Looking for a really good crime/mystery series that isn't just a dreary cop drama

I hated Happy Valley, can't stand lightweight crap like Vera, but loved In The Woods, Line of Duty, Smother, Inside Man and Bloodlands

I seem to have reached that point where I've either seen everything or don't fancy it...can anyone point me to any hidden gems? I like cop/procedural stuff as long as there's a human narrative outside the police element, a good mystery or historic crime/cold case etc. It needs to be intelligent and well-written.

Any recs?

I'm rewatching What Remains on iplayer.

fivelilducks · 31/08/2023 18:39

Manifest

Traceyislivid · 31/08/2023 18:50

Wolf bbc. It’s quite scary too

Persiana · 31/08/2023 18:51

I liked Mare of Eastown and Sharp Objects on Now tv.
Spiral as pp mentioned

Astrid in Paris on 4, Walter presents- very different

A few foreign dramas I can't remember where I watched-
Wisting
Valhalla murders
Beck
The hunt for a serial killer

La Mante, The Sinner, Mindhunter- especially the latter, on Netflix

What about real oldies but goodies e.g. Cracker, Prime Suspect

BasiliskStare · 31/08/2023 18:53

Foyle's War - just great

Eyesopenwideawake · 31/08/2023 18:57

Just finished Who is Erin Carter? on NF - very good

beetr00 · 31/08/2023 19:13

@Greensleeves older series but with the excellent Helen Mirren

www.itv.com/watch/prime-suspect/1a1685

also agree with pp who suggested Fargo, free on Amazon Prime

Sixth Commandment - a really moving story about a con man and murder. Focuses mainly on the victims rather than the procedure. It's on iplayer in four parts.

Really sad case.

Thanks, I binged watched this today. Great recommendation.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 27/09/2023 02:24

The Bridge but the Swedish version and The Killing but Nordic dramas but so good.
Someone else mentioned Whitechapel and I loved that it was great.

OlizraWiteomQua · 27/09/2023 02:36

Have you watched:
Luther
Lupin
Killing Eve
?

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 27/09/2023 03:22

Bosch on Amazon Prime

Louise303 · 27/09/2023 09:50

Love this series it is very good.

meikyo · 28/09/2023 21:02

Danish Scandi Noir called DNA. Binge watched this when off with Covid a few weeks ago. Also just finished Live and Death, dramatisation of a true story. Both very good.

State of Play with John Simm and Bill Nighy. Bloody superb tight script and great cast

Unforgotten, which deals with cold case murders. Fabulous...the warmth between lead actors is wonderful and it actually reduced my hard as nails husband to tears at the end

The cry

Thought that was absolutely brilliant.
Going back a bit here, but loved The Serpent' too. Same actress.

0rchard · 24/10/2023 19:10

Any more for these recently?

mathsphysics · 24/10/2023 19:24

Endeavour
Grantchester

Loved them both

BanditoShipman · 24/10/2023 19:33

Unforgotten made both me and dh cry, just amazing series. Another one with same actress in was River, different premise and again very moving.

Enjoyed Wolf but quite weird!

Mayor of Kingstown is good with Jeremy Renner

Mare of Eastwood is good with Kate Winslet

The Wire, Narcos (not quite what you asked for), The Fall of the House of Usher (new series, good but weird), Luther

JosieB68 · 24/10/2023 19:38

Unbelievable on Netflix, only been one season. Merritt Weaver she Toni Collette are fantastic

LoreleiG · 24/10/2023 19:41

Hinterland?

Traceyislivid · 24/10/2023 20:50

Bodies on Netflix.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 24/10/2023 20:55

Hinterland
Under the Banner of Heaven
The Mentalist
Grantchester

but honestly - how did you not get on with Happy Valley?

Genehuntsfanclub · 24/10/2023 21:09

Irvine Welsh's Crime on ITV X, 2 series and Dougray Scott is very good.

When the dust settles, on 4 on demand I think (subtitles)

Deadwind

The Bridge is probably the best thing I've seen.

The Tunnel ( English/French) version of the bridge.

Loads more on 4 on demand.
