Mr Bates vs The Post Office is a hard-hitting ITV1 drama starring Toby Jones, Monica Dolan and Julie Hesmondhalgh among others.

The series details one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in British legal history, where thousands of Post Office sub postmasters and postmistresses were wrongly accused of theft, fraud and false accounting due to a defective IT system.

Mr Bates vs The Post Office follows Alan Bates (Toby Jones), a sub postmaster who decided to fight back against a scandalous miscarriage of justice.

He was one of thousands of sub postmasters and postmistresses who between 2000 and 2013 were falsely accused of theft due to financial discrepancies thrown up by the flawed Horizon computerised accounting system.

More than 700 were prosecuted and several went to prison while others lost their homes and life savings trying to pay back the money the Post Office claimed was missing.

Many were unfairly ostracised from their communities, who believed they were criminals.

In 2009 Alan Bates decided to form the Justice For Subpostmasters Alliance (https://www.jfsa.org.uk/), uniting thousands of his colleagues to
fight to clear their names.

I think why this scandal has resonated so deeply with the public is because all of us now have some interactions with public IT systems like Horizon from health to tax to benefits and there by the grace of god go all of us. I noticed Paula Vennells became the chair of Imperial hospitals NHS trust in 2019 and also held a position in the governments cabinet. These people seem to go from one institution to another and their modus operandi is: inaction, turn a blind eye, cover up then move onto elsewhere before the blame can be put on them, like an elaborate game of pass the parcel (just don’t be left holding the parcel) no wonder we have public scandal one after another where ‘lessons will be learned’ being all encompassing the get out phrase

Wow.
My post was a link to a petition to help the post office workers.
Hopefully MNHQ will reinstate it.

My understanding is what you need to do is start a thread on the petitions board https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/petitions_noticeboard then link to that post on this thread.

I think the intention is to keep all petitions in one place.

Thank you@Sisterpita

I've started a thread on the Petitions Board.

I see someone else has posted a different petition on THIS thread though.

Weird.

Sisterpita · 05/01/2024 23:02

@JenniferBooth that is good news.

I was musing today if it met the threshold for fraud.

JenniferBooth · 05/01/2024 23:05

And perjury

God I wasn't expecting that scene with the break in in the post office

Yes I found that quite upsetting. I’m a massive wuss though when it comes to violent scenes and I HATE anything where hands are hurt (I nearly passed out watching Casino)

purpleme12 · 05/01/2024 23:50

So they tried to get the victim of the burglary for not taking precautions for the burglary

I think it's clear the burglary would have happened precautions or not

purpleme12 · 05/01/2024 23:58

Oh my god Martin

purpleme12 · 06/01/2024 00:06

Didn't realise that she was a priest at the same time as her job at the post office. Assumed she was a priest after that job

Just when you think it couldn't get worse:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-66594627
The PO have been paying bonuses to managers for working on the scandal inquiry. The current boss returned some of his and then eventually all of it - £50K. No word from PO if others paid to do work on the enquiry will return anything they got for doing their job.

Holy sh*t

purpleme12 · 06/01/2024 00:14

So the emails they gave were for the wrong year and no legal files given!

purpleme12 · 06/01/2024 00:16

Oh my god so they bribed Paula

whiteboardking · 06/01/2024 00:22

Re robbery. I worked for years in leisure & retail where robbery was a constant risk as some nights there would be £20 - 50k in safes. We never disciplined the mgrs or made them pay back unless we had evidence that it was staged. All outsets had cctv

purpleme12 · 06/01/2024 00:24

And now she's got cancer 🙁

purpleme12 · 06/01/2024 00:27

150 people applied to the mediation scheme

purpleme12 · 06/01/2024 02:17

Wow 8 years since the first meeting. It went on for so long
And 555 of them now!

purpleme12 · 06/01/2024 02:22

Oh fucks sake now someone else has fucking cancer

Rummikub · 06/01/2024 02:36

Oh my god so they bribed Paula

I think I missed this bit.

Watched the real story today. They picked the cast really well. The Sikh postmistress just looked so broken. It was heartbreaking to see her.

She's in the doc as well I think, talking about the after effects of the ECT treatment she had. Which she hadof course as a result of the depression brought on by the Post Office evil mind games.
