Ruth Wilson and Daryl McCormack are teaming up for a gripping new BBC drama, which is inspired by the horrifying revelations around Ireland's Magdalene Laundries.

The Woman In The Wall follows the horrors experienced by Lorna Brady (Ruth Wilson) is a woman from the small, fictional Irish town of Kilkinure, who wakes one morning to find a corpse in her house.

Lorna is chilled to the core as she has no idea who the dead woman is or if she could even be responsible for the apparent murder herself. This is a deadly possibility because Lorna suffers from extreme bouts of sleepwalking, which started around the time she was ripped from her life at the age of 15 and incarcerated in the Kilkinure Convent.

The Woman in the Wall follows Lorna Brady (Wilson), a woman who was incarcerated in a convent from a young age, where she traumatically gave birth – only to have the baby taken away from her to whereabouts unknown.

The awful treatment she endured continues to impact her life, causing extreme bouts of sleepwalking that end with her waking up in strange places with no memory of how she got there.

While her specific story is a work of fiction, the Magdalene Laundries were very real and are thought to have blighted the lives of tens of thousands of women.

Although their history dates back further, more is known about the practices of these institutions in the 20th century, where inmates entered via the criminal justice system, reformatory schools and the Health and Social Services sector.

Once inside, they would have to carry out unpaid labour, while many former inmates have reported being abused.

Magdalene Laundries became the subject of a media scandal in the 1990s, when a mass grave holding 155 bodies was discovered on the former grounds of one such institution in Drumcondra, Dublin.

Did you all catch the conversation between the two old women while they were talking to the detective Women were put in those places for being too pretty.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 27/08/2023 21:55

It just seems a bit PC to me. Tick all the boxes there and then go after compensation (from the meeting). A nice little BBC prime time drama on this subject. yawn

I have no idea what the Catholic church’s stance is on this these days but my best friend works in comms for a Catholic diocese and she’s fed up with the fecking lot of them. Various reasons.

Yep that was common I heard that too. If you were in a Magdalene laundry or other institution how do you ever recover your life? Not sure I could.

PuppyMonkey · 27/08/2023 21:59

I think there’s a good story in here somewhere but this isn’t engaging me at all, it’s daft.

Jellykat · 27/08/2023 22:00

Ok, i presume the dead woman is a nun / nurse?

daffodilandtulip · 27/08/2023 22:03

I think it's meant to be the nun that walked out with her baby.

I'm not sure they should be messing about with such an important subject like this tbh.

Yes 🥲

Even young girls who were considered too promiscuous and flirtatious, or too beautiful, were sent to an asylum by their families.

I thought it was superb. Dark and unpredictable. Absolutely brilliant acting.

Hepzibar · 27/08/2023 22:07

@daffodilandtulip agree.

Not liking this at all - it's not the topic, it's how they are doing it. Dreadful.

The most coherent parts are the police.

Shame because I really wanted to watch this.

PuppyMonkey · 27/08/2023 22:08

Agree @daffodilandtulip - it’s silly and it needs to not be.

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/08/2023 22:09

Did parents send their pregnant unmarried daughters there thinking they would actually be looked after and cared for

OP posts:
daffodilandtulip · 27/08/2023 22:14

No the parents were ashamed and would be outcast by society for having a pregnant daughter.

That, plus hiding the shame from the neighbours and the general community. Getting rid of the problem in the least messy way really. Many girls were packed off to have the baby with some made up story that they'd gone away to work, then when the awful business of having a baby out of wedlock was over they may or may not be welcomed home. Mostly not welcomed so left to rot in these hell holes.

It's far too fresh in our minds here in Ireland, I'm really surprised it's being talked about as if it's a new Scandi murder show or whatever. It was and still is for many women, living with the aftermath, actual hell on earth.

I agree. The whole programme culminating with the scene at the end, set to the song....superb indeed

LittleMonks11 · 27/08/2023 22:27

I thought it was very well done. Ruth Wilson is always brilliant. I went to a Roman Catholic boarding school age 10-16. Nothing like this but suffice to say I excommunicated myself as fast as I was able to. Horrific.

What happened at the laundry's was absolutely awful and I'm
Sure many woman have suffered for years after 🥲🥲🥲🥲

Oh my goodness, that was a hard watch. She thinks she killed the woman she walled up, but I'm sure we'll find out she didn't.

Young Lorna looks nothing like RW though.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 27/08/2023 22:33

I think my stepdad told me there was the very odd and lucky case (he’s from west coast Ireland), he knew of one young girl who was a 3rd or 4th cousin who was large, fat. She got pregnant at 15 and managed to conceal the pregnancy, she was off school for a while - operation on appendix and recovery was official story. Her mother who was also large gave birth to a baby at the same time and it was brought up by the family as the girl’s sister. Stepdad’s mother and mother of the girl who had the baby are same age (both dead now) but they were very close, daughters went to same convent etc. the baby born was told when she was old enough who her real mum was (eg her sister was her mum) but was sworn to secrecy. She’s moved to England a long time ago and lives here and is fine. I think they were very lucky due to her size she concealed the pregnancy and he did say the priest asked a few questions at the time (stepdad wasn’t born then I don’t think it was a kid) but family even the father kept it a secret which was good of him. But like I said, exception to the rule.

I went to a private catholic convent as a teenager for a few years. Thank god I’m Protestant but I had nightmares for ages with the wax effigies in coffins (glass( in the chapel with relics there.

A girl in our fifth form and my class was Protestant but Irish surname. She had a singing Tutor ad she was a talented singer and was quite saintly in character. Anyway half way through fifth year she got pregnant left school and had the baby, no one ever heard from her again. Hope she is ok now.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 27/08/2023 22:45

I thought it was good although couldn't believe that Lorna wouldn't have rung 999 when she found the dead body, very weird to assume she'd killed her but maybe she's very sleep deprived.

I couldn't watch that beautiful wedding dress getting cut up 🙈😂

The young Lorna didn't look anything like RW or 15yo.

Is this based on a book?

Clawdy · 27/08/2023 22:46

It's certainly gripping, and well-acted. I agree the young Lorna looks nothing like Ruth.

EdieLedwell · 27/08/2023 22:50

I love Ruth Wilson. I think the dead
Priest was Luther's boss (Dermot Crowley).

Nice reunion for them.

LittleMonks11 · 27/08/2023 22:51

Ruth Wilson has a very striking, singular face. They'd be hard pressed to find a young version of her.

Jellykat · 27/08/2023 22:51

The film 'Philomena' covered the history of this too and very well i thought..
