Ruth Wilson and Daryl McCormack are teaming up for a gripping new BBC drama, which is inspired by the horrifying revelations around Ireland's Magdalene Laundries.

The Woman In The Wall follows the horrors experienced by Lorna Brady (Ruth Wilson) is a woman from the small, fictional Irish town of Kilkinure, who wakes one morning to find a corpse in her house.

Lorna is chilled to the core as she has no idea who the dead woman is or if she could even be responsible for the apparent murder herself. This is a deadly possibility because Lorna suffers from extreme bouts of sleepwalking, which started around the time she was ripped from her life at the age of 15 and incarcerated in the Kilkinure Convent.

The Woman in the Wall follows Lorna Brady (Wilson), a woman who was incarcerated in a convent from a young age, where she traumatically gave birth – only to have the baby taken away from her to whereabouts unknown.

The awful treatment she endured continues to impact her life, causing extreme bouts of sleepwalking that end with her waking up in strange places with no memory of how she got there.

While her specific story is a work of fiction, the Magdalene Laundries were very real and are thought to have blighted the lives of tens of thousands of women.

Although their history dates back further, more is known about the practices of these institutions in the 20th century, where inmates entered via the criminal justice system, reformatory schools and the Health and Social Services sector.

Once inside, they would have to carry out unpaid labour, while many former inmates have reported being abused.

Magdalene Laundries became the subject of a media scandal in the 1990s, when a mass grave holding 155 bodies was discovered on the former grounds of one such institution in Drumcondra, Dublin.

There was a laundry near me growing up.
I had no idea that it was once a Magdalene laundry.
As a child I remember my grandmother would get her "good" tablecloth washed and starched there after Christmas.
I'd go in with her to collect it sometimes.
I remember the smell in the laundry - it was very strong, hard to describe but antiseptic, possibly the chemicals- detergent and starch that they used. It would get into your nostrils and you'd smell it for days.

There were women working there and now looking back with an adult's eye, I think they were probably institutionalised and had special needs. 🥲

Blondeshavemorefun · 31/08/2023 19:16

How many Magdalene laundry's were there

I've just googled and it says that after 1922 when the British withdrew from ruling all of Ireland and Ireland became self governing ( apart from the 6 counties in Ulster which were still ruled by the British government - a treaty to this effect had been signed ) there were Magdalen laundries in 10 locations run by 4 different orders of Roman Catholic nuns.

Interesting to read that the first "Magdalen Asylum in Ireland for Penitent Women' in 1765 was Protestant ( Church of Ireland ).
But the Catholic Magdalen asylums survived the longest.
🥲

The full episodes aren't on my bbc iplayer so I can't binge!

ImTheBakerLiteGirl · 31/08/2023 23:35

Thank you for that link @Theblacksheepandme fascinating and heart-breaking. To think Mary's mother died just a year before Mary met the rest of the family. So so sad 😢

Oblomov23 · 01/09/2023 04:13

Started watching. Seems ok, not sure.

tiredandolderthanithought · 01/09/2023 08:12

Not read the full thread as I'm behind and only just started watching.

Young Ruth Wilson really doesn't look young! Have been Googling her and think she is 21 but in this she looks much closer to Ruth's age!

I'm a little confused at the moment (half way through episode 1) but hope my brain catches up 🤦🏼‍♀️

purpleme12 · 01/09/2023 08:50

Oh I think she looks young

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/09/2023 09:29

I haven't caught up with the second episode yet, but just popping on to say I think the detective's comment to his mum about Columbo not being a whodunnit was a significant one. I think this story is the same - it's a howdunnit.

EdieLedwell · 03/09/2023 21:06

Poor Clemence,

Sealed her fate by saying "I'll tell you everything tomorrow.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 03/09/2023 21:06

Marking place

SydneyCarton · 03/09/2023 21:16

I call Amy for the next dead body 🤣

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 03/09/2023 21:27

I must’ve missed the second episode!

Christ it’s hard hitting.

Blondeshavemorefun · 31/08/2023 19:16

How many Magdalene laundry's were there

Too many. They were all over the world so not just limited to Republic of Ireland. Probably most catholic countries had at least one.

AnyFucker · 03/09/2023 21:33

What the hell did Lorna put in her eyes, and why ?

the80sweregreat · 03/09/2023 21:34

Lorna put chili sauce in her eyes in order to stay awake I think.

2Rebecca · 03/09/2023 21:47

Why is Clemence not having a post mortem? Isn't it a sudden death of a young woman. Have I missed her having a terminal to llness?

SydneyCarton · 03/09/2023 21:58
Shock

I assumed it was suicide, "heart attack" was obviously what the family said it was

EdieLedwell · 03/09/2023 22:05

I knew she wouldn't be in the wall!

the80sweregreat · 03/09/2023 22:07

She is obviously mentally unwell ( understandably)
I also had a feeling the wall was empty too

greengreengrass25 · 03/09/2023 22:07

I'm more curious about the massive space in the wall and how there was no wallpaper on the bit she axed.

It looked very well repaired and plastered if she had smashed it up previously

tammie49 · 03/09/2023 22:07

There's no body in the wall is there?

LittleMonks11 · 03/09/2023 22:09

Best episode yet. I knew there'd be nothing in the wall. Who is the creepy pretend daughter?
