A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese, Thai & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4842000-mslattes-daebak-cybercafe-kdrama-addicts-42-where-we-weigh-up-two-smokin-hawt-chaebol-hotelliers-one-tortured-by-loss-and-the-other-crippled-by-abandonment-issues?page=1here
but our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We often resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

I really like Wi Ha-Joon and he's definitely on my list. However, he has unnaturally straight teeth as in the bottom of his teeth form a line! Not very kind to notice such things (especially in someone I do think is gorgeous)...

Yang Se-Jong, Lee Jun-ho and Kim Ji-hoon are all fairly new to me this year. Only the latter is age appropriate though!

MigsandTiggs · 03/11/2023 20:44

<whispers> sakura, when you self-identify as 30, everyone's age appropriate...

🤣 my new mantra.

Also, I'm totally going to be looking hard at WHJ's teeth next time I see him

boatyardblues · 03/11/2023 21:23

God, the psych ward work dinner in ep 2 of DDOS is bringing me out in hives. Not fun.

Was anyone else totally gobsmacked by this week's suggestion that S Korea restrict pay for foreign workers to what they would get in their home country? This is supposed to be a solution for employers in manufacturing as the sector experiences a shortfall in workers with a resulting rise in costs. Looks like we are not the only country with bonehead politicians.🙄

UK plumbers on £70+ph looking for an ABG must be like 😎YES!!!!

I've finished Miraculous Brothers which ended really well, now to choose another drama. I seem to only be able to watch one show at a time these days. I really fancy a Saeguk, but also want to watch My Mister as I've been saying I'm going to watch it for about 3 years now...

And 7 😭😭😭😭😭

I’m chuckling at Rowoon having to duck under door lintels and beams in The Matchmakers because he’s so flippin’ tall in his scholar’s hat. The ordinary blokes (extras) are just walking through like normal people.

DDOS sadness. Uh uh. Not today. I want chipper.

DDOS - just watched ep 1 & 2 - aw it's good isn't it? I thought at first it was going to be too much like real life/work (i got v indignant at some redeployment decisions from the nurse manager in FL's previous job)* but it hooked me in in the last 10 mins or so. The bit with the appointment for the haemorrhoids was v funny - the guys face when he heard the knuckles cracking behind the curtain 🤣

boatyardblues · 04/11/2023 20:09

I stumbled on Quiz Lady on Disney+. Tangentially relevant because of Sandra Oh, but barely. It’s a broad American comedy but worth a look because Sandra Oh was almost unrecognisable. She’s hilarious - and brave (the outfits! 🫣) Awkwafina and Sandra Oh are fab as chalk and cheese sisters.

I'm really liking it. Interested in all our nurse/HCP thread chingus opinions on the accuracy!

TheLoupGarou · 04/11/2023 21:03

Definitely accurate in relation to workplace politics and gossip and randomly bumping into colleagues in embarrassing medical situations 🤣 when I was a student I also got told I had the 'right temperament for psychiatry' so that one hit a bit of a nerve, like 'what, you mean I actually care about my patients???' #stillnotoverit

edited for spelling

boatyardblues · 05/11/2023 15:11

DH is interested in colour. We were just talking about the set design in DDOS. He pointed out that the salmon pink and mint/sage shades in the staff area complement each other, but the lime green in the patient room (tense scissor scene ep 4) was more jarring and discordant. It reminded me the patient who stripped was in the lime green/turquoise corridor at the time. I will be paying more attention to this now.

Is Daily Dose of Sunshine a bit like It’s Okay not to be Okay?

boatyardblues · 05/11/2023 18:10

possibly. I didn’t finish It’s OK. I found the FL unlikeable and all the weird whimsy meh. I’d say DDOS is closer to Hospital Playlist than IONTBO. I’m enjoying this way more, and it’s just down to Park Bo Young.

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 05/11/2023 18:11

NOT just down to PBY. She does make everything she’s in better, but the supporting cast are great in this & their characters well drawn.

OP posts:
Andante57 · 05/11/2023 18:22

Thank you Boaty. I couldn’t get going with IONTBO either.

polkettle · 05/11/2023 18:53

I'm 5 episodes in and loving it. Particularly Mr Yoon.
I think you'd enjoy Andante - each episode is a mini story about a different patient and some are quite heart-rending but it's warm.

TheLoupGarou · 05/11/2023 19:54

Can confirm every real department has a Mr Yoon equivalent 😁

I was getting a touch of 2ML syndrome when I was watching - its Reply 1988 & Her Private Life all over again.

Rowdythree · 05/11/2023 21:18

I had FOMO so I've also started DDoS, 4 episodes in and I'm loving it too. Park Bo Young is so watchable and likeable. And Mr Yoon is a hero!

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 05/11/2023 23:12

Just finished DDOS. Great wee show, gave me all the feels. Quietly, one of the top for the year, I think.
