But if you're aiming a book at those people who heat up ready meals, wouldn't Nigella's approach be better? ie real food just done quickly?

Carmenere · 10/03/2008 21:15

Yes but Hula, she is one of the wealthiest women in the UK, she would have made a mint on any book. This just means she is not a very nice person.

brimfull · 10/03/2008 21:15

I have come to the conclusion that Delia is actually a bit rough.

redrobin · 10/03/2008 21:15

yes couldn't agree with you more Carmenere - did anyone hear her on the Today programme when she said she was 'sorry about the planet but liked her kenyan green beans'? silly silly selfish woman. you can tell she is getting old and hasn't got kids - she doesn;t care about the planet.

Hulababy · 10/03/2008 21:18

It just means she's the same as most people in her situation. She is into business. She is making moey. You don't get that well known and that much money from being "nice" about it.

I'd still rather watch Delia than some of the poncy cooks who only make things that they know is way too difficult and challenging for the ordinary person,
or listening to a cook swear throughout a 30 minute programme.

PeachesMcLean · 10/03/2008 21:23

But Delia has made all her money to date by doing very credible and respected cooking. She's earned a fortune from it. Stupid to sell out now, loosing respect and credibility all round?

cremolafoam · 10/03/2008 21:25

can we have a scale for 'mad' cookery show presenters:
1- Delia
2- Nigella
3-

What was lovely Nigel dong on there?
move away from the crazy woman
was it just to endorse her so she didn'tlook quite so mad.or was he there to give her the pills.

TurkeyLurkey · 10/03/2008 21:30

I agree Hulababy. This program isn't aimed at cooks. Its for those who haven't got a clue and might be reaching for the frozen kebabs and Findus Crispy Pancakes each night.

That mince looked shite but the rest looked nice. She combined most of the frozen stuff with fresh veg too which can't be a bad thing.

A lot of people who can't or won't cook can't be arsed because it takes too long. She's just trying to make it simple and quick.

Oh come on, mash is not difficult. If you really cannot be asked to peel spuds, then stick some baking pots in the oven. I cannot think of a single use in my house, at least, for frozen mash. And trust me, I'm quite a lazy cook, I do cook from scratch but I do it the quickest least painful way. And anyone who's ever tasted a homemade Yorkshire pudding is definitely not going to be buying Aunt Bessies, they're horrible.

Hulababy · 10/03/2008 21:38

Actually I have frozen and homemade Yorkshire Puds and TBh they are not that made at all IME. nd as I said before - ideal when you only want to make 2 r 3 for Dd and friends.

Mash I do with a poato ricer - microwave full potato for 5 minutes or so, put through ricer - and done

cremolafoam · 10/03/2008 21:38

even dd(12) asked :'why does she not just grate a potato into that soup.???? she is going to whizz it up anyway.'

sunflowervalley · 10/03/2008 21:38

Well I thought maybe she had sold out a bit ,but as Hulababy said it's probably aimed at the people who buy ready meals all the time.
This may get them interested in actually cooking something for themselves all be it from ready made ingredients.

Much prefer it to Jamie at home.
Watched him the other night prancing around his vegetable garden in his birkenstocks all so pretentious.

fishie · 10/03/2008 21:39

i've got delia's original 'how to cheat book' upstairs somewhere, will try to dig it out. i seem to remember it is shit. only got to see delia being silly at football on tonight's prog, did she actually cook anything at all?

all very well saying its aimed at non-cooking/ready meal/takeway bods, but in that case why is it on bbc2 on a monday evening? half way through ant and dec would be far better placement surely.

Twinklemegan · 10/03/2008 21:40

I didn't watch this, figuring it was aimed at the microwave meal generation. It sounds like I was right - how sad.

TurkeyLurkey · 10/03/2008 21:42

No, mash potato isn't difficult but to some people its the being arsed/having time to do it. If its there all done, they can cut the corners and rustle up a dish like the salmon pie which didn't look half bad. Its only frozen spuds anyway, no e numbers or anything. Where's the problem with that?

Surely thats better than ordering a takeaway pizza or whatever again?

I'm thinking of the energy and packaging involved in making these "convenience" products. If people can't be arsed they need to get over themselves and be thankful they don't have to grind their own flour!

rantinghousewife · 10/03/2008 21:47

Look I am not being a food snob, I even indulge in the odd, once in a blue moon Super Noodle fetish. But I fail to see what's taxing about putting a potato in the oven for a couple of hours.

Hulababy · 10/03/2008 21:48

You'd be arguing against the time involved there though - 2 hours. Mind you my jackets only take an hour, but even so some people don't have an hour spare after work I guess.

rantinghousewife · 10/03/2008 21:51

Fair enough, yes it takes time and after work that is precious but, you said yourself Hula, 5 minutes in microwave, ricer (best mash with ricer, I agree), hey presto.
I consider myself to be the laziest person I know but I still make my own mash and yorkshire puddings and toad etc.

nkf · 10/03/2008 21:54

Perhaps she's had a change of heart and realises that her life's work teaching the nation to cook has been a hollow sham and next she will be advertising Pot Noodles.

RubberDuck · 10/03/2008 22:07

Is no-one going to demand Bree spills the tip she had from her executive chef?!!

JulesJules · 10/03/2008 22:11

Blimey, you lot, self righteous or what! There are millions of people who don't know how to make a cheese sauce from scratch, and who live off ready meals and takeaways. Nearly all the people my DH works with eat like this. I don't think Delia is saying everyone should cook with prepared ingredients all the time - it's an option for when you are too pushed for time, haven't got the fresh stuff in or can't cook. And apparently she has not received any money from the supermarkets for mentioning their stuff. I think this is a more realistic approach than most tv chefs, either Jamie (all you need is a walled organic garden and your own personal gardener) or Nigella (just ask the cab driver to stop at your exclusive cheese shop next to VV Roleaux. Or get the BBC to commandeer a London bus for you) - much as I love Nigella for being so hilarious.

rantinghousewife · 10/03/2008 22:15

I'm sorry, I've just snorted tea from my nose. Self righteous for pointing out that it's not rocket science to bake a potato!
