Looking for a really good crime/mystery series that isn't just a dreary cop drama

I hated Happy Valley, can't stand lightweight crap like Vera, but loved In The Woods, Line of Duty, Smother, Inside Man and Bloodlands

I seem to have reached that point where I've either seen everything or don't fancy it...can anyone point me to any hidden gems? I like cop/procedural stuff as long as there's a human narrative outside the police element, a good mystery or historic crime/cold case etc. It needs to be intelligent and well-written.

Any recs?

The Tourist, very different with a dark humour, persevere with it,it gets better.

I came on to say New Tricks, but someone beat me to it. Start from the beginning. Yeah, silly to say, but their characters develop so well and are so rounded that you need to know the whole story. One of my absolute favourites.

We’re currently watching Three Pines (too early for me to decide how much I like it yet) but it’s reminding me a little bit of Fargo, which is one of the best shows I’ve watched. Might not be quite what you’re after but thought I’d suggest as it is centred around crime.

The Woman in the Wall (just started on iPlayer) is very good. Random bits of humour which lighten it too.

Have you watched the strike series on bbc1?

This.

I think there are 5 series on iplayer

krazynutnut · 30/08/2023 19:21

The cry

User1659463 · 30/08/2023 19:26

The Lincoln Lawyer on Netflix

I've just started Sharp Objects on Sky/Now TV
Based on a book by Gillian Flynn.
It's good so far.

@TerrorOwls

thank you for reminding me. My teenage Goddaughter liked it. Might be a bit low brow for the OP.

Will Trent on Disney is really good!

eandz13 · 30/08/2023 20:17

The Chestnut Man is absolutely brilliant.
As is The Missing, very emotional.

eandz13 · 30/08/2023 20:20

Another I'll add is Under The Banner Of Heaven, it's on Disney+.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 30/08/2023 20:21

Hinterland (a bit of Richard Harrington never hurts 😁)

blutterfly · 30/08/2023 20:25

Silent Witness
The Fall
Dexter

LegendsBeyond · 30/08/2023 20:26

Pieces of Her on Netflix.

WaitingForSunnyDays · 30/08/2023 20:38

I don't think you've said which channels, or if you just want UK, but I'd suggest these - some of them are older:
Fargo ( the first couple of series), The Staircase, Justified ( I really enjoyed that having not expected to at all! Well written fast paced dialogue), The Night Manager Mare of Easttown, The Bay, Professor T, Top of the Lake. Person of Interest, although that might stretch the definition, The Young Montalbano, and Montalbano.

Second No Offence

EileenBrysonsTeabags · 31/08/2023 07:50

The Gold on BBC iplayer is great. Finished it last night. Cast is excellent. Love a bit of 80s nostalgia too with a true crime drama.

muchalover · 31/08/2023 07:58

I loved slow horses on apple.

Trapped was fabulous on Netflix.

The fall.

Strike. I read the most recent book and the writing is so smooth.

TheLongGloriesOfTheWinterMoon · 31/08/2023 14:43

Giri/Haji
Money Heist.

Two of the best series I've ever seen. Ever.

Rewatching Spooks at the moment. Remember loving (and it's on Britbox I think) Our Friends in the North.

Chestnut Man was good, The Bridge was excellent. The Fall was ruined by going on for too long and Gillian Anderson doing that bizarre voice she did for Mrs Thatcher. I never finished the Killing (keep thinking I should go back and start again) Enjoyed Valhalla Murders.

Almahart · 31/08/2023 14:47

Another for No Offence. Love that series

Greensleeves · 31/08/2023 14:49

Wow, loads of great ideas! Thank you. I've seen quite a lot of these (I though Giri/Haji was blinding, would recommend that to anyone) but am googling the ones I haven't seen! I prefer British or Irish as a rule, but there are always exceptions.

Scott and Bailey is fantastic.
State Of Play. John Simm and David Morrisey being awesome.
Life On Mars/Ashes To Ashes?

northernstars · 31/08/2023 15:03

We've just finished State of Play - was shown on BBC4 recently. Just started Grace - also with John Simm

Jewel1968 · 31/08/2023 15:13

Have a look at Katla on Netflix. Icelandic. Not your usual mystery

Morty12 · 31/08/2023 16:50

Lupin
Slow Horses
The Gold
