MsLatté’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama addicts #44): In which a surprise feast of corking contract marriage dramas 🙌 is undercut by an imminent BTS content famine as Jung Kook, RM, V and Jimin enlist 😭

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4894818-mslattes-daebak-cybercafe-kdrama-addicts-42-where-we-marvel-over-the-singularity-of-taecyeons-ears-while-waiting-for-lee-min-ho-to-show-up-in-his-space-scrubs?page=1here.
Our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

When we resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

Great start Briiiiick! 👏 I liked him in Miraculous Bros as well.

Oh Man Suk - if you want to get a new TV, fine - but it's replacing the old one, not for the bedroom!!

I looked him up too and I can call him oppa for real 😉😘 (saying that always makes me think of the scene in Be Melodramatic where the character is trying to get the asshole actor to do product placement - I'll have to practice my pout/head-tilt)

MigsandTiggs · 26/12/2023 17:43

This alternative oppa needs to forget about online shopping TVs today and just chill in front of a warm fire, contemplating why Koreans order 25 million different dishes when it's just a meal for two in Paradise (Singles Inferno). Perhaps someone who's been to South Korea knows the answer?
Happy Boxing Day!!!

I caught up with Tell Me That You Love Me this evening. It continues to be wonderful. I love the pace, atmosphere and performances so much.

I also discovered Soundtrack #2 on Disney+, after initially getting it mixed up with Soundtrack #1. It’s a standalone story with a new cast but same premise about a song-writing partnership with more. It’s not quite as engaging as #1 but I like it enough to have binged 3 episodes back to back this evening. 🤣

Really really upset and angry about that news. A family destroyed over ridiculous double standards. I hope it provokes cultural change rather than a double down.

boatyardblues · 27/12/2023 07:10

This is very sad news. 😔 He was such a gifted actor. His performance in My Mister is outstanding. I hope the press and netizens back off and give his family space to grieve.

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 27/12/2023 07:17

I didn’t know he was married to Jeon Hye-Jin - she is the mum in Not Others and one of the three badass women in WWW: Search. The media interest is certain to be huge and intrusive. ☹️

OP posts:
MigsandTiggs · 27/12/2023 07:19

His agency has already asked for the family to be left to grieve in peace.

TheLoupGarou · 27/12/2023 07:39

What an absolute tragedy for his family and a waste of life and talent. He must have felt his world completely crumbling around him - poor man.

MigsandTiggs · 27/12/2023 08:02

Just imagine the effect of a 19 hour police questioning session 😢

DoloresDelEriba · 27/12/2023 09:05

Horrific news. How are actors and idols meant to live with this bizarre moral code? The slightest whiff of ‘wrongdoing’ and they get cancelled.

What sad news. I just read a BBC article last week about South Korea's high suicide rate. Japan has had some success tackling similar high rates in recent years with investment in suicide prevention. I hope South Korea can do likewise.

Sadly one of our previous alt-oppas has passed away (RIP My Mister ❤️)

Today's Oppa has been mostly a film actor but popped up this year in a drama most of us enjoyed Moving. It's Ryu Seung Ryong! Has he got a cold neck?

boatyardblues · 27/12/2023 17:11

Ryu Seung Ryong was great in Moving. Total ahjussi, but v compelling.

I finished Soundtrack #2 earlier. It’s not as charming as Soundtrack #1 (no PHS) but nips along & concludes well. The ML looks like he’s been chiselled from marble - all angular lines and flawless planes.

I’m now chuckling at the first couples challenge in Singles Inferno S3. 😄

boatyardblues · 27/12/2023 17:34

I don’t understand how everyone is staying on land in Singles Inferno. The water looks so inviting, especially in that heat. I’d bin off the guys and head off for a swim.

Interesting culture/language nugget from the military service episode of the Korea Deconstructed podcast: chingu is only used with people of the same age. They don’t have an all purpose word for friend which covers intergenerational friendships or eg friendship with a colleague 10 years older than you.

Has anyone mentioned JSA - Joint Security Area. Came out in about 2000 about the guard posts either side of the DMZ and the international inspectors.

Am a big fan of Korean food and have been there several times

Ooh this one is definitely alternative! I've not seen Moving so I only know Ryu Seong Ryong as the scheming baddie in Kingdom, So he's definitely a wrong un (excuse the pun 😜)in my eyes

Welcome Brefugee! 👋 Way back when JSA was on Netflix. I started watching it but it didn’t grip me & it felt a bit dated, so I dropped it. Is it worth sticking with it?

it was a bit of a slow burn drama, and not like a lot of Korean films in that the main female character is only half-Korean. But i felt the pay-off worth it. I haven't seen it for a while though.

I worked for a korean company - they took us to a Korean film festival to see a light drama called Our Teacher, Mr Kim which was actually quite sad in many ways.
