Tonight's Who Do You Think You Are?' helps Lesley Manville trace her family history. Looks interesting although I have to confess I'd watch her in anything!
BBC1 9pm

Love her. Have set to record, thank you!

Savemesos · 27/07/2023 22:16

Sharing the Lesley love too! Such a stylish warm woman.

I found that very interesting but would’ve liked to know what happened to the children of Aaron Harding after he left England - how did that affect the life of her 2 x Great grandad.

Me too @Savemesos .
She never asked about those 9 kids that were left behind when he was sent to prison then shipped off to Australia - or, if she did, I missed it.
I wanted to know who was looking after them while he was out rebelling and demonstrating - I think they'd already lost their mother at that point.
I suspect Aaron's life was more pleasant than that of those poor kids, but appreciate it wouldn't be easy for any of them.
They couldn't even send the kids to the poor house - given that it had been pulled down in the rebellion!

Oh, I know the historian who dealt with her. That was very interesting seeing her on screen!

EmmaPaella · 28/07/2023 00:28

Following to remind me to watch it!

Helendegenerate · 28/07/2023 00:36

I watched most of the programme and I get so envious of those who can trace their families back a long way. It must be so costly to hire the right people to delve into the depths and produce such fascinating documents and records.

Leslie Manville is a favourite of mine too and I watched her with Liam Neeson the other night in Ordinary Love. Wow it was compelling viewing.

Willmafrockfit · 29/07/2023 10:02

i loved her in Another Year
so brilliant.

Willmafrockfit · 29/07/2023 10:03

i have just seen it is on Disney plus so i might have a rewatch!

newfloorplease · 29/07/2023 19:40

Oh my word ! @Wingedharpy I really wanted to know what happened to those 9 motherless children of Aaron Harding.
I too couldn't believe she never asked about them, what happened to them while he was off rebelling and demonstrating. So sad.
Then he gets shipped off to Australia and eventually meets someone much younger and has children with her.
Obviously at least one of those children that were left behind survived into adulthood or Lesley wouldn't be alive.
Most odd they didn't delve a little deeper into that mystery.

I'd never heard of the Swing Riots until a few years ago.until
During covid I did my dna , and researched newly found ancestors. I came across the grandfather who along side his brother was involved in the Swing riots. They were sentenced to 14 years and deported to Tasmania . He was a married father of 9 .
I also discovered distant Australian cousins matched via his dna !
he never came back to the uk and died over there.

Fifiesta · 29/07/2023 19:51

To be fair to Lesley Manville, she may well have asked what happened to the nine children left.
it may not have made the edit.
I suspect a lot of material is not deemed interesting enough to make it into the final screened content.

Willmafrockfit · 29/07/2023 19:52

that;s fascinating @RuthTopp

That's remarkably similar to Lesley's ancestor.

I really enjoyed this episode, I love Lesley Manville and I love doing DNA genealogy. Great to see some DNA-type mysteries on this programme.

CheshireCat1 · 29/07/2023 20:21

She was on at the Proms the other night, great watch.

BitOutOfPractice · 29/07/2023 20:22

I love her too. Though her desert island disks appearance recently made me a bit less keen somehow.

Netaporter · 29/07/2023 21:39

I’m always fascinated by the fact she was married to Gary Oldman. I do think her time is now and she’s had some great roles of late.

RuthTopp · 29/07/2023 22:13

@Willmafrockfit @newfloorplease

I also found out when released he was working for a man as an overseer ( of what I do not know ) but he was murdered whilst in his employ . His brother got himself back to the uk and to his family .
it was fascinating to find out that the government in Australia kept very detailed records of the convicts so I found out about the ship he was on and the brothers general conduct .
The uncle had a daughter also transported out there , aged just 18 ( not connected to the riots ) for a sad reason and she was sentenced to 7 years . Met a fellow convict out there , married but on her records it says unlawfully killed so I assume killed by her husband aged around 28/30.
These ancestors were from a very small rural village so hardly major criminals and I saw a print of a letter from the village vicar pleading on behalf of the young woman for clemency .

So pleased to discover I have loads of company in the Manville fan club!

She made a big thing of the unmarried man of one couple leaving everything to his "friend" who was the other half of the couple. When I made a will anyone who did not have a legal relationship such as nephew, husband or son had to be referred to as friend. It didn't have the emotional significance she seemed to attribute to the word.

I seem to be in the minority but I found her irritating.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 30/07/2023 20:57

I haven’t watched this but I have been watching Magpie Murders and thinking how much I love Lesley Manville - she’s just so beautiful and watchable!

TennisWithDeborah · 30/07/2023 21:47

She can’t put a foot wrong. She was the best thing about World on Fire. Am watching Magpie Murders now.

We said the same when watching, she overly romanticised that !

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/07/2023 23:55

I used to live near her and she used to get the same bus, she laughed at my ds who was roaring his head off in his buggy one day and smiled at him . She's the size of a Christmas tree fairy, really tiny.

Ooh, was it the discs she chose? I missed it.
