Downton Abbey, is it worth it?

Downton Abbey passed me by completely, and I've noticed that it is now on Netflix!

Is it worth it? And has it stood up to being a few years old now, or does it seem dated.

Obviously, I can try it, and probably will, but just wondered what the general consensus was! I know it was super popular at the time.

Thoughts very welcome Grin

Yes, it’s very good

Longlazyday · 10/01/2024 21:56

Yep. My guilty pleasure.

thelengthspeoplegoto · 10/01/2024 21:57

I like it. I like all their poshness!

theduchessofspork · 10/01/2024 21:58

I think it was always dated

But it’s fun, although series two is a bit mental

SisterMichaelsHabit · 10/01/2024 21:59

The ending was a bit rushed (nowhere near as bad as some other shows though) but otherwise it was quite good. It did get a bit soap opera-y in the last couple of seasons though, I don't know if they had just run out of ideas by then. And TW there's quite a brutal rape scene in one of the later seasons which seemed completely out of keeping with the rest of the series.

thenightsky · 10/01/2024 22:00

Its fabulous! I can't get enough of it. Its being repeated in the afternoons on ITV I think.

Fleetheart · 10/01/2024 22:00

yes it’s worth it

abbs1 · 10/01/2024 22:00

Yes! We just finished binge watching all the series and 2 films. Its sooo good!

Ewoklady · 10/01/2024 22:00

It’s amazing (as is Poldark)
my favourites

Oh thank you!

I wasn't expecting so many replies so quickly, I guess it's a resounding yes, then! Hopefully it will become a guilty pleasure of mine as well.

Is that the character Nigel Harman played? If so, they showed it this afternoon.

greencatz · 10/01/2024 22:04

I think it's an imitation of Upstairs Downstairs, but the rest of the family loved it

Shoppingfiend · 10/01/2024 22:06

Worth it for the fashions alone.

DowntonCrabby · 10/01/2024 22:07

Yes!

ManchesterBea · 10/01/2024 22:09

I also really love Maggie Smith Grin

Yes, very good.

FrostieBoabby · 10/01/2024 22:18

I'm totally jealous you haven't already watched it and have that pleasure still to come. It's great and, as it starts at the turn of 20th century, it was always old and will never age 😀

Mollyplop999 · 10/01/2024 22:18

Maggie Smith is absolutely sterling in DA!

MissBattleaxe · 10/01/2024 22:19

I was late to Downton too. I only started watching last year and it quickly became my favourite ever series. I'm now rewatching it. It's perfect comfort telly apart from the Nellie Melba episode where Anna gets attacked.

AllIsWellish · 10/01/2024 22:20

I 9nly watched it for the first time last year and really enjoyed it

TokyoSushi · 10/01/2024 22:22

Ah it's lovely (and quite dark in places) a definite yes!

AnneShirleysNewDress · 10/01/2024 22:23

I love it. I only watched it for the first time a few years ago and have watched it many times since, There are a few storylines which are a hard watch but it's worth it. Maggie Smith is perfect as Violet and I love her friendship with Isobel.

Radiatorvalves · 10/01/2024 22:25

My 19 yo son is binge watching it. Wish I had the time!

LizzieSiddal · 10/01/2024 22:25

I began watching it just before Xmas as I was ill and lounging about on the sofa for a bit.
Im now absolutely hooked, and dh keeps watching it too (though he pretends he’s not interested 😂)

MissBattleaxe · 10/01/2024 22:25

Absolutely agree with @AnneShirleysNewDress . Violet/ Maggie Smith has some killer one liners.
