If I like Nordic stuff what else should I watch?

I love Nordic tv programmes and films, I love the quirky vibe and listening to the language. I loved The Bridge, although I'm not normally a fan of crime stuff. I enjoyed Home for Christmas, a series I came across on Netflix, and a film I found called Likkevell (I think that's how you spell it)

Any other recommendations?

I'd be happy to try other foreign language stuff too, French or Spanish, but I really prefer the Nordic stuff (with subtitles obvs!)

Thanks 😊

It’s not nordic but have you watched Annika on iPlayer? Discovered it recently and it’s fab.

Funkynessa · 08/07/2023 17:53

Spiral (French); any old Wallander stuff; The Killing; Trapped (Iceland);
That's all I can think of right now :)

bilbodog · 08/07/2023 17:54

Have you looked on walter presents on channel 4 - they have a lot of foreign crime thrillers which are very good.

weve just watched vortex on netflix which is french and very good.

WillyLows · 08/07/2023 17:56

Would also recommend Annika. It's very good.

Der Pass on Sky Atlantic (German/Austrian)
The Chestnut Man on Netflix (Danish)
Valhalla Murders on Netflix (Iceland)
Fortitude on Sky Atlantic - actually English but set in the Arctic circle
Witnesses think is on BBC Iplayer (French)

midsomermurderess · 08/07/2023 18:21

On Walter Presents, Arctic Circle, Arctic Murder, Mountain Rescue and Sisterhood, Swedish, Finnish and Icelandic. All quite engaging and you get to see a fair bit of the countries and culture.

midsomermurderess · 08/07/2023 18:24

Agatha Christie’s Hjerson is good too, a bit off beat, quirky crime drama, set in Sweden and Finland.

Dahliasrule · 08/07/2023 18:29

We liked Sandhaam Murders in Prime. Less Nordic Noir more Swedish sunlight but very enjoyable.

Scautish · 08/07/2023 18:37

Borgen - danish politics (really excellent)
trapped (Icelandic murder) - but you’ll want to wear a warm jumper when watching it
arne Dahl (Swedish crime)
norsemen - Norwegian comedy (currently watching and I love it but it may not be everyone’s taste)

The Bureau - french spy drama - highly
recommend
Gomorrah - Italian mafia drama.

btw I found Money Heist (Spanish) absolutely dreadful but it seems very popular.

If you want quirky watch a Swedish film called Border. It's most perculiar.

Quirky doesn't even scratch the sides.

Don't read too much about it though because you'll spoil the plot for yourself.

It's very very very weird.

It won an Un Certain Regard award at Cannes in 2018

SirQuintusAureliusMaximus · 08/07/2023 18:49

Also the Roy Anderssen triology is good fun - Swedish - also very quirky. Maybe it's something about Sweden?

I watched A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence and was very taken with it so watched the other two. They can all be watched independently - it's not like a serial.

Definitely watch "Trapped" (Icelandic) - especially season 1 where they are trapped in the village, in a blizzard ... with a murderer

Sandhamn Murders (Swedish)

The original Swedish "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" trilogy - but very dark and perhaps a trigger warning

gingergiraffe · 08/07/2023 19:15

Currently watching The Promise on Netflix, French. The disappearance of young girls, 20 years apart. Not gory but good. A six parter.

Zizou8 · 08/07/2023 19:26

Karppi (Deadwind) and Bordertown are detective / murder mystery programmes on Netflix. Both good, imo better in Finnish with English subtitles not dubbed into English.

Firsttimecaller · 08/07/2023 19:29

Post Mortem: no one dies in Skarnes is Nordic black humour on netflix. Very good!

lurchermummy · 08/07/2023 22:22

Thanks all some great suggestions, I do like Wallander but not the Kenneth Branagh one. I tend to forget about Walter Presenrs but that's a good shout, I'll che k it out, thanks.

Hinterland, I'd suggest watching it in Welsh with subtitles, as the use of English in the Welsh version adds extra dimension to the characters

gingergiraffe · 08/07/2023 22:37

Apologies. The promise is on BBC i player. Just one episode left out of six and I am still trying to work out the end. Really good.

SouthernFreeze · 08/07/2023 22:41

The Bridge - it's a great Nordic series and theUS version is also very good.

midsomermurderess · 08/07/2023 22:45

I'd also recommend The Tunnel. It's the Anglo-French take on the Bridge. I don't where/if it's still showing

Newuser15 · 08/07/2023 22:53

If you would like something a bit lighter I'd recommend Love & Anarchy and Bonus Family. Absolutely loved both of them, watched Love & Anarchy twice! They are both Swedish.
For stuff a bit darker I'd suggest Grey Zone (Swedish/Danish), Deadwind (Finnish) and Trom (Faroese). All brilliant.

HannahDefoesTrenchcoat · 08/07/2023 23:00

Twin on iplayer. Norwegian and very good. A lot is said in few words

ninetieseyebrows · 08/07/2023 23:07

Rita (Danish)
Young Royals (Swedish)

skilpadde · 08/07/2023 23:20

State of Happiness (Lykkeland) is a Norwegian TV series that is available on iplayer. I loved it.

Wisting (Norwegian) and Darkness: those who kill (Danish) are also excellent, but are crime series that may not be your cup of tea. Both are on iplayer.

Greyzone, mentioned above, is superb but I don't think it's currently available anywhere. It has Birgitte Hjort Sørensen in it, who is brilliant in Borgen (and Game of Thrones, and Pitch Perfect 2).
