocence files is also good!) but the series I mentioned is actually called The Confession Tapes. I blame insomnia 😂

Jesus, that poor couple, especially the woman. I cried at the end and I'm not usually bothered by TV shows. The couple were incredible, as was the policewoman who pursued her lead.

Unbelievable that the police have had no consequence from their behaviour, but at least this program has shone a light on it. I did think that it was hinting that the lead detective had something to do with the kidnapping in that it was meant to be his ex that was taken, and he did his best to cover it all up.

It wasn't the detectives ex that the kidnappers said it was 'meant for'.

It was the Aaron(the boyfriend)'s ex.

She was also the ex of the detective, I think.

Umanresources · 22/01/2024 09:10

When Aaron said that the kidnappers were wearing wetsuits, I think that must have been the black latex blow up doll they found in the trunk of the car.

The FBI guy was an ex of the ex. Surely he should have declared a conflict of interest. I wonder if there have been any sort of repercussions for the police since the film came out. I would have been mortified if it had been me.

I hope Denise and Aaron have a long and happy life together with their family. I admit I cried at the end too, especially when they met up with Misty, the police officer.

I have seen other documentaries where the police lie but not the Confession Tapes. I'll keep a look out for this. My daughter and I vary our viewing with true life crimes/ cosy murders, some reality housewives/sailing; and cookery/dance/pottery/quiz shows. Always something to watch 😂

Terrible ordeal.,,,, I was so pleased they stayed together through it.

I did feel that there was a lot that couldn’t be said for legal reasons ie the fbi officer….
