Downton Abbey, is it worth it?

Downton Abbey passed me by completely, and I've noticed that it is now on Netflix!

Is it worth it? And has it stood up to being a few years old now, or does it seem dated.

Obviously, I can try it, and probably will, but just wondered what the general consensus was! I know it was super popular at the time.

Thoughts very welcome Grin

Of course it's dated. It starts off in 1912 😁

viques · 10/01/2024 22:27

I watched an episode again recently and thought it had aged badly, seemed very wooden. Apart from the scenes with Maggie Smith in, which were killers!

LizzieSiddal · 10/01/2024 22:29

Yes Maggie Smith is brilliant and so is Carson, his disapproval at the changing times is just as funny as Violet (are we allowed first name termsShock).

So worth it that I bought the dvd boxset.I can rewatch whenever I like.

I was late to the party too - only watched it last year. Loved it (apart from all the Bates doom and gloom). You will not be disappointed!!

Mathsbabe · 10/01/2024 22:56

I watched in the first lockdown. Hated it. Those kind of people did not care about their servants and I disliked the sugar coating.

Perfectlystill · 10/01/2024 23:00

Am I the only person in the world that thinks it's predictable, trite bollocks?

Femme2804 · 10/01/2024 23:05

I like season 2. Season 2 its a bit boring. I’m just finished season 2 and i dont know should i continue or not,

Lesina · 10/01/2024 23:07

I also really love Maggie Smith Grin

She’s magnificent and a great double act with Penelope Wilton

@EwokladyIt’s amazing (as is Poldark)
my favourites

I am on season 5 of Poldark and was getting worried how to replace it. Thank you. Which is better the Crown or Downton Abbey?

cariadlet · 10/01/2024 23:14

I didn't bother with it when it first came out but binged on Netflix later.

I used it as something mindless to half watch in the evening while I was working on my laptop. Entertaining but nothing amazing.

I was more interested in the stories of the Downstairs lot than the stories of the Upstairs lot and I did sometimes get fed up with the deference to aristocracy and the sugar coating of how hard domestic service really was.

Julian Fellowes, is a Tory peer and his politics is reflected in his writing.

Neither, they're just different

Watch both ☺️

I watched Gosford Park on Netflix over Christmas which was also written by Julian Fellowes and you can totally see where he got all his ideas for Downton from! Maggie Smith plays virtually the same character!

BanjoMango · 12/01/2024 01:36

It's worth it to watch it! It's not normally my cup of tea and my nan used to rave about it and my family would joke about it with her as it seemed silly. One night after she passed we said we would give it a try as we were talking about her and we got hooked!

Lianna077 · 12/01/2024 02:22

I resisted it for a long time OP but then I finally gave in and watched the whole lot at once. SO glad I did! Was completely hooked and have watched it again and again since.

I've watched it 5 times 😳 not the sort of thing I usually watch at all but it's sooooo good!!!

I'm gonna start it again actually 🤣

mateysmum · 12/01/2024 11:44

Shout out for Penelope Wilton too. Her sparring with Maggie Smith is pure gold.
