Ruth Wilson and Daryl McCormack are teaming up for a gripping new BBC drama, which is inspired by the horrifying revelations around Ireland's Magdalene Laundries.

The Woman In The Wall follows the horrors experienced by Lorna Brady (Ruth Wilson) is a woman from the small, fictional Irish town of Kilkinure, who wakes one morning to find a corpse in her house.

Lorna is chilled to the core as she has no idea who the dead woman is or if she could even be responsible for the apparent murder herself. This is a deadly possibility because Lorna suffers from extreme bouts of sleepwalking, which started around the time she was ripped from her life at the age of 15 and incarcerated in the Kilkinure Convent.

The Woman in the Wall follows Lorna Brady (Wilson), a woman who was incarcerated in a convent from a young age, where she traumatically gave birth – only to have the baby taken away from her to whereabouts unknown.

The awful treatment she endured continues to impact her life, causing extreme bouts of sleepwalking that end with her waking up in strange places with no memory of how she got there.

While her specific story is a work of fiction, the Magdalene Laundries were very real and are thought to have blighted the lives of tens of thousands of women.

Although their history dates back further, more is known about the practices of these institutions in the 20th century, where inmates entered via the criminal justice system, reformatory schools and the Health and Social Services sector.

Once inside, they would have to carry out unpaid labour, while many former inmates have reported being abused.

Magdalene Laundries became the subject of a media scandal in the 1990s, when a mass grave holding 155 bodies was discovered on the former grounds of one such institution in Drumcondra, Dublin.

I thought it was superb. Dark and unpredictable. Absolutely brilliant acting.

This summed it up for me. Preferred it to Philomena, so far.

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/08/2023 23:19

I would say any sane woman would have called the police

But obv due to background and her mental health and tired due to sleep walking her brain prob wasn't working right

Tho she seemed very methodical if that's the right word when fixing the water pipe

And the wall once put the woman in there

I did like Philomena and the Magdalene sisters. For me this seemed quite clever and was jumping around all over the place but I’ll give it another chance.

Not same subject but I saw an Irish film recently can’t think of name but where a young girl is sent to live with relatives over the summer holidays. A very well shot, acted and directed film. Very touching.

LadyEloise1 · 27/08/2023 23:38

@GonnaGetGoingReturns
The film was called An Cailín Ciúin. It was really good.

I'm not sure about this one.

duc748 · 27/08/2023 23:55

I'm not either. But hey, I just listened to this, from someone with personal experience:

He moved through the Fair - Sinéad O'Connor

purpleme12 · 28/08/2023 00:58

It was good so far.

The ending was very macabre

Theblacksheepandme · 28/08/2023 01:45

I find it difficult to think any Irish person would find this entertaining. I was actually happy to think BBC was doing a drama about the horrors of The Magdalene Laundries. People need to know of the torment these women went through and are still living but this drama feels disrespectful. I certainly won't be watching anymore of it. Watch The Magdalene Sisters for a true portrayal or Philomena.

purpleme12 · 28/08/2023 01:52

I have watched Philomena. It was good. Years ago I saw that now

jenbj · 28/08/2023 07:32

I didn't like it at all. Too serious a subject to be treated in such a way.

RabbitsRock · 28/08/2023 07:44

There was a film about the laundries where some of the girls managed to escape - it made for harrowing viewing but apparently was nowhere near as bad as the reality 😢

I'm enjoying this. I was impressed by the fact that although it had clearly comic elements, the comedy did not detract from the seriousness of the grief and fury of the situation.
I think Ruth Wilson is very very good. So traumatised, damaged and confused. So intense.
I like the fact that, as with Wolf, it isn't really clear what genre the drama falls into. It makes everything more unpredictable, disorientating, unsettling.

I didn't watch it but the Irish Times review is scathing.

From Wilson's cliched Irish accent (all 'me' & dropped gs) to the anachronisms (eg Wilson would have been in a laundry in the early 90s - they technically existed but not in that form. They were largely inhabited by the older women from the laundries who had nowhere else to go).

This shocking topic should have been dealt with by Irish TV, not well meaning but unaware others.

(I'm well-aware of the history & background, having been part of a cast of a play on the topic back in the 90s, when the topic was barely mentioned).

To illustrate just how recent this all is, here's Sinéad O'Connors accountn of being put in one because she was a "problem" child.

Magdalene Laundry Sinead O'Connor

For clarity, she wasn't quite 'put in a laundry'.

By this point, it was no longer a laundry but a residential home (with a whole set of other troubling aspects, it should be noted).

Living there were some older women ('Maggies') who had nowhere else to go & were inmates when it was a laundry and Sinéad O'Connor relates being sent to sleep with them & witness their distress.

She's clear about this in her book. She wasn't sent there in the way women were to laundries, tho clearly it was far from ideal.

This may be of interest to people wanting to learn more. Catherine Corless is a hero in my eyes.

Catherine Corless is a hero of mine too.

Has work started yet on the excavation of the site at Tuam ?

hopeishere · 28/08/2023 08:34

I did not like this at all. It's quirkiness is totally detracting from the story. When she lit the cigarette from the blow torch my eyes rolled out of my head. The 'comedy' garda as well. DH liked it.

It’ll likely be at least sometime next year before excavation works can begin.
That’s according to the Director who will oversee the works, Daniel MacSweeney. He’s been meeting with families, survivors and campaigners since his appointment.

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/08/2023 09:01

I wouldn't call it entertaining but more interesting and educational

I had no idea that this happened 🥲

Yes this is based on the situation - didn't actually happen to make a drama out of it

Out of interest, what have you learnt about The Magdalene Laundries from watching this?

the80sweregreat · 28/08/2023 09:15

I watched the film ' the Magdalena laundries ' many years ago and that was heartbreaking
I was always vaguely aware of this going on ( by reading books etc mostly ) but I wasn't aware that the last one only shut down in 1996 ( the film is set in the 1960s)

jenbj · 28/08/2023 09:15

I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't like Ruth Wilson's accent. Her voice sounded very false.

Fernie6491 · 28/08/2023 09:20

I found it utterly unbelievable. Father Ted -type humour from the dense gardai. And as for the hole she knocked in the wall to conceal the body - she went so far through, the corpse would have been sitting in next-door's living room/front parlour !
It treated a very serious subject very badly, I felt.

medianewbie · 28/08/2023 09:21

Can I be added to the TV watching list please ?
