Ugh. Layton's dance tonight - there was no nuance, no light or shade. It was two dancers dancing separately. I don't think Layton has improved over the series.

Stressybetty · 26/11/2023 00:08

Don't rate Layton tonight either. I don't understand why they couldn't just do a traditional AS and put the work into doing it perfectly. Nikita adding bits of waltz, foxtrot etc so there was more time in hold and a more complicated routine just didn't make sense. Was it to show off or push Layton further?

melisma · 26/11/2023 06:33

I felt a bit underwhelmed by last night to be honest! I am usually a Layton fan but this was by far their weakest dance. Although I cannot agree with others on this thread that there has been no improvement from Layton - week 1 Layton never could have produced that Argentine tango.

melisma · 26/11/2023 06:35

@Stressybetty I wonder if it's a Gamble Nikita has taken, as if they make it through and with waltz and foxtrot "ticked off", it leaves them with three potentially WOW dances running up to the final (charleston, paso doble and rumba)?

MrsDotCotton · 26/11/2023 07:42

I was thinking about last night's show and I think basically other than Ellie it was all a bit underwhelming for this stage in the contest.

I’d like to see them do a waltz - i always think that’s a deceptively tough dance to shine in because it’s quite dull in itself yet requires good technique. Being able to do the splits or a back flip is no advantage in the waltz, but a great dancer will always make it look stunning.

Samcro · 26/11/2023 08:53

the judging annoyed me. so last week bobby is in the do, this week he does a cc. shirley cries. motsi says she isn't even judging it on the dancing!!
mad.
they don't say anything critical about nigel , but mark him down.
the only one who doesn't play this game is craig and he gets booed.
i hate cc, its unfair. the only way it would work if they all did it the same week. and it could just be judged on who has the sadest story.

Agree with this. Giving high scores for sob stories just annoys me.

As I said before, I watch for fun, for great dancing not to be upset or even cry.

I personally thought everything about Bobby's dance was awful - the song, the costumes, the wafting about, the story.

I don't like being played and I feel the viewers were played. As I also said before, I don't believe for 1 second that Bobby's favourite song is This woman's work. He is 20 years old for goodness sake. I honestly think he didn't even know the song before last week. When he talked about the song and the dance on It Takes Two he didn't seem to even know what he was talking about.

melisma · 26/11/2023 09:09

@Samcro I completely agree. I couldn't believe it when the judges (I think Motsi?) said something about them needing to focus on quality and technique at this stage in the competition, and then in the next breath saying "but for a dance like this, that doesn't really matter"!

Nora1978 · 26/11/2023 09:12

I’m not as anti couple’s choice as others are. I love the street dancey ones like Bill Bailey and Oti and if they don’t include more contemporary genres then the show does run the risk of being a little bit dated at some point. It’s good that they show that sometimes dance can be used to tell a story or convey an overwhelming emotion. I do accept though that it’s hard to judge these dances against others that have more specific techniques so perhaps a couple’s choice week for everyone would be fairer.

I like hearing people’s stories, it makes the show more interesting to get to know the celebrities as people. Bobby’s story was quite uplifting- his parents came from very difficult backgrounds yet they’ve shown that even if you’ve had a harsh childhood with little role models or education, you can break the cycle and be a good parent as Jeff and Jade obviously were. Annabelle’s story was also moving, she was urging people to make the most of the small moments rather than being too focused on a future that may never come. I think the show would be a little repetitive if it was really only about footwork and necklines, the human stories are part of it. People are so mean to the celebrities online that it’s only fair they get to tell their own story. I definitely saw Layton differently after he spoke about leaving his family to come to London age 11.

This show is fun escapism on a Saturday night and things like scores shouldn’t be taken too seriously, these celebrities will continue to do alright in life whether they win or not. I’d love to come home from work to Claudia’s dry humour and Tess gushing about how hard I’ve worked! 😂

Choux · 25/11/2023 20:38

Jeff seems to have had a really difficult start in life (and Jade's childhood was not easy either). Looking on Wikipedia:

Brazier was born Jeffrey Carl Smith on 27 May 1979 in Bracknell, Berkshire.[5][6] His mother Janette Smith was sixteen at the time of his birth, and Brazier was temporarily placed in a foster home after she became unable to cope.[7] She married his stepfather Robert Brazier in 1985, whose surname he adopted.[8] Together, they had Brazier's younger brother Spencer who has cerebral palsy.[9] After they split, Brazier and his brother lived in a women's refuge in Great Yarmouth.[8] Brazier's biological father, Stephen Faldo, who initially denied paternity, was the skipper of the pleasure boat Marchionesss^, which sank on the River Thames in 1989 after being hit by a dredger, killing him as well as 50 others.[10]

Gosh Jeff has had a hard time of it. He deserves every success and should be proud of all he has achieved in life.

CaveMum · 26/11/2023 09:15

They need to get rid of CC altogether. After all the Show Dance in the Final is already effectively a CC. It’s not a case of there not being enough dances to get to the Final, as things stand all the Finalists will drop 2 dances from the list anyway.

