Period dramas! Don't they make them anymore?

I really fancy a good Sunday night period drama in the style of Poldark, Downton Abbey, Pride and Prejudice etc. But there hasn't been an epic soapy period drama series in ages! Unless I've missed one? I hope I have so I can catch up on it. Is it the cost of living or something?! I'm going to start a petition about this.

Bridgerton?

tennissquare · 24/09/2023 20:21

Have you watched Sanditon Series 3 on ITVX? It had American money to help it get made. I think Bridgerton on Netflix and The Gilded Age on Sky are such big budget productions it's hard to compete. But yes I miss them too.

xsquared · 24/09/2023 20:26

Great Expectations was on fairly recently, but that was abysmal!

Catbustotoro · 24/09/2023 20:28

I'm just watching Austenland on Netflix, and it's fab!
It's a 10 year old film, rather than a miniseries, but it's delightful!

Dogsitterwoes · 24/09/2023 20:29

Gentleman Jack
Outlander
Bridgerton and Queen Charlotte

I've just seen something on a series called Belgravia, which looks promising.

I agree a new one is overdue for cosy Sunday viewing

Dogsitterwoes · 24/09/2023 20:32

Ooh and The Mill (on Prime)

Hermittrismegistus · 24/09/2023 20:33

Have you watched Versailles?

RoyKentFanclub · 24/09/2023 20:36

The Great is fab (Amazon prime and channel 4) - Catherine the great
The Empress was also good (Netflix) - the Hapsburgs
antionette was on bbc iPlayer I think

ageingdisgracefully · 24/09/2023 20:54

I don't know if you remembered it first time around, but Vanity Fair 1998 is on Prime. Great fun.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 24/09/2023 21:27

Did you see War and Peace on iPlayer? Sublime music and casting

TitsInColinsHands · 24/09/2023 21:28

If you haven't then Sanditon is a fabulous watch, my heart was happy with that (I am clearly so used to watching unhappy tv shows!) I don't know why it took me so long to watch it!

Riverlee · 24/09/2023 21:28

I think they go through phases. We have none for ages, and then they become back into fashion.

MeinKraft · 25/09/2023 03:22

I've seen Bridgerton and Outlander, don't think I ever properly watched Sanderton so will give that another go, thanks!

I used to love Victoria but I don’t think there will be a series 4 of that now

LadyEloise1 · 25/09/2023 10:23

I've a really good idea for a period drama, Julian Fellowes take note please 😀

Why not follow the lives of Queen Victoria's children and grandchildren.
She had many - 9 !!!

They intermarried with European royalty. It would be really interesting to follow their lives, the people they met, the historical events that happened during their lifetime.

Series 1 could be 9 or 10 episodes starting with Victoria and Albert's background.
Then each child could be featured per episode.
Series 2 could be the grandchildren - their lives, historical events etc.

You're welcome.

piscofrisco · 25/09/2023 10:32

I was just thinking last night that what I really wanted was Lark Rise to Candleford. Or something very like it. Settled for watching Howard's End on Netflix .but I want a nice gentle period mini series!!

Script commissioned, you have the green light!

DaisyWaldron · 25/09/2023 10:38

I think The Archers is gearing up to a Christmas radio adaptation of Lark Rise to Candleford featuring the cast, because I can think of no other reason why half the characters are reading it and chatting about it at every opportunity.

I love a costume drama but I wouldn't tune in for that one.

MeinKraft · 25/09/2023 15:37

I don't know if anyone has read the Karen Swan St Kilda books but I think they'd be perfect for a drama series. Sholto is probably the only book character I've actually ever fancied if that's possible!

That makes a lot of sense!

I sort of see The Crown in this space a bit. Especially the first 3 series.

I sort of love Black Sails on Prime about the golden age of piracy but it's not something to watch with your nan. Also I second The Great (another perhaps not to watch at teatime - Huzzah).

I would like to see Behind the Scenes at the Museum by Kate Atkinson dramatised which would be period by now.
