MsLatté’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama addicts #44): In which a surprise feast of corking contract marriage dramas 🙌 is undercut by an imminent BTS content famine as Jung Kook, RM, V and Jimin enlist 😭

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4894818-mslattes-daebak-cybercafe-kdrama-addicts-42-where-we-marvel-over-the-singularity-of-taecyeons-ears-while-waiting-for-lee-min-ho-to-show-up-in-his-space-scrubs?page=1here.
Our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

When we resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

Based on this I was wondering why I never watched bride of haebek. Looked it up and remembered why - somewhat irrationally I cannot abide Nam Joo-Hyuk. Think all my annoyance at Start Up has settled on him.

Heresy! What’s wrong with you woman?

Honestly, different horses for different courses. I can’t bear Lee Jung Suk. I’m kind of relieved he’s not had as many high profile dramas since military service.

I love Romance is a Bonus Book so much as a show, but you cannot show me a more disappointing on screen kisser than LJS.

TheLoupGarou · 20/01/2024 22:10

Hard core agree! I liked LJS in pinocchio and while you were sleeping but when he's kissing he always looks like his heart isn't in it 🤣.

Is he still dating IU? Hopefully he's a bit more enthusiastic with her....

TheLoupGarou · 20/01/2024 22:13

Re Nam Joo-hyuk, i really liked him in Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo so that gave him some leeway in other things ....

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 20/01/2024 22:28

LJS is a shite kisser in dramas and a Grade A feathery-stroker. Hard pass.

Just popping back in to say I'm still in two minds about My Demon. I gave it 7.5 in the end because I can't really recommend it - too much filler and rather uneven - but strangely I kind of enjoyed it, even so.

💯 couldn't agree more with this statement 😂

Welcome @PunksVersusBrats 👋🏻

I'm tempted by your BL J dramas TheLoup ,👀

PunksVersusBrats · 21/01/2024 08:38

DH and I really enjoyed Bride of Habaek @AmVa (definitely re-watch time) and it was during that one that I realised my emotionally constipated spouse has a very big soft spot for other people's implausible romantic shenanigans, if not his own 🤨

PunksVersusBrats · 21/01/2024 08:43

Completely agree with @Cobol about My Demon, not one I'd particularly recommend, although I enjoyed God's performance.

Thanks for the link @boatyardblues and a belated thank you also to the posters who did the oppa calendars 😁

LJS is totally a man who would stop to hang up his designer cardigan properly before tumbling you into bed.

As we have thread to fill, I'm back to grumble some more about the lost opportunity that was the final third of TMTYLM. I mean it didn't commit any worse crimes than most KDs but it COULD have been so much more if they'd chosen to explore what a deeper relationship meant for both of them and them growing in understanding and tackling obstacles together rather than being parted by misunderstandings after heart fluttering first half. Also 2FL was a really interesting and nuanced character to start with and on her own journey, but then turned into obsessed stalker misery person who couldnt grow. Harrumph. Show me a grown up relationship being navigated properly please. There's enough drama potential in that.

I can’t disagree with much of that Pol. It was under-developed but had potential for so much more. However, I do think the narrative around resolving long-standing misunderstandings and finding peace/resolution was more successfully navigated. The FL’s relationship with Jo Han frustrated me the most. How could she be so oblivious to one of her closest and dearest friend’s feelings? Also, his lack of courage annoyed me too. Ah well. I still loved the quiet energy, warmth and pacing.

Absolutely. Also he'd do his full skincare routine and floss his teeth. I mean there is probably something to be said for a man like that irl, but in fantasy land, give me Mr Gu and his mountain of Soju bottles....

PunksVersusBrats · 21/01/2024 12:29

Agreed @TheLoupGarou. I'd also forgive Mr Gu all the soju bottles in the world if he'd whip me up some new kitchen units at cost price!
