Period dramas! Don't they make them anymore?

I really fancy a good Sunday night period drama in the style of Poldark, Downton Abbey, Pride and Prejudice etc. But there hasn't been an epic soapy period drama series in ages! Unless I've missed one? I hope I have so I can catch up on it. Is it the cost of living or something?! I'm going to start a petition about this.

Yes, definitely A Place to Call Home, Australian drama set in the 50s, one of my favourite series

I've a really good idea for a period drama, Julian Fellowes take note please 😀

Why not follow the lives of Queen Victoria's children and grandchildren.
She had many - 9 !!!

They intermarried with European royalty. It would be really interesting to follow their lives, the people they met, the historical events that happened during their lifetime.

Series 1 could be 9 or 10 episodes starting with Victoria and Albert's background.
Then each child could be featured per episode.
Series 2 could be the grandchildren - their lives, historical events etc.

You're welcome.

Check out The Royal Mob (2022) which was a very enjoyable series about the lives of four of Victoria's granddaughters m.imdb.com/title/tt21366490/

I'm annoyed Harlots isn't on the iplayer. I only saw the first series.

Will do @BridgetJonesDaiquiri

I wish someone brought to TV Georgette Heyer’s regency novels, so much better than Bridgerton. Also The Swift and the Harrier begs for adaptation. Or any of Barbara Pym’s books, though not necessarily period dramas.

I sort of see The Crown in this space a bit. Especially the first 3 series.

I sort of love Black Sails on Prime about the golden age of piracy but it's not something to watch with your nan. Also I second The Great (another perhaps not to watch at teatime - Huzzah).

I would like to see Behind the Scenes at the Museum by Kate Atkinson dramatised which would be period by now.

If you like Kate Atkinson, have you seen the dramatisation of Life after Life?

I don't know if you remembered it first time around, but Vanity Fair 1998 is on Prime. Great fun.

Along with The Crimson Petal and the White, this is my favourite BBC drama.

I have a lot of time recuperating to fill, so this will be perfect watching. Thank you!

The Empress on Netflix, was released last year and was amazing.

It's in German but if you don't like subtitles there is an English dub.

It's on Lionsgate. Omg it's the best series ever. Why did they take it off?!

GunboatDiplomacy · 04/10/2023 22:29

Apple TV is about to do The Buccaneers. There are quite a lot of ways you can get a few months free trial if you don't currently subscribe.

Hope your recuperation is going well, OP.

I've just found Middlemarch on iplayer. Apparently the bbc is showing quite a few classics from the 1990s. I didn't have time for telly back then, so I'm making up for lost time now. 😎