Mrsjayy · 26/11/2023 09:23

you are right he didn't seem to know what he was on about it Is all contrived manipulated nonsense! I think when Annabel did her CC it was a bit less forced

Clawdy · 26/11/2023 09:38

Each week I thought how refreshing that Bobby wasn't using his mother as a sob story, not even saying something like "Wish mum could see me!" Now he's ticked the box, and spoiled it for me.

covetingthepreciousthings · 26/11/2023 09:47

Does anyone know what musical Layton and Nikita will do if through to next weeks musicals week? Apparently they've been given one that they wanted (it's not one that's he's been in).

Hoping it'll be a Paso or Charleston, but just wondering which musical they may have chosen.

PantsToItAll · 26/11/2023 09:58

I agree re Bobby and the cc. He seemed so clueless on ITT like he wasn’t aware of what the concept was for the week even though it was his emotional story about his own mum apparently. He made reference to Diane representing “woman”. All seemed very odd. I didn’t like the singer either I couldn’t make out most of the lyrics which had been bigged up as being so profound and meaningful to Bobby. He’ll be safe and through to next week anyway I’m sure.

I loved Ellie and Annabel - seriously wishing for both to be in the final. Both have had a “journey” and both seem like genuine and lovely people.

Angela I’m still not clicking with her as a person sorry. Her dance wasn’t her best either (seems her Irish dancing is ingrained in her muscle memory so comes out - I don’t know much about dancing but isn’t that the case re weight being back and stiff leg etc as totally different technique). Has she does CC yet I can’t remember? Maybe Carlos will have to learn some Irish dancing! I think she should be out this week though. I felt bit bad for her though just before the open vote bit when scores being done she obvioautl knew bottom and Gio pulled her in for quick peck on cheek as she must have been looking upset.

Layton … ah Layton. I’m surprised actually. He’s not does as brilliantly as I expected in this. No stream of 40s and for me no stand out dances. I think, as others have said, it’s because he’s always always Layton. Every dance has a samey feel as he (Nikita?) have tried to laytonise strictly rather than strictlify Layton (I’d like to give credit to the PP who used this phrase but can’t remember who it was - it was very accurate and clearly stuck with me so hope they don’t mind me repeating!). I think he’d have to on much more favour with audiences if he’s done a “traditional” version of at least a couple of the dances without throwing highlights in. Having said that he’s a much nicer calmer person that I’d fiest imagined he would be. He was clearly bit upset prior to end of show also. Will be interesting to see how he reacts if he is indeed in DO.

Nigel was good but I couldn’t focus for trying figure out Kaytas bum and her outfit 🤣 It was very distracting. he just doesn’t seem to have been as good as I expected him. It was funny Tess (I think) said he was a start of stage and would he make it to musicals week. They aren’t hiding it. If him and Layton both make it that’s two of the 5 on ho have been in actual musicals performing on musicals week!!

Overall I’d like to see Angela, Nigel or Bobby go before the finals. I do wonder if we’ll get a surprise tonight and find someone like Ellie in the DO purely due to lack of votes as people think she is “safe”. I voted Annabel as love her but wish I’d given a vote to Ellie now too as she deserves to stay. Fans will vote for Layton as lower on board so risk of DO. Angela and Nigel y seem to have good fan bases from prior weeks not being in DO even if bottom two. Bobby will get extra cc boost this week. Am looking forward to seeing tonight!

I bet its,Dear Evan Hanson just for the melodrama 😄

I actually like Layton better than I thought I would but last night was just meh, just do the dance Layton stop faffing about as Len used to say.

EsmaCannonball · 26/11/2023 10:25

Based purely on Nikita's hair and ensemble in last night's show, I'm calling it now -

Nikita = Elaine Paige
Layton = Barbara Dickson

They're going to be giving it the full hairspray, shoulder-pads and dry-ice.

Wasn't it good?
Oh, so good!
Wasn't he fine?
Oh, so fine!
Isn't it madness, he can't be mine?

(I'm going to be really disappointed now when it isn't this.)

dollybird · 26/11/2023 10:27

It looked like her dress got caught in her knickers!

Me too! Huuuuuge wigs would be required not just a bit of Elnett.

EsmaCannonball · 26/11/2023 10:38

I'd like Ellie and Vito to do something proper Hollywood. Maybe a quickstep to Who Wants to Be a Millionaire from High Society?

Have Nigel and Katya done an American Smooth? Maybe they could do one to Oh What a Beautiful Morning from Oklahoma!? Nigel could showcase his Curly.

You see, if Nikita's being Elaine, I don't think he'll need the wig.

Just a bit of back combing.
Also, some apricot shimmer lipstick.

OTOH if they all did the CC in the same week we'd guarantee seeing two of them in the DO, and unless the leaderboard was manipulated shamelessly those two might well be sad personal ones.
