I actually think it was good to have an episode which didn't have every case have a 'happy ending' where they achieve the goal.
I think TV starts to give the false impression that DNA has all the answers and that it's really easy to find out the answer to the big family secret.
In truth, how many stories do production teams look at and then drop because they are 'tv worthy' because they can't find out as much information?
Seeing some disappointment is a good thing - I mean I never get the surprise that Davina is greeted with when she tells a family member they found someone. It's not like I've ever seen Davina say, oh sorry we couldn't find anyone. So it's refreshing for me for the BBC to be doing that in contrast to the ITV happyeverafter show.
In reality I suspect that there's a lot more misses than hits.
For example my parent has something like 50 first cousins on their mum's side. They've not had a single one pop up as a match nor their descendants - except this odd match that was a complete secret and not a known part of the family.
My parent has had a couple of second cousins pop up - their mum had something like 20 aunts and uncles and several of them had families of eight or more. The matches they've had originate from the US when DNA testing is more popular than the UK. That's a pool of a hundreds matches my parent could hit but hasn't.
Their closest match have popped up because she was looking for some - my parent didn't really have a compelling reason test they were just a bit curious. My point being there's something of a self selecting limited pool of people who will sign up to tests in the UK even now.
My point being my parent has an above average hundreds of potential hits for first or second cousins (up or down removed) because they has an abnormally high number of close relatives - but they still have a very small number of matches in that range.
If you are looking for an answer to a question, you need some luck over who has signed up before you. I'd argue more people are going to be unlucky rather than lucky at this stage still.
