MsLatté’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama addicts #44): In which a surprise feast of corking contract marriage dramas 🙌 is undercut by an imminent BTS content famine as Jung Kook, RM, V and Jimin enlist 😭

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4894818-mslattes-daebak-cybercafe-kdrama-addicts-42-where-we-marvel-over-the-singularity-of-taecyeons-ears-while-waiting-for-lee-min-ho-to-show-up-in-his-space-scrubs?page=1here.
Our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

When we resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

Can someone explain the spreadsheet to me?

One of our previous regulars set up a googledoc spreadsheet so we could score the year’s dramas. It helps other posters see what’s been well scored when they’re looking at what to watch next. It flushes out the love/hate/meh dramas too, as they show up with scattered scores. Over time you get a sense of other posters who share your tastes so their scores can be helpful. The top scorers of the year are in the OP. I’ll DM you the link.

I'm on my 6th series (I abandoned one after 2 episodes cause I hated it so strictly speaking 7th).

Currently watching Welcome to Samdal-Ri. Love it.

Cobol · 20/01/2024 12:13

With one episode to go I'm still not sure how I'm going to score My Demon. I've enjoyed it more than others here but it's been missing something.....it's a bit like a poor man's Goblin/Tale of the Nine Tailed so I think what it's probably missing is Lee Dong Wook! 😁

Yes I think you are right. I commented after the first couple of episodes that Song Kang was missing some of the gravitas needed for an ancient all powerful being that we saw in TOTNT and Goblin.

My scores are up to date - haven't done Samdal-ri or Demon yet as who knows what could happen in the last episode. They could pull a heartbeat in one of them which would drastically reduce my score.

TheLoupGarou · 20/01/2024 12:21

I've quite enjoyed it too Cobol - I think it had a really good start but suffered from a saggy middle part and the characters are all a bit one dimensional somehow? I think i said in an earlier post that I've enjoyed My Man Is Cupid more, and its a v similar formula. Can't put my finger on why.

TheLoupGarou · 20/01/2024 12:23

OH MY GOD! If anything else pulls a Heartbeat I'm halving my score on principle. I was SO MAD (still not over it 🤣)

TheLoupGarou · 20/01/2024 12:27

I can take a non-HEA/ambiguous ending ONLY if it makes sense for the story and doesn't make you feel like you totally wasted your time watching it.

I could accept the Heartbeat ending IF it had been set up better and all the other loose ends tied up. Aargh! I need to stop thinking about it.

AmVa · 20/01/2024 12:33

I don't mind a non-HEA if I haven't been sold the show as a bloody romcom!!!

I've really only found the last couple of episodes of My Demon a big draggy - and decided to wait for it all to be out this weekend and finish together as the week to week watching wasn't helping. Feel like when they lost the comedy the last little while it suffered.

TheLoupGarou · 20/01/2024 13:10

@Cobol there's a new LDW show on Disney+ think it's called A Killer's Shopping List ....

PunksVersusBrats · 20/01/2024 14:07

Hello, newbie poking my head tentatively in. I've lurked and read for a while and am now feeling brave.

My husband and I discovered Kdramas during lockdown having first watched the Chinese epic The Rise of Phoenixes. Korean Odyssey was our gateway drug, followed by Crash Landing on You and we've been hooked ever since. I've learnt to cook some of the food I've seen but I've not branched into the music yet.

We've just finished Death's Game (loved it) and will wrap up My Demon (OK) tonight.

TheLoupGarou · 20/01/2024 14:18

Welcome @PunksVersusBrats ! Don't be shy - we are a friendly bunch, if also a bit bananas 😁 I apologise in advance for any k-pop spam/thirst posts...

Korean Odyssey was one of my first dramas as well and I LOVED Death's Game. Have you done Gyeongsong Creature yet?

I've just picked up A Good Day To Be A Dog again after being unable to cope with the 1 ep a week schedule. It's actually so cute. Don't reckon I'll finish it in time to score for the end of the thread though. I don't know if Cha Eun Woo can ever top his forbidden fruit hotness in Island for me 😏

PunksVersusBrats · 20/01/2024 16:50

Thank you for the lovely welcome !

I've still got Gyeongsong Creature on my Netflix list so might go that way next. I liked Kingdom but failed at the first episode of Sweet Home so my zombie/monster tastes are fickle 😁

Interesting to see Coffee Prince mentioned. Apart from Sweet Home, it's one of the very few that I couldn't stick with. Maybe I need to persevere if the hotness is worth it 🤣

Cobol · 20/01/2024 17:41

AmVa I agree My Demon lacks gravitas and thinking back it most reminded me of Bride of Habaek when I started it so maybe it'll finish that way too (hopefully).

TheLoup We just got rid of Disney+☹️

Welcome to PunksVersusBrats (and any other newbies I've missed)

Cobol · 20/01/2024 17:58

Of course Habaek was an actual god, Lee Yeon a gumiho and Gong Yoo's Goblin was nearly a 1000 years old whereas poor Gu-won is just a 200 year old crossroads demon, so maybe we're expecting a bit much from him 😂

Haha! Very true.
(This is totally giving me a hankering to revisit Bride of Haebak if only for all the bathing scenes 🤣)

If you are up for BL - My Personal Weatherman and The End Of The World With You (both on viki) I reckon you might like the second one as its set during the apocalypse, sort of and has some really spicy bits. One of the ML's is a total bag of dicks to start with, but stay with it....

TheLoupGarou · 20/01/2024 20:33

Maybe not new enough though? They were just new to me as I watched them recently 🤣

Based on this I was wondering why I never watched bride of haebek. Looked it up and remembered why - somewhat irrationally I cannot abide Nam Joo-Hyuk. Think all my annoyance at Start Up has settled on him.

Welcome! I also started Coffee Prince a while ago and dropped it - mainly due to poor (read old) film quality and bad fashion 😅. Glad I have come back to it now - partly because now I've watched so many more dramas so there's a lot more I get now, and also partly because of the GY factor. How could I call myself a gong Yoo stan if I hadn't seen one of his seminal works?!!!

Comparing it to contemporary dramas is super interesting too
