MsLatté’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama addicts #45): Where we are *still* waiting on Lee Min Ho’s astronaut OBGYN to arrive and ponder whether 2024 will be kdrama’s breakout year

boatyardblues · 20/01/2024 22:26

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4956077-mslattes-daebak-cybercafe-kdrama-addicts-44-in-which-a-surprise-feast-of-corking-contract-marriage-dramas-is-undercut-by-an-imminent-bts-content-famine-as-jung-kook-rm-v-and-jimin-enlist?page=1 here. Our list is cumulative so includes previous threads’ recommendations. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We often resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

@polkettle I've just watched last episode of CtK and really enjoying it. I didn't think that Crown Prince was the Dowager Queens grandson though, he's the son of the previous King, who is the Kings half brother I thought?

polkettle · 24/02/2024 20:24

Well that would make MUCH more sense Thecat - thanks! I'm so bad at getting to grips with all the wispy beard relationships in sageuk

boatyardblues · 24/02/2024 21:02

I am thoroughly enjoying all the twists and turns in CtK. It’s delivering in a way that other currently airing dramas are not. <side eyes Doctor Slump> Interesting to hear about the male writer. I agree the women are underdrawn.

boatyardblues · 24/02/2024 21:05

Are the King (JJS) and the dowager queen related? I’m struggling a bit with all the bloodlines too.

OP posts:
polkettle · 24/02/2024 21:12

That one I am sure of - she's his mum.

boatyardblues · 24/02/2024 21:22

😄 I really should have picked up on this, but she’s so horrible to him I thought she had to be related through marriage (eg stepmother) not his actual mother.

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 24/02/2024 21:26

I’m still slightly surprised by how much power the dowager queens wield in sageuk. Women had such low status in Korean society and no legal standing whatsoever until around 1850 that I wonder if this is modern retconning with a side order of the sexist MIL as root of all evil trope.

I saw a clip from CTK on Instagram and was laughing at whoever said it was like Bob from Blackadder!

I thoroughly researched the spreadsheet to find my next series and saw that Crash Landing on You had a ridiculously high score so am watching it - it's so good!

boatyardblues · 24/02/2024 22:14

The spreadsheet is good for that, especially if there are >5 scorers.

I especially like it when people leave comments - very useful! 😁

polkettle · 25/02/2024 08:34

I'm enjoying Dr Slump but seeing a lot of people on Twitter commenting on the amount of alcohol being consumed by two people with mental health issues and on quite serious medication which seems a valid concern. Be interesting to see if that ever gets addressed.

polkettle · 25/02/2024 08:36

(also delighted to spot that the restaurant where she had thank you meal with Bad Sunbae in latest episode was dining room of hotel we stayed in in Hongdae 💪)

MigsandTiggs · 25/02/2024 09:20

I'm sharing this article as a help to understanding those death/hospital scenarios in dramas. The Korean's different attitude to death was not one that was even on my radar, just that they revered a long life

MigsandTiggs · 25/02/2024 09:36

Re the power of the Dowager Queen in CtK. Their standing, and therefore power, was based on rank rather than sex, so it is an anomaly in an essentially patriarchal society.

" In several cases throughout the Joseon Dynasty, the Queen Dowager took the role of the acting monarch in the name of the king when the king was too young to rule. One example was the Queen Dowager Insoo, who ruled together with Grand Royal Queen Dowager Jeonghee in the name of King Seonjong."

boatyardblues · 25/02/2024 11:12

Thanks Migs. The hierarchy trumping sex makes sense, because they are big on hierarchy.

I had the same thought about the alcohol consumption Pol...I wonder if this a Korean thing, with their relationship with alcohol in general. Boaty do you know if there is A Korea Deconstructed episode on alcohol? I think it would be an interesting topic for one if not.

I am really enjoying Dr Slump though, it has the feel of an older K dramas when hand holding is swoonworthy 😍

I haven’t come across one yet. I reckon he’d be receptive to doing one if it was suggested.

I think we should give this episode a go first. The first 18 mins are on Korean life and drinking culture. Hats off to Bart for the title of his latest project - just the kind of title the Filthy Noonas can appreciate. 👏 David’s email is included.

From the podcast website. Links at the end of the description.

Bart van Genugten is a Dutchman with a passion for people, history, stories, and 분위기 (atmosphere). His recent project, Welcome to my Dong, looks to explore all of Seoul's 467 dongs (neighborhoods) and it has proved incredibly successful online, with millions of views, countless stories, and a host of well wishers. Bart is keeping history alive amidst a rapidly changing urban culture and it is no surprise that many of his greatest fans are Koreans themselves.

During his journey, Bart is also discovering himself. Coming to terms with mental health, online identity, his Dutch family, and his place in Korean society. He is also a published author, cowriting a book (직항은 없다) with his wife, 김휘아, describing his experiences in Pyongyang with his father.

The too brightly lit set in ep 14 of CtK is getting on my nerves (King’s private palace with ersatz lily pond). Turn the lights down a smidge & everything would be grand. It looks floodlit at the mo.

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 25/02/2024 15:55

The palace interrogators look like extras from the Willy Wonka film (CtK). It’s the uniforms, especially their point hats. The checked frock coats though? Not far off a chaebol’s suit - LJS’s W: Two Worlds wardrobe in particular.

No spoilers but somewhat sceptical of both efficiency and risk assessment of delivery method in final scene of today's CtK

I listened to the first half of the pod above with Bart talking about his Dong(s). Gotta say, David and Bart sound like they’d be great fun down the pub. The alcohol bit yielded a couple of insights on the culture but nothing useful from the Doctor Slump online chatter angle.
